I tested seven leading AI assistants against the jobs people actually expect from a personal assistant: answering current questions, reading connected information, completing actions, running recurring tasks, and controlling devices. The results were not as simple as choosing the chatbot with the best writing.
ChatGPT was the strongest all-rounder for research and multi-step work. Gemini was the most useful Android and Google-account assistant. Alexa+ made the most sense for a connected household, while Siri remained the least ambitious but most native option on Apple hardware. Claude, Copilot, and Perplexity each had narrower strengths—and important limits that marketing pages can obscure.
This comparison reflects the products and features available as of August 9, 2026. Features, quotas, supported countries, and subscription requirements can change.
My test criteria
I scored each assistant on five practical tasks rather than treating a fluent conversation as proof of usefulness:
#1 Best Overall
- Echo Hub — An easy-to-use smart home control panel redesigned for your home. Arrange controls on your dashboard to quickly adjust devices, view cameras, start routines, and more.
- Customize your dashboard — Arrange devices into sections and resize them to focus on what matters most. Create a personalized layout that matches how your family uses their connected devices.
- Reimagined for your home - With an Alexa+ and compatible Ring subscription (sold separately), get Ring camera event summaries to stay in the know. Search your Ring footage using simple voice commands. Create routines by voice, activate modes to manage multiple devices at once, and chat with Alexa to easily control your smart home.
- Home security for the whole family — Use Echo Hub to easily arm and disarm your compatible security system, making it easy for everyone in your family to manage home security. Use the Alexa app and compatible cameras, locks, alarms, and sensors to check in while you're out.
- Works with thousands of Alexa compatible devices — WiFi, Bluetooth, Zigbee, Matter, Sidewalk, and Thread devices sync seamlessly with the built-in smart home hub.
- Current information: Could it answer a source-sensitive question and show credible evidence?
- Personal context: Could it work with email, calendars, documents, or other connected data?
- Actions: Could it set something up or complete a low-risk task, rather than merely explain how?
- Recurring work: Could it run a briefing, monitor a topic, or remind me reliably?
- Device control: Could it control the phone, computer, smart-home equipment, or media system it claimed to support?
I also tested failure cases: ambiguous dates, time-zone changes, revoked permissions, images embedded in email, and requests for immediate alerts. Those checks separated genuine assistants from chatbots with a few integrations.
Quick results
| Assistant | Best for | Biggest limitation |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Research, briefings, connected apps, multi-step browser work | Scheduled Tasks are not general autonomous browser automation |
| Gemini | Google services and Android controls | Some scheduled monitoring is approximate, not real-time |
| Claude | Long documents, planning, and work-tool connections | Gmail and Calendar integrations are read-only |
| Microsoft Copilot | Windows, Edge, Microsoft 365, and visual guidance | Copilot Vision does not operate the computer for you |
| Perplexity Assistant | Voice actions on Android | Android-only; not an iPhone Siri replacement |
| Siri with Apple Intelligence | Native iPhone, iPad, and Mac actions | The more personal cross-app Siri features remain in development |
| Alexa+ | Smart homes and household planning | Actions depend on device, account, add-on, and location |
1. ChatGPT: best overall AI personal assistant
ChatGPT won the broadest part of my test. It combines voice, web research, scheduled tasks, connected apps, and Work/cloud-browser workflows in one cross-platform assistant. It was particularly good when a request needed several stages: gather information, compare sources, summarize the result, and turn it into a plan.
Where ChatGPT stood out
- Deep research: Choose Deep research from the + tools menu or sidebar, or type
/Deepresearch. Before it starts, review the proposed plan and use Sites → Manage sites to prioritize or restrict sources. - Connected apps: Go to Settings → Apps, select a service, choose Connect, and complete its OAuth login. You can then invoke it with an @ mention or through + → More.
- Recurring work: Manage scheduled items at Settings → Notifications → Manage tasks, or open the Scheduled page in the sidebar. Tasks can be one-time, recurring, or monitoring tasks.
- Voice: On mobile, tap the Voice icon in the bottom-right corner. The alternate interface is controlled at Settings → Voice → Separate Mode.
The main catch is terminology. OpenAI’s former agent mode is no longer available; its current guidance points users toward ChatGPT Work for longer, multi-step tasks. Scheduled Tasks are useful for reminders, briefings, and monitoring, but they are not a replacement for unrestricted browser automation.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
There are also hard limits: a task cannot run more than once per hour, and active-task limits are currently 3 for Go, 5 for Plus, and 15 for Pro, Business, and Enterprise. Tasks do not support Voice chats or GPTs. A task created inside a Project cannot access that Project’s files, and deleting its associated chat pauses it automatically.
Verdict: The best choice if you want one assistant for research, writing, connected information, and recurring personal workflows. It is not the best device assistant.
2. Gemini: best for Google users and Android
Gemini was the most convincing choice for someone already invested in Gmail, Calendar, Drive, and Android. Its advantage is not just model quality; it can occupy the assistant role on an Android phone and reach device utilities that ordinary web chatbots cannot.
Scheduling in Gemini
For ordinary scheduled actions, use gemini.google.com, write a prompt containing the time or recurrence, and click Submit. Manage them through Settings & help → Scheduled actions, where you can edit, pause, resume, or delete an action.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →On a personal Google Account, Scheduled actions require Google AI Pro or Google AI Ultra, with Keep Activity enabled. The ordinary limit is 10 active actions.
Gemini Spark is a separate system. Open gemini.google.com → Switch to Spark. For a manual schedule, select Schedules → Create manually, enter the name, timing, and instructions, then click Create. Spark supports time schedules, Gmail monitors, and topic monitors, with up to 15 concurrently running tasks.
Spark schedules are not precise alarms. Google says timing can be delayed during heavy traffic, and a schedule is locked to the time zone where it was created. That matters if you travel or move. Topic monitors are also unsuitable for events such as alerting you the instant tickets go on sale.
Android control
Gemini’s Utilities app can manage alarms, timers, stopwatches, apps, notifications, and media. It is unavailable in Gemini on iOS, the web app, and Live chats. Additional controls—Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Airplane mode, Do Not Disturb, flashlight, screenshots, volume, and powering off—require the Google app to be the default device assistant and may require notification access.
Verdict: The best AI personal assistant for Android and Google services. Choose something else if you need exact real-time monitoring or broad device support outside Android.
3. Claude: best for thoughtful planning and documents
Claude was less useful as a phone or household controller, but excellent for long-form planning, document analysis, and work-tool connections. Its Projects, Artifacts, web search, mobile voice, Google integrations, remote connectors, and desktop extensions make it a strong work-oriented assistant.
On mobile, tap the sound-wave voice icon beside the microphone. Voice mode is currently English-focused. In the mobile app’s Settings, integration toggles can connect Google services; paid users can access Gmail and Google Calendar, while Google Docs access is listed for Enterprise.
Claude’s Google Drive workflow is straightforward: in a chat choose + → Add from Google Drive. Inside a Project, use Add Content → Google Drive. Google Docs text extraction supports files up to 10 MB, but embedded images in synced Docs are not interpreted.
Recommended Free Tools
Desktop users can open Settings → Extensions. Depending on the extension and permissions, local extensions can access files, applications, calendars, email, and messaging apps. Remote connectors are managed through Settings → Connectors; paid plans are required for remote web connectors, while local desktop extensions are available to all Claude Desktop users.
The important limitation is that Claude’s Gmail and Google Calendar integrations are read-oriented. Claude can search and understand messages and calendar data, but it does not create or modify emails or calendar events through those integrations. It also cannot see images embedded in emails. Voice transcripts and summaries are saved in chat history, so do not treat a voice conversation as an automatically private scratchpad.
Verdict: The best assistant here for turning a large amount of information into a coherent plan or deliverable. It is not the strongest choice for taking calendar or email actions.
4. Microsoft Copilot: best for Windows guidance
Copilot combines web answers, voice, Vision, Actions, and Microsoft 365 integration. Its strongest personal-assistant use was contextual help while working in Windows, Edge, or Microsoft applications.
For Windows Vision, open the Copilot app, click the glasses icon, select the screen or app to share, and choose Start with text or Start with voice. You can select up to two apps. In Edge, sign in with a personal Microsoft account, click the Copilot toolbar icon, then click the voice-waves button. On mobile, tap the glasses icon and grant camera permission.
Vision can explain what is on screen, identify controls, and guide you through a process. It does not click, type, scroll, or operate the PC, page, or phone on your behalf. You still perform the action. It also requires a personal Microsoft account and is unavailable to commercial users signed in with an Entra ID account.
For Microsoft 365 subscribers, listed limits include 10 minutes of Vision per day for Personal and Family, 15 minutes for Premium, 30 minutes of voice for Personal and Family, and 60 minutes for Premium. Microsoft notes that limits can vary by entry point and system conditions.

- Easy set up and use: 2.4GHz Wi-Fi connection required. Plug in, open the Kasa app, follow the simple instructions and enjoy
- Trusted and reliable: Designed and developed in Silicon Valley, Kasa is trusted by over 5 Million users and being the reader’s choice for PCMag 2020. UL certified for safety use.
Verdict: A useful coach for Windows and Microsoft 365, but not an autonomous computer operator. Do not score it as one.

5. Alexa+: best for a connected household
Alexa+ is the most household-oriented assistant in this group. It works through a browser, the Alexa app, Echo devices, and Fire TV, carrying conversations and context across those surfaces. Amazon says it is free with Prime.
Its intended jobs include planning events, making checklists, drafting invitations, controlling compatible smart-home products, making reservations, and ordering delivery. That makes it more useful than a general chatbot when the task involves household devices or services.
However, “Alexa+ can book or order anything” is not a safe assumption. Reservations, home services, food ordering, travel, and movie tickets are handled through add-ons. Each add-on can impose its own geography, language, permissions, and privacy terms. The exact device, service account, and confirmation requirements matter.
Verdict: The best fit for Echo owners and families that want voice-controlled household routines. It is less compelling as a standalone research assistant.
6. Perplexity Assistant: useful Android action layer
Perplexity Assistant combines Perplexity’s web-grounded answers with an Android assistant layer that can invoke apps and perform voice-activated actions. It is a practical option if cited web research matters and you want to trigger phone tasks without opening a separate chatbot.
Update the Perplexity Android app and follow its onboarding banner. To make it the default assistant, go to Settings → Apps → Default apps → Digital assistant app → Perplexity. Depending on the phone, activation may involve swiping from the bottom-left corner, holding the power button, or holding Home.
There is no equivalent general iPhone replacement: Perplexity documents this assistant as an Android feature. Button-remapping instructions also vary between Samsung, Xiaomi, Huawei, and other devices.
Verdict: A worthwhile Android experiment, particularly for web-grounded voice requests. It is too platform-limited to win the overall category.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →7. Siri with Apple Intelligence: best native Apple option
Siri remains the obvious choice when the priority is working with Apple hardware, Shortcuts, and privacy-sensitive device tasks. Apple Intelligence improves language handling, typed requests, product knowledge, visual intelligence, Shortcuts intelligence, and ChatGPT integration. Siri can also maintain context between consecutive requests.
Enable it through Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri. Supported hardware includes iPhone 15 Pro models, iPhone 16 models or later, iPad mini with A17 Pro, iPads and Macs with M1 or later, and Apple Vision Pro. Apple lists approximately 7 GB of device storage for Apple Intelligence. Keep the device connected to Wi-Fi and power while its on-device models download.
To type to Siri, double-tap the bottom of the screen and enter the request. Availability depends on device, language, and region; changing the Siri language can temporarily disable Apple Intelligence while the matching language downloads.
The major expectation problem is that Apple’s more personal Siri features are still in development. Do not assume Siri already has the fully personal, broad cross-app understanding previously demonstrated in previews. It is improved Siri, not yet the universal personal agent many announcements suggested.

What the tests reveal
A chatbot is not automatically a device assistant
ChatGPT, Claude, and Copilot may be excellent conversational tools without being able to change a phone setting, control a light, or complete a booking. Gemini on Android, Perplexity Assistant, Siri, and Alexa+ have a different advantage: they occupy a device or household control layer.
“Scheduled” does not always mean “real-time”
ChatGPT Tasks, Gemini Scheduled actions, and Gemini Spark can run recurring work, but they have different timing and inactivity rules. Gemini Spark schedules may be delayed, and ChatGPT Tasks cannot run more often than once per hour. Use a proper alerting or automation system for time-critical events.
Connected does not mean write access
Claude can understand Gmail and Calendar data without being able to edit either. A connected Drive account may extract document text without interpreting embedded images. Always test whether an integration can read, draft, change, or execute.
How to choose
| Your priority | Best starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Research and recurring briefings | ChatGPT | Deep research, apps, voice, and scheduled tasks |
| Android controls and Google data | Gemini | Utilities plus Gmail, Calendar, and Drive context |
| Long documents and planning | Claude | Projects, Artifacts, connectors, and strong writing workflow |
| Windows assistance | Copilot | Vision can explain screens and applications |
| Echo and smart-home routines | Alexa+ | Cross-device household context and device control |
| Android web research plus actions | Perplexity Assistant | Default-assistant access on Android |
| Apple-native requests | Siri with Apple Intelligence | Built into supported Apple devices and Shortcuts |
A safer apples-to-apples test you can run
- Ask each assistant the same current, source-sensitive question and inspect the evidence.
- Connect only the account needed for a personal-context test. Ask for tomorrow’s schedule, unread email priorities, and a short briefing.
- Try a low-risk action: create a calendar event, set an alarm, draft a message, or make a reversible list.
- Create a recurring briefing and record its exact time zone, notification method, frequency, and deletion controls.
- Test device-specific functions on the relevant platform: Gemini or Perplexity on Android, Siri on iPhone, and Alexa+ on Echo.
- Revoke a permission, use an ambiguous date, insert an image into an email, switch time zones, and request a real-time alert. These are the failure cases that expose the real boundaries.
