A schema diff can tell you that an API field is about to disappear. By itself, it cannot tell you which applications rely on that field. In a DEV Community article published September 29, 2026, engineer Katravath Sreedhar describes using Hindsight memory in a prototype called API Sentinel to carry recorded consumer dependencies into later compatibility checks. The approach can make a change review more informed—but a missing recalled dependency is not proof that a change is safe.
Why a schema diff cannot answer “Who depends on this field?”
A diff compares API shapes: for example, it can show that a proposed change removes description from a Course API. That identifies the changed field, not the applications that read it. Consumer knowledge has to come from somewhere else, such as dependency records collected from teams, code, or runtime observations.
Sreedhar’s example starts with a recorded fact that an E-Learning App depends on the Course API’s description field. When a later change proposes removing that field, the system can recall the earlier record and flag a known consumer. As he puts it, “The API change is stateless, but the compatibility system does not have to be.”
The useful distinction is between detecting a change and assessing its known consequences. Memory can connect a present proposal to dependencies recorded earlier; it cannot identify an unknown consumer merely because a language model is asked to reason about the schema.

How API Sentinel uses memory in a change review
In Sreedhar’s account, API Sentinel separates its conventional application backend from a Python reasoning service. The Spring Boot backend owns endpoints, API-change records, persistence, and the HTTP boundary to the agent; MySQL stores structured application records. A separate Flask service exposes /remember and /analyze, and calls Hindsight for memory operations and Groq for language-model explanations. The author says Java contains no Hindsight-specific logic. These are details of the author’s implementation, not independently verified project behavior.
1. Record the consumer dependency
The system stores a compact fact such as “E-Learning App depends on Course API description.” Sreedhar treats this as an observed dependency record, distinct from any later interpretation of a proposed change.

2. Extract the field affected by a proposal
When someone submits a change, the analysis service identifies the relevant field—in the example, description—and uses it to formulate a request for direct consumer dependencies.
3. Retrieve and filter relevant memories
The service asks Hindsight to recall dependency information before asking the language model to explain the result. The author describes filtering recalled memories to keep the analysis focused on direct dependencies. In the prototype, that filtering is phrase-based; he says a production implementation should use more structured, schema-driven filtering.

Hindsight’s documentation describes retaining content to extract structured memories and recalling memories through a query. Those product capabilities explain the kind of memory operations the design uses; they do not establish that API Sentinel retrieves every relevant dependency or that its results are complete.
4. Generate an explanation from the retrieved evidence
The language model receives the recalled evidence and produces a developer-readable explanation. The article quotes the instruction: “Do not invent consumers or dependencies that are not present in the Hindsight memories.” Sreedhar summarizes the intended boundary as: “The LLM is an explainer, not the source of truth.” In this design, dependency facts should come from records, while generated prose explains what those records imply for the proposed change.

5. Keep facts and analyses separate
The author retains dependency records separately from compatibility analyses. A dependency is treated as an observed fact; an analysis is a derived interpretation of a particular proposed change and its result. Keeping those record types distinct makes it easier to tell what was recorded about a consumer from what a system concluded when reviewing a change.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What “NO_KNOWN_IMPACT” does—and does not—mean
In the article’s example, NO_KNOWN_IMPACT is the result when the system recalls no dependency for the field under review. Read the label literally: no impact is known from the memories retrieved. It does not prove that no application consumes the field, that dependency records are current, or that the change is safe to deploy.

That distinction matters most when dependency coverage is incomplete. A missing record, an outdated record, or a retrieval/filtering miss can all leave a real consumer out of the analysis. Treat the result as an evidence gap to investigate when the consequences of a missed dependency are significant—not as a compatibility guarantee.
How to evaluate a memory-backed compatibility check
The article is a description of a prototype, not a reported benchmark or production validation. It provides no measured API-compatibility results. If you are assessing a similar design, the most useful questions follow from its evidence chain:
- Are dependencies known and current? Ask how consumer records are created, updated, and retired. Retrieval cannot compensate for dependencies that were never recorded.
- Is the evidence structured? Explicit API, field, and consumer identifiers are easier to scope and check than loosely worded notes. Sreedhar identifies phrase-based filtering as a prototype choice and points to schema-driven filtering as a production direction.
- Can reviewers trace a conclusion to its evidence? The design’s separation between dependency facts and generated analyses helps distinguish recorded input from interpretation.
- Does the system communicate uncertainty honestly? A no-match result should indicate that no dependency was recalled, rather than asserting that no consumer exists.
- What is the retrieval scope? Check whether queries are constrained to the relevant API and field, and whether the filtering can exclude unrelated memories without dropping direct dependencies.
Sreedhar also describes richer dependency ingestion and retrieval as future work. Those are proposals, not capabilities established by the article. The practical lesson is to treat memory as a way to reuse recorded evidence across reviews, while continuing to manage the coverage and quality of that evidence.
