In my experience, AI could produce a first draft of code quickly, but debugging that draft sometimes took far longer—up to 10 times as long as writing it. That is a personal ratio, not a benchmark for developers generally. The change that helped was to stop asking for an immediate fix and instead give the assistant evidence, ask it to diagnose the failure, and verify any small patch against the intended behavior.
Why can AI-generated code take longer to debug?
A generated answer can look complete while still missing the precise behavior the project requires. The hard work then shifts from typing to understanding what the code actually does, locating the mismatch, and checking that a change fixes the real problem without breaking something else.
That gap appears in Stack Overflow’s 2025 Developer Survey. Among 31,476 responses to its multiple-select question about frustrations encountered with AI tools—64.2% of survey respondents—45% selected “Debugging AI-generated code is more time-consuming.” The most-selected frustration, at 66%, was dealing with AI solutions that are “almost right, but not quite.” These are self-reported experiences, not measurements of debugging hours or a writing-to-debugging ratio. Stack Overflow’s 2025 AI survey does not establish that AI causes longer debugging for every developer.
One reason is that an assistant may fill in missing context with assumptions or suggest a solution before the root cause has been localized. Microsoft Research’s 2024 paper on conversational debugging describes these limitations in question-and-answer-style debugging. When the prompt lacks the relevant code, inputs, environment, or intended behavior, a confident patch can address the wrong problem.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What changed: investigate before asking for a fix
The practical shift is to treat the assistant as a debugging partner that needs evidence, not as an autocomplete that should guess the repair. Start with an observable failure and make the reasoning inspectable before changing code.
- Describe the failure. Share the exact error, unexpected output, failing test, or a minimal reproduction. State what you expected to happen and what happened instead.
- Supply relevant context. Include the surrounding code, representative inputs, relevant environment details, and what you have already checked. Keep the context focused on the behavior in question.
- Request diagnosis, not a patch. Ask what the code appears to do, which likely causes fit the evidence, and what observation would distinguish those causes. This makes assumptions easier to catch.
- Probe alternatives and edge cases. Try different inputs or ask what happens at boundary cases. Ask why a proposed change would address the observed failure and what other behavior it could affect.
- Make a small change and verify it. Review the diff, then check it against the project’s existing tests, checks, or reproduction. Keep responsibility for deciding whether the change is correct.
This is a disciplined workflow, not a guarantee that an assistant will find the cause. It reduces the chance of accepting a plausible-looking answer without understanding whether it fits the evidence.

What a context-rich debugging exchange looks like
In a GitHub account of his workflow, open-source developer Claudio Wunder describes keeping related code open in VS Code, explaining what it should achieve, asking what Copilot thinks it is doing, and exploring how it behaves with different user inputs. He says: “I try to provide as much context to Copilot about what the code is supposed to achieve and I keep iterating with follow-up questions until I find the problems and solutions,” Wunder told GitHub. That is a practitioner’s account, not a controlled demonstration that the approach works in every project.
The useful principle is to make the assistant explain its interpretation before it proposes a change. If its description of the code or intended behavior is wrong, correct that understanding first. If two causes seem possible, ask what evidence would tell them apart rather than inviting another ungrounded fix.

How to read the studies without turning them into a single verdict
Different findings address different questions. Stack Overflow’s 2025 survey records developers’ reported frustrations. GitHub’s 2023 study tested defined authoring and review tasks. Neither result cancels the other because their participants, tasks, tools, and measures differ.
| Evidence | What it found | What it does—and does not—show |
|---|---|---|
| Stack Overflow Developer Survey, 2025 | 45% selected the time-consuming-debugging frustration; 66% selected near-correct AI answers. The frustration question had 31,476 responses and allowed multiple selections. | Broad self-reported frustrations, not observed time spent or a causal estimate of AI’s effect. |
| Microsoft Research’s ROBIN paper, 2024 | A within-subject study of 16 industry professionals reported 2.5× improvement in bug localization and 3.5× improvement in bug resolution for ROBIN compared with AI-assisted debugging in Visual Studio before ROBIN. | A result for a specific research system and study, not a general productivity multiplier or validation of this article’s personal 10× ratio. |
| GitHub Copilot Chat code-quality study, 2023 | In controlled API authoring, review, and feedback tasks, 85% of 36 developers said they felt more confident in code quality, and reviews were completed 15% faster. | A vendor-published study of defined tasks and developers with five to ten years’ experience; it did not test whether debugging generated code takes longer in ordinary work. |
The studies point to a more useful conclusion than “AI makes coding faster” or “AI makes coding slower”: outcomes depend on the task and on what is being measured. A faster first draft does not by itself settle how much effort it will take to verify and repair that draft.
