My first time with Kingdom Hearts on Switch 2 left me with two reactions at once: the Keyblade combat and Disney-world adventure pulled me in, while the sheer volume of story material made it hard to know where to begin. The timing matters: as of October 7, 2026, the full collection is announced for release tomorrow, October 8. Square Enix had already made a free Kingdom Hearts III + Re Mind demo available, but the collection itself had not yet reached its announced release date.
Why Kingdom Hearts feels like a lot on a first visit
Kingdom Hearts brings together Disney and Square Enix characters and worlds in an action role-playing series built around Keyblade combat, friendship, and defending worlds from darkness. That is an inviting premise, but the Switch 2 collection is not just one game with a straightforward beginning and end: it brings together three packages, with both playable games and story material presented as movies or cutscene compilations.
Square Enix describes the collection as a chance to “Explore six KINGDOM HEARTS titles starting with the very first adventure.” The phrase “six titles” does not mean every item in the collection is a playable game. Two entries in 1.5+2.5 ReMIX are HD cutscene compilations, and χ Back Cover in HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue is a movie.

The mix of games and non-game presentations is a good reason the collection can feel overwhelming: there is a lot of story to take in, and not every part asks you to play. Nintendo describes 1.5+2.5 ReMIX as starting with the very first adventure, but official material does not provide a complete newcomer play-order recommendation.

What I could try before the collection’s release
Square Enix says the free Switch 2 demo for KINGDOM HEARTS III + Re Mind became available on June 10, 2026. It contains two sections: the opening through early Olympus, and a section in Toy Box through its midpoint. Save data from the opening section can carry over to the full game; Toy Box demo save data cannot. Because the full collection was still due the following day as of October 7, the demo is not a substitute for a complete collection playthrough.
Digital or physical: what Switch 2 buyers should know
Nintendo’s US listing identifies the collection as a digital Switch 2 release dated October 8, 2026. Square Enix also lists a physical Switch 2 edition, but says an internet connection is required to download additional data to play it. In other words, buyers should not assume the physical edition is fully playable from the cartridge or card alone. The exact download size and retail availability are not established here; Nintendo notes that preorder information can change.

If you own the older Switch Cloud Version
The older Nintendo Switch Cloud Version was discontinued from sale on June 9, 2026, and Square Enix says it is scheduled to remain playable until June 9, 2027 at 14:59 UTC. Eligible owners can transfer Cloud Version save data to the Switch 2 digital versions and receive discounts on corresponding digital versions. The discount does not apply to the physical collection.

How to approach the collection as a newcomer
If you want to start at the beginning, 1.5+2.5 ReMIX is the clearest entry point: Nintendo describes it as beginning with the very first adventure. Treat that as a practical starting point, not an official full-series order. If you want to sample the Switch 2 version before committing to the full collection, the available KINGDOM HEARTS III + Re Mind demo gives you a limited look at that game, rather than the series’ opening.
