A gigabit internet plan does not make every device in your home a gigabit device. The speed reaching a phone or computer depends on the entire path: your provider’s connection, router ports, any switches or adapters, the cable or Wi-Fi link, and the device itself. Before buying new equipment, compare a wired test with a Wi-Fi test and find where the speed drops.

What “gigabit internet” does—and doesn’t—promise

Gigabit describes the service tier delivered to your home, not a guaranteed speed for every device. A speed test on a phone or laptop measures more than the provider’s connection: it also reflects the router, the device’s network hardware, the connection between them, other network activity, and the test conditions. The FCC distinguishes advertised speeds from theoretical capacity in its consumer guide to broadband and Wi-Fi troubleshooting.

That difference explains how a household can pay for a fast plan yet see much lower results on a particular device. The slowest part of that device’s connection can become its practical ceiling. For example, a 100 Mbps Ethernet port cannot pass gigabit traffic at gigabit rates, even if the service and the rest of the network are faster.

There is no established, generalizable statistic showing what percentage of household devices cannot use a gigabit plan. The useful question is not how many devices are “too slow,” but which part of your own connection is limiting the result.

Find where the speed drops

Compare a provider or router-side test, if available, with a test on a capable computer connected directly to the router by Ethernet. Google Fiber likewise recommends a direct Ethernet connection as a faster and more stable way to connect than Wi-Fi in its 2 Gig guidance. That advice is provider-specific, but the wired-versus-wireless comparison is a useful diagnostic.

  1. Record a baseline. Note the test device, whether it is wired or on Wi-Fi, the time, download and upload results, and whether anyone else is streaming, gaming, downloading, or backing up files.
  2. Test by Ethernet. Use a computer and adapter capable of the plan’s speed, connected to a router LAN port that can support it. Avoid unnecessary switches or other intermediaries for this comparison.
  3. Compare like with like. Run more than one test under similar conditions. A single result is a measurement at a particular time, not proof that the provider is under-delivering or that the router needs replacement.
  4. Test Wi-Fi separately. Try near the router, then in the rooms where you normally use devices. Where both bands are available, compare 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz on the same device.

If the wired test is strong but Wi-Fi is weaker, investigate the wireless path. If both are low, check the service tier and provider status, then inspect the router ports, switches, cable, and computer adapter before concluding that the ISP is the problem.

Check the wired path: ports, adapters, and cable

Every wired component must support the speed you are trying to measure. Check the router’s WAN port (the connection facing the provider) and the LAN port used by the test computer, along with any switch between them. Then check the computer’s Ethernet adapter and, for a USB adapter, the USB port and adapter specifications. The actual link rate shown by the device’s network settings can help reveal a port or adapter negotiating below the expected rate.

A cable can also be part of the bottleneck if it is damaged or unsuitable for the equipment and distance. Replacing a cable is most relevant when inspection or testing points to a cable issue; it is not a general cure for slow Wi-Fi. In the specific context of compatible NBASE-T equipment, the NBASE-T Alliance technology page describes 2.5 and 5 Gbps signaling over existing Cat5e or Cat6 runs up to 100 meters. That capability depends on compatible equipment and a suitable installation; it does not mean any home cable run will deliver those rates.

TP-Link Dual-Band AX3000 Wi-Fi 6 Wireless Gigabit Internet Router for Home
  • Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
  • A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
  • Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
  • Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
  • Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.

If the wired result remains low after checking your local path, confirm the subscribed tier and ask your provider to verify the service handoff. For U.S. addresses, the FCC National Broadband Map shows provider-reported availability and advertised maximum speeds; it does not measure throughput to a device inside your home.

Why Wi-Fi falls short of the plan

Wi-Fi performance depends on both ends of the radio link: the router and the client device. The device’s Wi-Fi generation, supported band, distance from the router, walls and other obstructions, interference, and activity from other devices can all affect a result. A router’s advertised wireless capability does not guarantee that a phone or laptop can match it in a particular room.

  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.

The FCC says 2.4 GHz generally offers broader coverage but processes data less quickly than 5 GHz. A device farther from the router may therefore behave differently from one nearby, and a faster band is not automatically the better choice in every location. Google Fiber’s Wi-Fi speed guidance also discusses factors that can affect wireless performance.

Shared activity matters, too. The FCC consumer guide notes: “When multiple wireless devices are using the same Wi-Fi network, it can impact performance and create lag, or slower responses.” A busy network can affect results even when the plan and equipment are unchanged.

Choose a fix only after identifying the limit

  • Wired tests are low, too: verify your subscribed speed and provider status, then check router WAN and LAN port rates, switches, cable condition, and the client’s adapter. If the local path appears capable, ask the ISP to check the service handoff.
  • Wired is good but Wi-Fi is low: test closer to the router, compare available bands, and check the client’s Wi-Fi capability, obstructions, interference, and competing activity.
  • Only one device is slow: inspect that device’s network specifications and connection status. If it lacks Ethernet, a USB Ethernet adapter may help only if both the adapter and the host’s USB port support the needed rate.
  • Coverage is poor in particular rooms: first consider whether router placement or the home environment is weakening the signal. An equipment change is justified when tests or specifications identify the router as the limitation—not simply because a speed test over Wi-Fi is below the plan.

When evaluating a router, match its WAN and LAN port rates and wireless support to the service and devices you actually use. Consider coverage needs as well as advertised wireless rates. A replacement cable, adapter, or router can address a confirmed bottleneck; none can make a slower client or a difficult wireless path operate beyond its own limits.
