Moving a Windows user folder to another SSD can free space on the system drive, but that does not establish that Windows or apps will run faster. Microsoft advises keeping user profiles and ProgramData in their default locations in most deployments, and warns that relocating them can cause servicing problems and leave Store apps unsupported. The performance change in this title is an anecdotal observation: without the Windows version, relocation method, workload, and before-and-after measurements, its cause cannot be confirmed.
What moving the user folder can—and cannot—change
A Windows profile contains user-specific settings and data. Moving the complete profile is a broader change than moving personal folders such as Documents or Pictures. Depending on what was relocated, the change may reduce space used on the system drive or meet a storage-layout need. Microsoft identifies those as reasons people consider relocation, but does not say that putting a profile on a second SSD generally improves responsiveness. Microsoft’s servicing guidance recommends retaining the default locations unless a supported, validated deployment scenario calls for a move.
For this particular experience, the available facts do not identify the Windows version or build, which profile paths moved, the destination drive or its connection, the relocation method, or a measured workload. So “made a surprising difference” should be read as an observation about one PC, not proof that a profile move caused a general speed improvement.

Why the apparent difference needs a controlled comparison
Anecdotal improvement can have several possible explanations, but none is established here. For example, a move might reduce pressure on a nearly full system drive, or the two SSDs and the tested workload might behave differently. If both drives were already SSDs and had ample free space, relocating profile data alone would not demonstrate why responsiveness changed.

- This product has been replaced by our latest generation. Please search for the SANDISK Optimus GX 7100 NVMe SSD
- HIGH-OCTANE GAMING. Experience speeds up to 7,250MB/s read and 6,900MB/s write (1-2TB models), with up to 35% faster performance than previous generation.
- PURPOSE-BUILT. Designed for serious on-the-go gamers, with a PCIe Gen4 interface and SANDISK’s next generation TLC 3D NAND.
- MORE TIME TO CLEAR THAT CHECKPOINT. Built with laptops and handheld gaming devices in mind, with up to 100% more power efficiency over the previous generation.
- DO MORE WITH DASHBOARD. Ensure your drive is optimized for prime performance with the downloadable WD_BLACK Dashboard (Windows only).
To substantiate a performance claim, record the configuration and compare the same task before and after the change. Useful details include:
- Windows edition, version, and build.
- Exactly what moved: the full profile, selected known folders, AppData, or another path.
- The relocation method and whether Windows was freshly installed or already in use.
- Both drives’ models, interfaces, and free space at the time of testing.
- A specific workload and metric, such as launch time or task completion time, with repeated runs under comparable conditions.
Report the result as applying to that tested setup. Without those details and measurements, describe the change as an anecdote rather than attributing it to the second SSD.

Full profile relocation carries Windows support risks
Microsoft’s guidance applies to supported Windows Client and Windows Server versions. It warns that moving user profile folders or ProgramData can make updates, hotfixes, service packs, or in-place upgrades fail or behave unreliably. The level of support can depend on the folder moved, Windows version, and update deployment method; newer versions may handle some scenarios better, but that is not a blanket endorsement of moving a live profile.
There is also a specific Store-app caveat. Microsoft says Microsoft Store apps are not supported or expected to work if the Users directory, an individual user profile, or ProgramData has been moved from its default location. Its separate support article advises against changing the default location of C:Users or an individual profile; the relocation methods it links are provided as-is and intended for test environments. See Microsoft’s Store-app guidance.

Moving selected folders is a different option
If the goal is to move personal files or ease space pressure, consider redirecting selected known folders rather than relocating the complete profile. Microsoft’s Folder Redirection documentation describes pointing a known folder to another local path or a file share. That is distinct from moving an entire profile or arbitrary subfolders such as AppData: applications may expect profile data to remain at its default path, and the fact that one known folder can be redirected does not mean every profile folder is safe to move.
Folder Redirection and roaming profiles are documented Windows features often used in managed environments. Roaming profiles carry settings between computers; they are not the same thing as manually relocating a live profile to another SSD on a personal PC. Check that the particular folder and configuration are supported for your Windows version and use case before making a change.

Choose based on the goal, not an assumed speed boost
| Approach | What it changes | Main consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Relocate the full profile or Users directory | Moves a broad set of user data and settings away from its default path. | Microsoft recommends default locations except for supported, validated deployment scenarios; servicing and Store-app support risks apply. |
| Redirect selected known folders | Changes the path of particular known folders to a local folder or file share. | More targeted for personal-file storage goals, but does not make arbitrary profile subfolders safe to relocate. |
Before changing profile paths, make a recoverable backup and understand how you would restore the original location if sign-in, updates, or apps stop working. If you only need room for files, a targeted folder move is usually a narrower change than relocating the profile. If you are considering a full relocation for a managed deployment, follow a Microsoft-supported and validated scenario for that environment rather than treating a consumer-PC anecdote as a procedure.
