If an LLM can write shared memory straight into your Obsidian vault and commit the result, a malformed or unwanted note can become durable before you review it. A practical defense is to put deterministic checks between the model and the write: reject paths outside the vault, reject notes that do not match an expected format, and require a review marker before a commit. These are policy choices for this workflow—not a three-gate system prescribed by Anthropic, and not a way to prove that a memory is true.
What the gates can—and cannot—protect
Claude Code hooks let you run logic at defined points in the tool lifecycle. A PreToolUse hook runs after Claude selects a tool but before that tool executes, so it is a suitable place to inspect a proposed write or command and block it. A PostToolUse hook runs after the tool completes; it can log or flag what happened, but it cannot prevent that completed action. A Stop hook is useful for deterministic end-of-response checks, not as a substitute for blocking a particular write before it happens.
Anthropic’s documentation describes these events and their configuration; it does not prescribe the three regex gates below. Treat them as an example policy to adapt to your vault and commit workflow. Regex can check paths, formats, and simple allowlists. It cannot establish whether a note’s claims are accurate, relevant, or safe to remember.

Anthropic recommends starting with one simple hook that solves an actual workflow friction point. See the Claude Code hook configuration guidance and the current hooks reference for event and schema details.

Where to put a check in the Claude Code lifecycle
| Event | When it runs | Best fit | Can it stop the proposed write? |
|---|---|---|---|
PreToolUse |
After tool selection, before execution | Validate a proposed path, file content, or command before allowing it | Yes, when the hook returns a blocking result in the documented form for that event |
PostToolUse |
After the tool completes | Log, audit, or trigger review of a completed write | No; the tool action has already run |
Stop |
At the end of Claude’s response | Run deterministic end-of-task checks or report outstanding review work | Not as a pre-write guard; use it for a later workflow check |
Hook matchers determine which tool calls trigger a hook. Anthropic’s examples include Write and Write|Edit; matchers are case-sensitive. A matcher narrows when the hook runs—it does not itself validate the arguments. Hook processes receive JSON on standard input. Follow the current event-specific schema when parsing that input and returning a decision. Anthropic documents exit code 2 as a blocking error and also documents structured block or deny decisions; do not assume that arbitrary output or every exit code has identical meaning for every event.
Three gates for a vault-bound memory workflow
The patterns here illustrate a deliberately narrow policy. They are not drop-in universal expressions: adapt the paths, file conventions, and argument parsing to your actual vault. Validate the hook’s JSON input, extract the relevant fields with a JSON parser, and apply the regex to the extracted value—not to an untrusted shell command assembled by concatenating raw input.
Gate 1: Allow writes only inside the intended vault
Input: the resolved destination path from the proposed Write or Edit call. Allow: a file whose canonical path is within the intended vault and whose filename meets your policy. Block: absolute paths elsewhere, traversal paths such as ../../private.txt, or paths that resolve through a symlink outside the vault.
A simple filename pattern might be ^[A-Za-z0-9][A-Za-z0-9 _-]*.md$, which permits ordinary Markdown names and rejects slashes and unusual punctuation. It is not a path-containment check. Resolve the path against the vault root and verify containment separately; string-prefix tests can be fooled by similarly named directories, and symlinks need explicit handling. For example, Projects/Meeting notes.md could pass a vault-relative policy, while ../../Secrets.md must fail even if its final filename matches.

Return the documented blocking result for the event when this check fails. Do not let a later gate’s success override an out-of-vault destination.
Gate 2: Require the expected note shape
Input: the proposed note contents. Allow: only the narrow structure your shared-memory folder is meant to contain. Block: missing required fields or content outside the intended format.
For example, if every note must begin with YAML front matter containing a title and a type, a starting pattern could be ^---n(?=[sS]*?^title: .+n)(?=[sS]*?^type: (person|project|decision)n)[sS]*?n---n in a regex engine that supports multiline anchors. This checks for a recognizable shape and one of three allowed type values; it does not validate full YAML syntax, uniqueness of keys, or whether the title and type accurately describe the note. Test the exact engine and newline behavior used by your script. A front matter block with type: project may pass; a block with no type line should fail.

Keep this gate aligned with the real format. If legitimate notes have optional fields or different templates, encode those cases intentionally instead of making the pattern permissive enough to accept anything.

Gate 3: Restrict what can be committed
Input: the staged file list and, if your policy requires it, a review marker or approval state. Allow: only expected Markdown changes in the memory area that have passed review. Block: unrelated staged files, deletions, generated artifacts, or changes that have not been reviewed.
A path allowlist pattern such as ^Shared Memory/[A-Za-z0-9][A-Za-z0-9 _-]*.md$ can screen staged paths, but a regex over filenames cannot inspect the full Git diff or establish that a note is acceptable. A commit hook should enumerate staged paths safely, reject anything outside the allowed set, and require an explicit human review step if that is your policy. Do not infer that Claude Code automatically commits because a hook exists: the commit mechanism is a separate part of the user’s setup.

Configure hooks carefully
Hooks are configured in Claude Code JSON settings. The exact setting scope and event schema can change, so use Anthropic’s current reference when wiring the examples into a real configuration. A matcher for a write tool should be case-sensitive and limited to the tools you intend to inspect. Keep the hook script in a trusted location and use an absolute path where practical.

For official setup, event behavior, and security details, consult Anthropic’s hook configuration article and Claude Code hooks reference. Anthropic also describes sandboxing and permissions as additional controls. A regex gate is one layer, not a complete security boundary.
Review, recovery, and the role of version control
Separate prevention from detection and recovery. A pre-tool check can stop a disallowed write before it happens; a post-tool log can make completed activity auditable; Git can show and reverse changes after they land. For a shared-memory workflow, keep notes in a dedicated vault subdirectory, inspect the diff before accepting a commit, and ensure you can restore the last known-good version. Use a Stop hook for deterministic checks that should run at the end of a task, rather than treating it as a substitute for a pre-write gate. Anthropic’s guidance on deterministic checks, permissions, and sandboxing is in its Claude Code workflow guidance.
These controls reduce accidental or out-of-policy writes; they do not make generated memories trustworthy. Review factual claims against their context before treating them as durable shared knowledge.
