i-doit is IT documentation and configuration management software built around a configuration management database (CMDB). It helps organizations record IT assets and services as configuration items, link those records to show dependencies, and connect the information to service-management workflows. Its practical value depends on choosing the right deployment and integrations—and keeping the data accurate.
What is i-doit?
i-doit is software for documenting IT infrastructure and managing configuration information. Its central CMDB is designed to hold structured records for items such as hardware, software, networks, users, locations, services, and contracts, along with relationships between them. The vendor describes the product as supporting IT asset management (ITAM) and IT service management (ITSM), including connections between configuration data and service or process records. See the i-doit product information and the i-doit Knowledge Base for current product details.
That makes i-doit more than a place to keep an asset list. A linked record can represent how a device, application, location, or service relates to other parts of the environment. The vendor describes capabilities such as change history and impact analysis; these are product claims, not independent performance findings. Confirm that the functions you need are included in the edition and configuration you plan to use.
What a CMDB records—and why relationships matter
A CMDB is a structured database of configuration items (CIs) and the relationships among them. A CI may be a server, software package, network component, user, service, location, or contract. The relationships provide context: for example, an organization can document which service depends on which infrastructure records. i-doit’s Knowledge Base explains the term and the role of a CMDB in What is a CMDB?

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A spreadsheet can list assets, but a list alone does not capture those dependencies. i-doit presents its CMDB as a searchable, structured alternative to scattered spreadsheets, notes, and wiki pages. A shared database can support documentation and service workflows, but its usefulness rests on whether its records and links accurately reflect the real environment.
What can i-doit help an IT team document?
The vendor describes the CMDB as a central place to manage configuration data and connect it to support processes. Typical documentation areas include:

i-doit also describes links to helpdesk and change-management processes. The intended benefit is to give teams a common information source when documenting infrastructure or handling service work; the product materials do not constitute an independent measurement of the resulting business benefits. See the i-doit CMDB overview for the vendor’s description of its CMDB capabilities.
How i-doit can get and exchange configuration data
Teams can enter information manually, import it, or connect i-doit with external systems, depending on available integrations and the deployment. The vendor lists an API and examples spanning service desks, inventory tools, directory services, and monitoring systems. Examples in its materials include OTRS Community Edition, KIX Service Management, Zammad, JDisc, OCS, LDAP or Active Directory, Nagios, and Checkmk. Compatibility and supported versions vary by specific deployment, so verify them with the vendor before planning around a named connection.

The i-doit API use cases describe external systems reading CMDB data and creating or updating device records, with regular or event-based synchronization. These are possible integration patterns, not a guarantee that every connector is included, works out of the box, or synchronizes in real time in every configuration. For automated asset discovery, i-doit points to specialist inventory systems such as JDisc or OCS; confirm the setup and compatibility details for the versions you intend to run.
Keeping CMDB data useful over time
Integrations and discovery can reduce some manual entry, but they do not remove the need for data governance. A CMDB is only as useful as the accuracy of its records and relationships. Before deployment, decide who owns key CI categories, how changes will be reflected, and how teams will handle missing, stale, or conflicting information.

Deployment options and installation considerations
i-doit’s product information describes both on-premises and cloud availability. Which option, functions, and contract terms apply depends on the edition and current offering; check directly with the vendor. The product page also advertises a 30-day free trial, but trial availability and terms can change.
The captured setup documentation describes database configuration, including at least two databases and a dedicated database user. It includes MySQL/MariaDB connection examples, but that detail is not a complete current compatibility matrix, sizing guide, or production architecture. Use the current i-doit installation guide to check requirements for the version you intend to deploy rather than treating an example configuration as a universal production recommendation.

How to evaluate whether i-doit fits
There is no independent, like-for-like comparison or benchmark established here, so assess the product against your own requirements rather than treating vendor capability descriptions as proof of fit. During evaluation, verify:
Quick Recap
- Deployment: whether the specific edition supports the organization’s on-premises or cloud requirements.
- Data model: whether it can represent the configuration items, attributes, and dependencies that matter to your services.
- Data acquisition: which imports, discovery connections, and synchronization patterns are actually available.
- Integration fit: whether the required service desk, inventory, directory, and monitoring products and versions are supported.
- Add-ons: whether a needed capability requires a separately available extension.
- Governance: how permissions, ownership, and review practices will keep records trustworthy.
