I built my personal portfolio with Framer around a retro college-web aesthetic. The key decision was to treat it as a portfolio first: make the work easy to find, give each project room to tell its story, and use the visual style to give the site a distinct identity. Framer documents both a portfolio template and a blank canvas as starting points, along with tools for organizing projects and publishing the finished site.

Start with the work the portfolio needs to show

A portfolio is easier to navigate when its structure follows the work rather than the design motif. Framer’s portfolio guidance recommends organizing a site around projects and case studies. That gives visitors a direct route to the work, while the visual treatment can shape how the portfolio feels without obscuring what it contains.

For this portfolio, the retro college-web direction is the creative brief; it is not a Framer feature or a preset aesthetic. Framer provides the canvas and publishing workflow, while the visual identity comes from the design decisions made for the site.

Choose a portfolio template or a blank canvas

Framer documents two ways to begin: start from a portfolio template or start with a blank canvas. The template gives you an existing structure to adapt; the blank canvas gives you a custom starting layout to build from. Framer’s guidance does not establish that one route is faster or better, so the choice depends on whether you want to adapt a starting structure or make those layout decisions yourself.

Starting point What it offers Best fit
Portfolio template A pre-existing portfolio structure to customize You want a starting framework for presenting projects
Blank canvas A clean starting point for a custom layout You want to define the structure from the outset

Whichever route you choose, make the project presentation work before layering on decorative details. A distinctive style is most effective when visitors can still scan the portfolio and understand what each project is about.

Give projects and case studies a repeatable structure

Framer says its CMS can organize recurring portfolio content such as case studies, writing, galleries, and project pages. That can be useful when several entries need a consistent structure: each can present its own material while following the same overall content pattern. CMS is an available option, not a requirement for every portfolio, and the product documentation does not establish that it was used for this particular site.

Before building out multiple project pages, decide what information belongs in each one. A consistent pattern helps people move between projects without forcing every project to tell the same story.

Publish on a Framer subdomain or connect a custom domain

Framer says publishing generates a framer.app domain. Its help documentation also explains how to connect a custom domain. These are distinct publishing choices: use the generated address to publish on Framer’s domain, or connect a domain you own if you want the portfolio to use it.

For a custom domain, Framer’s help documentation, marked updated September 15, 2026, says DNS changes may take up to 48 hours to propagate worldwide, though they are typically faster. Allow for that window when planning a launch; a domain connection may not appear everywhere immediately.

Keep the visual identity and publishing decisions separate

The retro college-web aesthetic is a design direction, while template versus blank canvas, content organization, and domain setup are implementation decisions. Keeping those questions separate makes it easier to judge the portfolio on both fronts: does the presentation express the intended identity, and can visitors readily find and follow the work?

Framer’s official portfolio page describes designing visually, refining project stories, and publishing without writing code. Those are product claims, not an independent comparison of builders or a guarantee about any individual site. The practical takeaway is to choose the starting point and publishing setup that suit the portfolio, then make the visual style serve its content.
