Chatbot Studio is an open-source project for configuring and testing AI agents, then publishing them as website chatbots or connecting them to WhatsApp. Its defining design choice is to keep an agent’s reusable behavior separate from each channel’s presentation and publishing settings. Project author Mohammad Joud Julius describes it as MIT-licensed and self-hostable; the capabilities below are the project’s published description, not an independent review or verification of a running installation.
Why separate the agent from the chatbot?
A chatbot often combines two different concerns: what the AI can do and how a visitor encounters it. Chatbot Studio’s design separates them. The agent holds the intelligence and runtime configuration; a published chatbot holds the channel-specific experience. That lets the same configured agent be tested and potentially reused across channels without making its instructions and tools part of the widget’s appearance settings.
Julius summarizes the principle: “The agent should.” The agent configuration may include its model and provider, instructions, tools, MCP servers, knowledge, memory, skills, guardrails, sandbox settings, and human-in-the-loop behavior. A website chatbot, by contrast, may set its appearance, allowed domains, usage limits, launcher, welcome experience, suggested prompts, and publication state. The project announcement explains this split as the foundation for configuring an agent, testing it, and then publishing a channel experience using the saved configuration.
What can you configure and test?
Models, tools, and agent behavior
The author says the studio supports OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, Groq, OpenRouter, Ollama, and OpenAI-compatible endpoints. Agents can also be configured with tools, MCP servers, memory, skills, guardrails, and runtime controls. The built-in test chat is described as using the agent’s saved configuration, so the intended workflow is to test the configured agent rather than a disconnected mockup.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For MCP connections, the project description lists stdio, SSE, and streamable HTTP transports. This is a statement of the project’s intended support, not an independent compatibility audit of every server or transport implementation.
Knowledge and retrieval
Julius describes adding knowledge from text, URLs, PDF, DOCX, Markdown, CSV, and JSON. The system processes source material into chunks and embeddings, then retrieves relevant content during conversations. That is the project’s described retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) flow; the announcement does not publish independent accuracy or retrieval-quality measurements.
Teams, workflows, and human approval
The project also describes agent teams and visual workflows. The workflow editor uses XYFlow, and reported capabilities include directed acyclic graph (DAG) execution, conditional paths, input mapping, human approval, persisted runs, scheduled execution, and execution traces. These features are aimed at workflows that require more than a single conversational response, such as branching tasks or review before an action proceeds.
How does it reach users?
Website chatbot
The primary web embedding is described as a browser-native custom element using Shadow DOM, intended to keep the widget’s styles isolated from the host page. The project says it can generate integration examples for native HTML, React, Vue, Angular, and WordPress. Site operators can configure presentation and publishing controls separately from the agent, including appearance and allowed domains.

For WhatsApp, Julius describes a separate Node.js bridge built around Baileys. The listed functions include QR-code pairing, persistence of authentication, incoming and outgoing messages, quoted replies, typing state, debounce windows, audio transcription, and optional generated voice replies. These are project-reported features; their availability and behavior should be confirmed against the current repository and setup before relying on them.
Human handoff
The announcement describes routing conversations into queues such as General Support, Technical Support, Sales, and Billing. When a human is assigned, that person takes ownership and the assistant is supposed to stop responding as though a handoff had not happened. This addresses the operational question behind “Can customers talk to a human if the AI gets stuck?”—but teams still need to define queue ownership and staffing for their own service.
How are quality and failures inspected?
The project describes repeatable evaluation suites and monitoring for token usage, cost, latency, tool calls, traces, errors, sessions, and visitor feedback. It also describes prompt optimization in which proposed changes are reviewed by a human. Together, these are meant to support a configure-test-evaluate-publish loop: inspect how the saved agent behaves, identify issues, and review prompt changes before adopting them.
The article does not provide quantitative evaluation results, performance benchmarks, or reliability findings. Monitoring and evaluation features are useful infrastructure, but they do not by themselves demonstrate that a particular agent is accurate or safe for a given task.

Julius reports encrypted provider credentials and MCP secrets, JWT authentication, optional TOTP two-factor authentication, short-lived widget sessions, domain allowlists, rate limiting, visitor IP hashing, role-based access, and queue-based conversation access. Those are project-reported mechanisms, not findings from an independent security assessment. The reviewed project materials do not establish a penetration-test result, vulnerability assessment, or production reliability record.

For a deployment handling real customer data, operators should assess the current code and configuration, secure secrets and infrastructure, and determine whether the controls meet their own threat model and compliance obligations. A feature list is not a substitute for independent assurance.
Who is Chatbot Studio for?
The project is aimed at developers and teams who want one place to configure agents, test them against saved settings, and publish through a website widget or WhatsApp, while retaining the option to self-host. Its separation of agent behavior from channel presentation may be useful when an organization wants to reuse one agent configuration across more than one user interface.
Self-hosting also means operating the application’s supporting services and deployment, rather than simply enabling a managed chatbot. Teams should weigh that operational work against their need for control, their existing infrastructure, and the importance of independently validating security and behavior. The project announcement does not supply a verified competitor comparison, adoption figures, cost savings, or performance results.
