An AI API directory is more useful when it records those dimensions separately instead of treating compatibility as a yes-or-no badge.
This is a practical framework for evaluating providers and describing them in a directory. It does not claim that any particular provider has been tested or that a specific directory contains verified entries.
What “OpenAI-compatible” does—and does not—tell you
Compatibility is an implementation claim with a scope. A service might accept Chat Completions-style requests while differing in supported fields, response behavior, streaming events, authentication, error handling, or operational details. A familiar endpoint is a useful starting point, not evidence that an application can switch providers without changes.
OpenAI’s API reference documents more than request and response schemas: its API surface includes endpoints, streaming, client-library methods, authentication, errors, rate limits, and request IDs. A directory should make clear which of these it describes when it uses the word “compatible.”

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Why a shared request format is not feature parity
Applications depend on more than the shape of an initial request. They may use structured outputs, image or other multimodal input, hosted tools, or incremental processing of streamed tool calls. Provider support and behavior can vary across these capabilities even when the request format looks familiar.
OpenAI’s Agents SDK model guide warns: “You need to be aware of feature differences between model providers, or you may run into errors.” It also notes that some compatible providers may stream tool-call deltas unreliably for incremental processing. An SDK can help handle provider differences, but SDK behavior does not establish that the underlying APIs are identical.

- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
For an integration decision, check the exact capabilities your application uses. “Supports tools” is not enough if the application relies on a particular tool format or expects partial tool-call arguments to arrive reliably as a stream.
Compatibility layers can trade native features for reuse
A compatibility layer can save work by letting existing code call a service through a familiar interface. The trade-off is that the layer may not expose every feature available through the provider’s native API.

Google AI for Developers’ Partner and library integrations documentation presents OpenAI compatibility as a way to reuse existing code, while cautioning: “Model-specific features (Native video, Caching) may not be available.” If a product depends on such a feature, compare the compatibility route with the native integration before choosing an interface.
Gateways may offer both unified and provider-native paths
A gateway’s unified endpoint and its provider-specific endpoints answer different needs. Cloudflare documents a unified endpoint for providers that accept OpenAI-shaped Chat Completions requests, alongside provider-specific endpoints for native request formats and more control over the integration path. Its custom-provider documentation describes configuration for providers beyond the built-in integrations.

Cloudflare’s Unified API (OpenAI compat) page, last updated October 2, 2026, labels the compatibility endpoint “Deprecated for single-model calls.” That notice concerns standard single-model calls through this endpoint; the page says existing integrations and dynamic routes continue to be supported. It should not be read as a deprecation of every Cloudflare AI Gateway capability or as a general warning about other providers. Check the current documentation before adopting or extending this particular path.
Endpoint, region, and routing can change the answer
Compatibility is also deployment-specific. The API surface exposed at one endpoint may not match another, and regional availability or routing can constrain which models and features are usable in a given deployment.

OpenAI’s Bedrock deployment guide says supported endpoints offer compatible Responses and Chat Completions APIs, while noting that feature coverage differs. It also directs developers to consider regional availability and routing. Accordingly, a directory entry should identify the endpoint and deployment context it describes rather than imply that a provider behaves the same everywhere.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What an AI API directory should record
A useful directory makes its claims specific enough to guide an integration choice. Separate documented capabilities from verified behavior, and attach any verification result to the precise provider, model, version, endpoint, and date involved.
| Directory field | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| API surface | Chat Completions, Responses, or another request surface; identify the endpoint. | A shared Chat Completions interface does not imply support for Responses or native formats. |
| Feature support | Documented support for tools, structured output, multimodal input, and relevant hosted features. | These capabilities can differ even when basic requests are compatible. |
| Streaming behavior | Documented event behavior and any verified handling of streamed tool-call deltas. | Incremental application logic may fail if stream events are missing or unreliable. |
| Model discovery and naming | How models are listed and named, and which model identifier the entry covers. | Model availability and the identifier used in a request are part of the integration contract. |
| Authentication and errors | Authentication method and documented error behavior; distinguish known details from unverified ones. | Request compatibility alone does not establish operational compatibility. |
| Native-format access | Whether provider-specific endpoints are available alongside a unified compatibility endpoint. | Native paths may expose options unavailable through a compatibility layer. |
| Geography and routing | Region, endpoint, and relevant routing context for the claim. | Availability and feature coverage can depend on deployment location and path. |
| Verification record | Provider, model, version, endpoint, date, and whether a statement is documented or tested. | Compatibility claims can age; a dated, scoped result is more useful than a timeless badge. |
How to use the directory before integrating
- Start with your application’s dependencies. List the API surface, tools, output constraints, modalities, streaming behavior, and hosted features your code actually uses.
- Match those needs to a specific entry. Check the named endpoint and model, not just the provider’s compatibility label.
- Compare the unified and native paths. If a required feature is absent or unclear in the compatibility route, consult the provider’s native API documentation.
- Check deployment context. Confirm region, routing, authentication, and model naming for the environment where you plan to run the integration.
- Validate the behaviors your application relies on. Treat documentation as a guide to what is claimed, and record any independent verification with its model, version, endpoint, and date.
For directory maintainers, this distinction is central: a listing should show what is documented, what has been checked, and what remains unspecified. Do not turn a provider’s broad compatibility statement into an implied test result.
