A small Python tracker can tell you whether a brand or URL appeared in answers to a chosen set of prompts on selected platforms. It cannot, by itself, tell you your universal “AI rank” or how often people saw your brand across all AI search results. Scaling the script makes that distinction more important: responses vary, official data has coverage limits, and provider quotas can throttle collection. Treat the tracker as a sampler, preserve what it actually observed, and keep answer mentions, Google Search impressions, and referral visits as separate measures.
What does a simple AI visibility tracker actually measure?
A basic tracker has an understandable shape: a fixed prompt list, requests sent to one or more answer platforms, and a table recording whether a brand or its pages appeared in the returned answers. That table is useful as a record of observations. It is not a direct measurement of a platform’s complete audience, a stable position in a ranking, or the chance that any person will see the brand.
Before collecting more data, define the fields. These measures describe different things and should not be collapsed into one number:

Store prompt ID and text, platform, run timestamp, locale or region when controlled, response and extracted citations, parser version, and whether the run completed or was partial. Keeping the raw response alongside parsed fields lets you distinguish a changed answer from a changed parser. This is a measurement-design recommendation, not a vendor-defined schema.

Why does an AI visibility tracker give different results each time?
A prompt response is an observation, not a fixed property of a brand. Repeat the same prompt and the answer may change; change the platform, location, date, or wording and the conditions change as well. A 2026 preprint examined repeated observations across Perplexity Search, OpenAI SearchGPT, and Google Gemini, framing visibility measures as estimates of an underlying response distribution rather than fixed values. It does not establish a universal ideal sample count or collection schedule.
That means a single run should be presented as “this response mentioned the brand,” not as proof that the brand is consistently visible. Likewise, a missed mention in one answer does not establish that the platform never mentions it.
Make repeated observations interpretable
- Keep prompts stable and version them when their wording changes.
- Record platform and model/version when available, plus locale, date, and time.
- Retain the raw answer and the extraction output so a parser error is not mistaken for a platform change.
- Report the number of completed observations next to any rate. Make clear which prompts, platforms, and time period the denominator covers.
- Describe the result as a sample estimate. Do not imply a confidence interval or statistical guarantee unless you have selected and justified a method for producing it.
For example, “the brand was mentioned in 6 of 20 completed runs for these prompts on this platform during this period” is interpretable. “The brand has 30% AI visibility” is not, unless “visibility” is explicitly defined and its scope is stated.

How do I track my brand’s visibility in AI search results?
Use the measurement source that matches the question. Google’s official Search Console Generative AI performance report includes impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode. Its dimensions can group results by page, country, date, and device. The report is Google-specific; it is not a combined view of answer engines.
Google says eligibility for generative AI features still depends on ordinary Search requirements, including indexing and crawlability, and eligibility does not guarantee that a page will be served. Google Search Central also cautions: “No third-party tool has access to our internal ranking or AI systems.” A prompt tracker can sample visible answers, but it cannot reveal Google’s private ranking or AI signals.
Account for Search Console’s reporting limits
Search Console reporting has aggregation and completeness constraints. Google’s Search Analytics API can return grouped and filtered results, but Google explicitly does not guarantee every row; it returns top rows subject to internal limitations. The Generative AI report also has table limits: Google Search Console Help documents a 1,000-row table limit. Recent values can be preliminary, and chart totals can differ from table totals when aggregation changes with the selected dimensions.

These are not reasons to discard Search Console data. They are reasons to label the scope accurately and avoid treating an API response as a complete export of every eligible row. If a chart and a table do not match, check the selected dimensions and aggregation rather than assuming one is a simple duplicate of the other.
How can I monitor whether ChatGPT mentions or cites my website?
A prompt-based tracker can record whether a website is named or cited in the responses it collects from ChatGPT search. That is a sample of answers under the tracker’s chosen prompts and conditions, not a count of every exposure.
For visits, OpenAI documents referral attribution using utm_source=chatgpt.com for publishers that allow OAI-SearchBot. Analytics can use that referral information to identify attributed sessions. A referral session is evidence of a tracked visit, not an answer mention count; the absence of a referral does not prove that the site was absent from an answer. An answer may be seen without generating a click.

What breaks when I scale a Python API tracker?
1. Non-repeatable outputs get mistaken for rankings
At small scale, it is tempting to run a prompt once and record a yes-or-no result. At larger scale, the same shortcut can turn normal variation into a misleading trend line. Preserve each observation instead of overwriting the previous answer, and calculate summaries from a clearly defined set of completed runs. If a platform or model version is unavailable, record that absence rather than inventing a value.
2. API responses are incomplete or differently aggregated
More requests do not remove Search Console’s row-return limits or make its report cover other platforms. Keep Google’s reported impressions separate from prompt-run observations, and make incomplete API results visible in the data product rather than silently treating them as full coverage.
3. Polling runs into quotas and throttling
Google Search Console API quotas include load and request-rate limits scoped across site, user, and project. Gemini limits also vary by tier and account state, so available capacity can change. A polling workload that worked for one site or account may not keep working as the number of prompts, properties, or runs increases.

Build for variable capacity rather than assuming a fixed request budget. Keep provider limits configurable, bound concurrency, and use retries with backoff for transient throttling. Mark a run as failed or partial when it cannot finish; do not count missing responses as negative mentions. These are engineering practices for protecting measurement integrity, not a queue or database design mandated by providers.
4. A single “visibility” score mixes incompatible signals
Google Search impressions count a different event from a citation in a sampled answer, and both differ from a tracked analytics referral. Adding them together without a definition produces a number that is difficult to interpret or reproduce. If a dashboard needs a combined indicator, document the inputs, units, scope, and calculation; otherwise, show the measures separately.
Scaling checklist for a Python tracker
- Define each metric. Specify what qualifies as a mention, citation, or referral and what its denominator is.
- Keep an observation record. Save the prompt, platform, timestamp, controlled locale, raw response, extracted output, parser version, and completion status.
- Preserve history. Store each run as a new observation so changes in answers and extraction logic can be inspected.
- Expose partial runs. Display failed requests, throttling, and incomplete data; never silently convert them to “not mentioned.”
- Configure provider limits. Treat quotas as provider- and account-dependent; bound concurrency and use backoff for transient failures.
- Use official Google reporting for Google’s available AI impression data. Be explicit that its report covers AI Overviews and AI Mode, not all answer engines.
- Keep analytics attribution separate. Treat ChatGPT referral sessions as visits, not as a proxy for all answer exposures.
- Label every summary with its scope. Include prompt set, platform, period, locale where controlled, and completed sample size.
What the tracker cannot tell you
A Python tracker built around sampled prompts can report what its collection captured and how its extraction rules classified those outputs. The evidence described here does not establish a universally correct sample size, schedule, confidence-interval method, database, or architecture. Nor does an answer sample reveal a platform’s complete answer distribution or guarantee how it will respond to another person.
For Google, use Search Console as the official source for the available Generative AI performance report, while respecting its dimensions, aggregation, and row limitations. For ChatGPT, treat documented referral attribution as a measure of attributed visits. For answer mentions and citations, describe the platform-specific observations and their sample conditions. Those boundaries make a small tracker more useful, not less: readers can see exactly what was measured and what remains outside the data.
