A personal planner can work without a conventional server: keep its data on the device and make core features available offline. The harder part begins when you add sync. Two devices can edit the same item independently, and moving data between them does not decide what those edits mean or which one the planner should keep.
This is the architectural lesson behind building a planner local-first: offline storage can simplify the first version, but synchronization is a product behavior as much as a data-transfer feature. The specific database and conflict policy matter, so the examples below explain the mechanics without assuming which technology this planner uses.
What “without a traditional backend” means for a planner
In a local-first design, the device stores the planner’s data and the app can use that data without reaching a server. That can keep basic tasks such as viewing and editing plans available offline. It does not necessarily mean the app will never use a server: a remote service may later help move changes among devices or provide backup.

The distinction is useful because “no backend” can describe the first operating mode, not the entire lifetime of the application. Once a user expects the same planner on multiple devices, some mechanism must communicate changes between separate copies of the data.
Why adding sync changes the problem
Synchronization has to account for replicas—separate copies of the data—that may change while disconnected. A laptop and phone can each accept edits offline. When they reconnect, the system must discover and handle changes that do not fit neatly into a single sequence.

Apache CouchDB describes document updates as optimistic: a client edits a revision, and it can receive an edit conflict if another client has already changed that document. CouchDB’s documentation says, “The CouchDB storage system treats edit conflicts as a common state, not an exceptional one.” This is a CouchDB design principle, not a claim about the planner’s implementation. What happens when two devices edit the same task
Imagine the same task is on two devices. While offline, one device changes its due date; the other changes its title. Those edits may be compatible, and an application could combine them. But if both devices change the due date differently, the planner needs a policy. Merely transferring both copies cannot establish which date the user intended.
A winning revision is not automatically a sensible merge
CouchDB can deterministically select a winning revision while retaining other conflicting revisions in history. Determinism gives replicas a consistent way to identify a winner; it does not guarantee that the chosen revision best reflects the user’s intent. The application must define what the user sees
PouchDB’s guide states, “With PouchDB, conflict resolution is entirely under your control.” That places the policy at the application level: the planner might merge compatible fields, preserve alternatives, prompt the user, or apply another defined rule. This describes PouchDB’s approach, not the choice made in this planner. Apache PouchDB guide, “Conflicts”
A useful account of a real implementation should name the data being edited, whether the changes can be combined, and what happens to the version that does not win. Without those details, “sync works” leaves an important user question unanswered: can an edit disappear, and how can it be recovered?

Replication direction shapes what “sync” promises
Replication can be one-way or bidirectional. With one-way replication, changes flow from one side to another; with bidirectional replication, each side can contribute changes. Those are different user expectations, not interchangeable labels for the same behavior. Apache PouchDB replication guide
For a planner, the chosen flow affects whether users should expect to edit on every device, whether one copy acts as the source of truth, and what happens when devices reconnect after separate edits. The transport direction still does not specify the conflict policy: an implementation needs to explain both where changes travel and how competing revisions are handled.
Questions a planner’s sync design should answer
- Offline use: Which planner functions remain available when the device has no connection, and where is the data persisted?
- Data flow: Is replication one-way or bidirectional, and which copies can originate edits?
- Conflict detection: How does the system recognize that two replicas changed the same item independently?
- Recovery: Are losing revisions retained so a user or the application can recover information?
- Resolution: Does the app choose a version, merge fields, keep alternatives, or ask the user?
- Deployment burden: What infrastructure and application logic are needed for the actual setup?
These questions separate offline storage, reliable data transfer, and conflict handling. A design can do well at one and still leave another unresolved.
What this architecture story can—and cannot—claim
The general engineering problem is clear: local storage can make a planner useful offline, while multi-device synchronization introduces independently edited copies that need an explicit policy. Official PouchDB and CouchDB documentation provides concrete examples of those patterns and mechanics.
The available facts do not identify the planner’s database, runtime, transport, number of users, data model, conflict incident, or final resolution strategy. Naming a particular technology or describing a specific failure as part of this build would therefore go beyond what is established. A technically complete account of the implementation needs those details, especially the exact edit scenario and the behavior the app chose.
