If your PC can reach the internet but can’t see a shared drive, printer, or another computer on your home network, check its Windows network profile before replacing your router. A connection marked Public is treated as less trusted and can limit local discoverability; on a network you trust, Private is usually the appropriate profile for sharing and discovery. Microsoft says a Windows network reset can set known connections to Public, but that does not establish what caused any particular person’s outage.
Why can internet access work while LAN discovery fails?
Internet access and local network discovery are different functions. A PC may browse websites normally while Windows sharing or discovery behaves differently on the local network. Windows uses network profiles to determine which firewall rules apply. Public is intended for less-trusted networks; Private is intended for networks you trust. In managed environments, Windows also has a Domain profile.
Microsoft notes that after a network reset, known connections might be set to Public, which makes the PC undiscoverable to other PCs and devices on that network. That makes the profile worth checking when the symptom is local discovery or file and printer sharing. It does not mean every LAN failure is caused by the profile, or that this setting was necessarily responsible for the incident implied by this article’s title.

Use Private only when you trust the network, such as your secured home network. Keep Public selected on networks you do not trust, including public Wi-Fi. Microsoft’s documented route is through Network & internet settings; exact labels can differ by Windows release.
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
For Ethernet
- Open Settings > Network & internet > Ethernet.
- Select the connected Ethernet network or its properties.
- Under Network profile type, choose Private for a trusted network.
For Wi-Fi
- Open Settings > Network & internet and select the connected Wi-Fi network.
- Open its properties and find Network profile type.
- Choose Private only if it is a network you trust.
If your Settings screen differs, check which Windows version you are using and follow the profile controls for that release. The choice changes how Windows treats the network; it does not repair a damaged cable, router, or other network fault.
What do Public and Private profiles change?
| Profile | When it fits | Local discovery |
|---|---|---|
| Public | A network you do not trust, such as public Wi-Fi. | Windows treats the network as less trusted and makes the PC less discoverable to other devices. |
| Private | A network you trust, such as your home network. | Allows the PC to be discoverable when the relevant sharing and firewall rules permit it. |
| Domain | A managed network where a domain profile applies. | Profile behavior is managed for that environment; do not substitute a home-network setting without consulting your administrator. |
A Private profile does not automatically make every shared folder or device available. The relevant Windows feature and firewall rules still matter, and other devices must also be configured to share or respond.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
What should I check before changing hardware?
First identify what is failing: internet access, reaching a router or shared resource, or seeing another device on the LAN. Then work through the narrow checks before making a broad change.
- Check the physical connection. If using Ethernet, confirm the cable is seated at both ends and connected to a router LAN port, not the Internet port used for the modem connection.
- Check the Windows profile. If the problem is local discovery on a trusted home network, confirm whether the active connection is marked Public or Private.
- Check the relevant firewall rule. If one app or sharing feature is still blocked, inspect whether its rule applies to the active profile. Microsoft recommends against disabling Windows Firewall: doing so removes protections including IPsec connection security rules, network protection from attacks that employ network fingerprinting, Windows Service Hardening, and boot-time filters. See Microsoft Learn’s Windows Firewall overview.
- Reserve Network reset for broader troubleshooting. It removes installed network adapters and their settings, then reinstalls the adapters with defaults after restart. You might need to reinstall or reconfigure VPN software or Hyper-V virtual switches, and known connections might end up with a Public profile. Microsoft describes the reset and its side effects in its Ethernet connection troubleshooting guidance.
When is Network reset appropriate?
Network reset is a wider repair than changing a profile: it removes adapter configuration and restores defaults after a restart. Consider it only after checking the cable or connection, the current profile, and applicable firewall rules. Before proceeding, note that VPN clients or virtual-switch software may need attention afterward; check the instructions for software you rely on.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
If the original symptom is simply that other devices cannot discover the PC, changing the profile on a trusted network is a narrower step than resetting all network adapters. If the PC has no internet connection at all, do not assume that switching to Private will fix it; diagnose the internet connection separately.
