The title’s takeaway is that a forecast-based model lost to Kalshi’s temperature markets. But the underlying post’s full text and data could not be verified, so its sample period, model, market series, results, and treatment of fees are unknown. The conclusion can be reported as the author’s stated finding—not as a reproducible result or proof that weather markets always beat forecasts.
What the backtest’s headline does—and does not—establish
An indexed record identifies a DEV Community post by myfirstcodeo and describes an approach that compares a city’s National Weather Service (NWS) forecast high with Kalshi temperature markets. The accessible material does not establish the model specification, dates, number of trades, baseline, market data, or numerical results. The author’s conclusion, “The market won,” is therefore the extent of what can be stated about the post’s finding from the available record. The DEV Community index and an indexed snippet do not provide the missing test details.
That distinction matters: a forecast may be meteorologically accurate yet fail to produce a profitable trade. A strategy also has to predict the contract’s actual settlement outcome, enter at a price that leaves room for profit, and account for fees and execution. Without those details, the headline is not enough to tell whether the model had a genuine disadvantage, whether the market price was hard to beat, or whether the test’s assumptions drove the result.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhy a forecast advantage may not become a trading edge
Accuracy is not the same as value
A forecast that improves on a weather baseline does not automatically identify a mispriced contract. A market price already represents an implied assessment of the event, so a strategy needs to estimate the outcome well enough to overcome the price it can actually trade at—not merely produce a plausible forecast.

The contract must match the forecast
Temperature markets settle according to contract-specific rules. A forecast for a city is not necessarily a forecast for the station, observation window, or definition used to settle the market. A comparable, separate strategy post describes using LaGuardia data for a New York market and notes discussion about a possible station mismatch. That is a warning about alignment, not evidence that the titled post used the same station or had the same problem. The comparable post and discussion should not be mistaken for the original article’s data.
Trading costs and fills change the outcome
A backtest can show hypothetical profit if it assumes trades execute at favorable prices or ignores fees, slippage, liquidity, and delays. A simulated fill is not proof that a trader could have placed and filled the same order in a live market. The titled post’s treatment of these factors is not established by its accessible record.

| Reddit strategy post, author-reported in 2026 | In a 30-day backtest of 500 New York high-temperature strategies, the author reported that 70 finished positive and median ROI was -41.61%. | The author describes a single city, series, station, and test window, with modeled fills. The discussion raises a possible settlement-station mismatch. These figures do not describe the titled article. Source |
| Rodrigo’s Medium study, publication date not stated in the accessible page | The author reports analyzing 67 days of Kalshi data and finding markets tracked an already-observed daily maximum closely in that sample; the author also discusses separate candidate signals. | The author says the work used a single spring sample and that live fill rates and other weather regimes needed validation. It is not independent verification, a universal finding about market efficiency, or evidence about the titled post. Source |
These examples illustrate why backtest results need their conditions attached. They do not settle whether a particular forecast model can beat a particular market at a particular time.

What a reader needs to judge whether the result is reproducible
A useful account of a forecast-versus-market test should make its inputs and trading assumptions inspectable. For the titled post, the accessible record does not establish the following:
- Market and weather data: the city and settlement station, contract series, date range, settlement definition, observation window, and source for the observed temperature.
- Forecast timing: the NWS forecast vintage used for each decision and when that forecast became available relative to the market price and trade.
- Model and comparison: the model specification, number of markets or trades, a simple forecast or climatology baseline, the market price available at entry, and a no-trade baseline.
- Execution and costs: the historical fees applied, assumed fill prices, liquidity, slippage, and any latency or order constraints.
- Evaluation design: whether parameters were fixed before a held-out period or forward test, rather than selected and judged on the same sample.
Those details separate a forecast comparison from a trading-strategy test. To assess tradable performance, the model must be evaluated against prices available when an order could actually be placed, with the applicable fees and plausible fills. To assess whether the strategy might generalize, the choices should be fixed before evaluating a distinct period. The available information does not establish whether the titled post met these tests.

Does the result mean a Kalshi weather bot cannot keep profiting?
No such categorical conclusion follows. The original post’s detailed evidence is unavailable, and separate backtests cover different strategies and conditions. A historical result—positive or negative—also cannot establish that a strategy will continue to perform in live markets. The author of the comparable Reddit post puts the caution plainly: “Past performance, including backtested performance, does not predict future results.” That quotation belongs to the Reddit post’s author, not to myfirstcodeo or Kalshi.

For now, the defensible reading of “The market won” is narrow: it is the titled post’s stated conclusion, while the accessible record does not supply enough information to reproduce or independently evaluate the comparison. It is not proof that a forecast model can never find an edge, or that one will.
