A side project can feel dead because you have stopped working on it. That does not tell you whether anyone still uses it, whether it needs maintenance, or whether bringing it back is worth your time. A useful audit separates those questions, checks the evidence available, and ends with a deliberate choice: revive, maintain, refocus, archive, or sunset.

What “dead” means—and what it doesn’t

For a personal project, “dead” often describes the creator’s relationship with it: no recent commits, no new features, or no desire to open the code. It is not proof that the project has no users. Conversely, a few visits, clones, or old forks do not automatically justify restarting work.

Keep three questions distinct:

  • Is anyone using or seeking it? Look for current activity and evidence of a continuing need.
  • Does it need attention? A stable project may need few changes, while software that remains in use may still carry maintenance or security responsibilities.
  • Do I want to own it? User demand matters, but so do the time and interest you can realistically give it.

The available guidance chiefly concerns open-source repositories. It does not establish how to measure use for every kind of side project, such as a private app, newsletter, or small business.

How to audit an old project

1. Check discovery and recent repository traffic

If the project is hosted on GitHub and its repository is eligible for traffic data, open the repository’s Insights tab and review traffic. GitHub’s traffic view includes full clones (not fetches), visitors over the previous 14 days, referring sites, and popular content. The 14-day visitor window is a recent signal, not a record of long-term demand; traffic availability also depends on plan and repository visibility. See GitHub’s guide to viewing repository traffic and its overview of repository activity and data.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Use these numbers as clues. A visitor count does not identify a person’s purpose, and a clone count is not a count of active users. Referrers and popular files can help explain what people are finding, but the traffic view is only one part of the audit.

2. Look beyond commits

Review issues, pull requests, forks, and whether those forks continue to change. For projects distributed through package managers, look for package-usage data where it is available. CHAOSS identifies these kinds of signals as relevant to project use, contribution, and maintenance in its Practitioner Guide to Sunsetting an Open Source Project.

Read activity in context. An unresolved issue may indicate a current need—or an old report with no continuing relevance. A fork can be an experiment, a dependency, or an abandoned copy. A quiet commit history alone cannot establish that nobody depends on the project.

3. Allow for a stable project

Not every useful project needs frequent updates. CHAOSS notes that some projects require little work once they are stable. Separate “I haven’t worked on this lately” from “nobody uses this” and from “this has no maintenance obligation.” If people rely on the project, even a stable codebase may need occasional attention or a clear plan for what happens when a problem is reported.

4. Reconstruct the human context

For a team project, CHAOSS recommends talking with people involved and reviewing recent contributors’ work to understand why activity stopped. For a personal audit, ask yourself a related but different set of questions: What made me stop? Do I still want responsibility for this? What would make continuing worthwhile? These are personal decision prompts, not a CHAOSS-prescribed test.

Choose a next state, not just “alive” or “dead”

GitHub’s 2023 announcement of its Stale Repos Action describes using a configurable inactivity period to surface repositories for decisions about archiving, reviving, or refocusing. That is a way to prompt review, not a universal rule for when a project is dead. The sources do not establish a single inactivity threshold or scoring formula for making the call. See GitHub’s announcement.

For each project, compare the same four practical axes. This framework synthesizes guidance on usage, maintenance, and response options; it is not a published scoring standard.

Axis Questions to ask
Evidence of use or need What recent traffic, issues, contributions, forks, package usage, or direct user feedback points to continuing interest?
Maintenance and security burden What responsibility comes with leaving the project available, and what would it take to keep it safe and usable?
Smallest feasible next step Could a focused fix, clearer project page, or question to identifiable users test whether there is still a need? What would that cost?
Your interest Do you want to work on it now, and are you willing to own its upkeep?

Use one consistent evidence window and the same questions when comparing several projects. GitHub’s 14-day traffic figure can help show recent activity, but it is not a durable measure of demand. Public repository signals also cannot capture every way someone might use a project.

Revive, maintain, refocus, archive, or sunset

  • Revive when there is a credible need, a manageable first step, and enough interest to take it on. Start with a bounded change rather than an open-ended promise.
  • Keep it stable with limited maintenance when the project appears useful as it is and does not call for a new feature cycle. Set realistic expectations about what you will maintain.
  • Refocus when the original direction no longer fits but a narrower purpose still makes sense. Explain what has changed so users know what to expect.
  • Archive when you want the record to remain available but do not plan to continue active development. Make the project’s status clear.
  • Sunset when continued availability or support is no longer appropriate. Where possible, give users notice and time to migrate, as CHAOSS advises.

Popularity is not the only valid reason to keep a project going. GitHub’s Open Source Guide notes that maintainers may value showing their work, transparency, or enjoyment, and that popularity is not everything: Open Source Metrics.

What the audit can—and cannot—tell you

Repository signals can help answer “Is anyone still using this?” when the project is public and the relevant data is available. They cannot turn a short traffic window into a complete history, prove why someone visited, or measure every form of use. The evidence reviewed here also does not establish a general revival success rate for dormant personal projects, so there is no defensible percentage to apply to your own decision.

The goal is not to make every old project active again. It is to replace an assumption with evidence where evidence exists, recognize where the signals are incomplete, and choose a status you can explain to yourself—and, if others depend on the work, to them.
