Browserless is the closest Hyperbrowser alternative for teams that already use Puppeteer or Playwright. Browserbase is a strong choice for hosted Playwright sessions and AI-agent workflows, Bright Data fits proxy- and web-data-heavy systems, and self-hosted Playwright gives you the most infrastructure control. The right option depends on your automation interface, session needs, anti-bot requirements, deployment model, observability, and billing meter.

What Hyperbrowser does

Hyperbrowser presents itself as “AI’s gateway to the live web”: a browser-as-a-service platform for AI agents and development teams. It runs isolated headless browsers and offers Python and Node.js SDKs for scraping, form filling, interface interactions, and data extraction.

Its listed capabilities include stealth features, CAPTCHA solving, proxy rotation, session management, logging, debugging, and high-concurrency operation. Those capabilities make it broader than a simple screenshot endpoint. Most alternatives below are likewise managed browser infrastructure rather than physical browser devices.

Best Hyperbrowser alternatives at a glance

Alternative Best fit Core interfaces or strengths Main trade-off
Browserless Teams moving existing browser code to managed infrastructure Puppeteer and Playwright over WebSocket; REST and GraphQL APIs; scraping, screenshots, PDFs; cloud or Docker self-hosting You still own application-level automation logic and must choose the right deployment and anti-bot configuration
Browserbase Hosted Playwright sessions and agent-oriented business automation Playwright for TypeScript/JavaScript, Python, and Java; Stagehand; model gateway; browser sessions Usage and limits require validation against the current plan and billing model
Bright Data Architectures where proxy geography and wider web-data services are central Proxy and web-data infrastructure alongside browser-oriented products It is not necessarily a one-to-one drop-in browser API
Self-hosted Playwright Organizations requiring maximum control Your own browser processes, network, storage, scaling, patching, and observability You take responsibility for operations, reliability, anti-bot strategy, and upgrades

Browserless: the closest API-oriented substitute

Browserless describes its service as managed headless browsers for automation. You can connect Puppeteer or Playwright over WebSocket, or use REST and GraphQL APIs for scraping, screenshots, and PDFs. It is available as a managed cloud service and as a Docker deployment.

Why choose Browserless

  • Existing code can stay familiar: Puppeteer and Playwright clients connect to a remote browser instead of requiring a rewrite around a proprietary SDK.
  • Multiple access styles: WebSocket browser connections suit full workflows, while REST or GraphQL can simplify discrete scraping, screenshot, or PDF jobs.
  • Deployment flexibility: You can use the vendor-managed service or run Browserless with Docker when private infrastructure is required.
  • Automation-focused features: Platform materials list stealth and CAPTCHA routes, browser sessions, AI-agent integrations, MCP, and enterprise self-hosting.

When Browserless is not the best fit

If your architecture is primarily a proxy and data-collection pipeline, Bright Data may fit better. If you want a higher-level agent workflow with hosted sessions and model access, Browserbase deserves a closer look. If you need total control over browser processes and network placement, operate Playwright yourself.

Browserbase: hosted Playwright for agents and business workflows

Browserbase’s pricing material describes hosted browser automation with full Playwright support for TypeScript/JavaScript, Python, and Java. It combines browser sessions with Stagehand and a model gateway, and lists uses such as data entry, system migrations, document extraction, and web scraping.

Planning capacity without overpromising

Browserbase states that a typical web scrape runs in under two minutes and that 100 hours is roughly 3,000 page-level tasks. These are vendor-provided planning figures, not an independent service-level guarantee. Validate current limits, session behavior, and billing before sizing a production workload.

When Browserbase makes sense

  • Your team wants Playwright but prefers the browser fleet, sessions, and operational layer to be managed.
  • Your workflow includes agent-style actions, document extraction, data entry, or multi-step business processes rather than one-off page fetches.
  • You want to evaluate Stagehand or a model gateway alongside hosted browser execution.

Bright Data: choose it for proxy and web-data architecture

Bright Data belongs on an alternatives list when proxy configuration, geographic access, and broader web-data infrastructure matter as much as browser control. It should be evaluated as a category fit rather than assumed to be an identical replacement for Hyperbrowser’s browser-as-a-service API.

Questions to answer before selecting it

  • Do you need a complete remote-browser session, or mainly proxy access and web-data services?
  • Which browser product, proxy type, geography, and authentication method match your target sites?
  • Where will session state, retries, browser actions, and extracted data live in your architecture?

Verify current Bright Data browser product names, plans, and limits for your region and use case before committing to an implementation.

Self-hosted Playwright: maximum control, maximum responsibility

Self-hosted Playwright is the control-first option. You own the browser processes, container images, network egress, proxy configuration, scaling policy, logs, replay tooling, patching schedule, and failure recovery. That can be essential for private-network access or strict data-residency requirements, but it removes the operational convenience of a managed browser fleet.

Minimal local setup

  1. Install a current Node.js release, create a project, and install Playwright: npm init -y followed by npm install playwright.
  2. Install the browser binaries with npx playwright install chromium.
  3. Create capture.js with the following script.
const { chromium } = require('playwright');

(async () => {
  const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: true });
  const page = await browser.newPage({
    viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 },
    deviceScaleFactor: 1
  });

  await page.goto('https://example.com', {
    waitUntil: 'networkidle',
    timeout: 60000
  });
  await page.screenshot({ path: 'example.png', fullPage: true });
  await browser.close();
})();
  1. Run node capture.js and confirm that example.png is created.
  2. For production, add bounded retries, structured logs, browser recycling, resource limits, queueing, and an explicit policy for authentication data and cookies.

Operational checklist

  • Pin browser and Playwright versions, then patch them on a scheduled cadence.
  • Limit concurrent contexts and pages so one workload cannot exhaust CPU or memory.
  • Record URL, navigation timing, HTTP failures, console errors, and a job identifier for each run.
  • Decide how to handle CAPTCHA, bot checks, rate limits, and proxy rotation; Playwright itself does not remove those operational decisions.
  • Keep authenticated storage state encrypted and short-lived where possible.

How to choose among the alternatives

Decision question Prefer Why
Do you already have Puppeteer or Playwright code? Browserless Remote browser connections preserve familiar automation interfaces.
Do you need hosted sessions plus agent-oriented tooling? Browserbase It combines hosted Playwright with Stagehand and a model gateway.
Are proxies, geography, and web-data services the center of the design? Bright Data Its fit is strongest when browser access is part of a broader data and proxy architecture.
Must browsers run inside infrastructure you control? Self-hosted Playwright You control deployment, networking, storage, and lifecycle.
Do you only need reliable website screenshots or PDFs? ScreenshotNeo It is a focused screenshot API with clean captures and billing that excludes failed results.

Compare the details that affect production

Automation compatibility

Check whether the service accepts Playwright, Puppeteer, Selenium, CDP, REST, GraphQL, or only a proprietary SDK. A familiar client reduces migration work, but a higher-level SDK may simplify agent tasks.

Session behavior

Clarify whether sessions are ephemeral or persistent, how authenticated profiles are stored, whether multi-step flows survive reconnects, and whether a human can take over a session.

Access and anti-bot handling

Ask specifically about CAPTCHA routes, fingerprint controls, proxy geography, and bot-mitigation behavior. Do not treat the presence of a browser API as proof that a target site will permit automation.

Agent integrations

Evaluate MCP, Stagehand, Browser Use, LangChain, model gateways, and any SDKs your team already operates. Integration quality matters more than a long feature list if agents must recover from UI changes.

Deployment and observability

Compare vendor-managed cloud, private cloud, VPC, on-premises, and Docker options. Require useful logs, replay or debugging tools, concurrency limits, startup and navigation timing, and a clear failure-recovery model.

What gets billed

Billing may be based on browser time, credits, requests, bandwidth, or successful results. Map that meter to your workload: a long authenticated session, a burst of short screenshots, and a failed navigation have very different cost profiles.

Performance, reliability, and cost notes

A Browserless-published comparison from 2026 reported Hyperbrowser connection time of 936.4 ms versus 692.5 ms for Browserless, while Browserless page creation was 482.3 ms versus 505.8 ms and navigation was 166.2 ms versus 251.1 ms. These are vendor benchmark figures, so treat them as directional evidence tied to that test’s methodology and date—not as an industry-wide guarantee. Run your own representative URLs, regions, authentication flows, and concurrency levels.

For reliability, measure successful result rate separately from transport success. Track blank pages, bot checks, CAPTCHA pages, timeouts, navigation errors, and downstream parsing failures. A service that connects quickly can still be unsuitable if your target sites reject its traffic.

For cost, estimate browser minutes or sessions, peak concurrency, proxy usage, storage, retries, and observability. Compare the complete operating cost of self-hosting—compute, patching, on-call time, and engineering effort—with the vendor’s usage meter.

Or skip the browser setup

If the job is a screenshot or PDF rather than an interactive browser workflow, ScreenshotNeo is the alternative to try first: it produces clean shots, bills only clean results, and has the lowest paid plan described here.

One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Before capture, ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.

Use the ScreenshotNeo documentation for the complete parameter reference. The same endpoint supports full-page captures with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element shots, dark mode, 12 device presets or custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper size/margins/landscape/page ranges, HTML or CSS rendering, custom JavaScript and CSS, pre-capture clicks, hidden selectors, selector/delay/network-idle waits, ad/tracker/request/resource blocking, custom headers/cookies/user agents/Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, configurable-TTL caching, signed public image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, an OpenAPI specification, and compatibility with parameter names used by other screenshot APIs.

Troubleshooting common failures

Playwright cannot connect or launch

For self-hosting, install the browser binaries, check container permissions, and confirm that the runtime has enough shared memory and file descriptors. For a managed service, verify the endpoint, credentials, browser type, and allowed network regions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pages are blank or incomplete

Wait for a meaningful selector or network idle instead of relying only on a fixed delay. Increase the navigation timeout for slow origins, load lazy content deliberately, and capture console and network errors before increasing concurrency.

Authentication disappears between steps

Use a persistent session or explicitly reuse the authenticated storage state supported by your provider. Confirm cookie domain, secure-cookie, and expiry behavior; do not place long-lived credentials in logs.

Requests receive bot checks or CAPTCHAs

Reduce request rate, use an allowed access method, and review proxy and fingerprint requirements. A managed browser product may offer stealth or CAPTCHA routes, but availability and permitted use depend on the provider and target site.

Costs are higher than expected

Inspect the provider’s billing meter, then separate browser time, retries, proxy traffic, storage, and failed jobs. Add caching where content can tolerate it and cap retries so one failing origin cannot consume the budget.

FAQ

Is Browserless better than Hyperbrowser?

Neither is universally better. Browserless is the stronger fit when remote Puppeteer or Playwright compatibility, REST/GraphQL access, or Docker self-hosting are priorities. Validate both against your target sites and concurrency pattern.

Which alternative supports Playwright?

Browserless supports Playwright over WebSocket, Browserbase offers full Playwright support for TypeScript/JavaScript, Python, and Java, and self-hosted Playwright gives you direct control of the runtime.

What should I use for AI browser agents?

Start with Browserbase if hosted sessions, Stagehand, and a model gateway match your workflow. Browserless is also relevant when your agents already use browser code and you want MCP or other integrations without changing the execution model.

Should I self-host Playwright?

Choose it when private networking, data residency, or infrastructure control outweighs the work of scaling, patching, monitoring, and handling anti-bot behavior yourself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is ScreenshotNeo a full Hyperbrowser replacement?

No. ScreenshotNeo is focused on screenshots and PDFs, with page information and MCP tools; it is not presented as a general-purpose interactive browser-agent platform. Use it when the required output is a clean capture rather than a long-lived browser session.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I compare browser vendors fairly?

Run the same authenticated and unauthenticated workflows at your target regions and concurrency, then compare successful outputs, failure classes, latency, and the provider’s actual billing meter.

Can one architecture combine these tools?

Yes. A team can use a managed browser platform for interactive sessions, self-host Playwright for private workflows, and a focused screenshot API for static capture jobs when the interfaces and security policies permit it.
