If a virtual machine starts after import but cannot connect to a network, first check that its virtual adapter is attached to the right Hyper-V virtual switch. Then verify the switch’s host network adapter and VLAN settings, followed by the adapter and IPv4 state inside the guest. These are diagnostic checks, not guaranteed fixes: the right path depends on the hypervisor, guest OS, and symptoms.
This guide covers Hyper-V on Windows 11. VirtualBox and VMware use different adapter and switch controls, so do not apply the Hyper-V steps to them unchanged. If the VM will not start at all, resolve the import or startup problem before troubleshooting its guest network.
1. Confirm which hypervisor and guest OS you are using
The title does not identify the virtualization platform. The steps below use Hyper-V Manager and Hyper-V networking controls on a Windows 11 host. If you imported the VM into another hypervisor, check that product’s virtual network settings instead. Also note whether the guest runs Windows or Linux: the guest-side controls differ.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Separate two symptoms before changing settings: a VM that will not start has an import, compatibility, or startup issue; a VM that starts but has no network access has a connectivity issue. For general Hyper-V import and compatibility guidance, see Microsoft’s Hyper-V import and export documentation.

2. Confirm the VM imported and is usable
In Hyper-V Manager, confirm the VM appears in the host’s list and can be started. Hyper-V supports different import types, including registering a VM in place, restoring it, and copying it; these options handle the VM files and identity differently. If the import did not complete or the VM cannot start, resolve that first rather than treating the symptom as a network adapter failure.
3. Check the host’s compatibility with the VM configuration
Hyper-V configuration versions affect which hosts can import and run a VM. Compatibility generally works from an older VM configuration on a newer Hyper-V host, not the reverse. If the VM is unavailable or fails during import or startup, check the configuration-version compatibility guidance before changing networking settings: Microsoft’s import documentation.
4. Attach the VM’s network adapter to the intended virtual switch
- In Hyper-V Manager, right-click the VM and select Settings.
- Under the VM’s hardware settings, select Network Adapter.
- Check the Virtual switch selection. Choose the switch that matches the network access the guest needs, then apply the change.
A virtual adapter can be present but disconnected from a useful network if no appropriate switch is selected. Microsoft explains Hyper-V switch types and their roles in its virtual-switch documentation.

5. Verify the external switch uses the right host network adapter
If the guest should join the same external network as the host, use an external virtual switch and confirm it is bound to the active, intended host network adapter. In Hyper-V Manager, open Virtual Switch Manager, select the external switch, and inspect the selected host adapter. A switch bound to an inactive or unintended NIC may leave the guest without the expected connection.
Creating or changing an external switch can disrupt connectivity on the host. Make the change only when you can tolerate a brief interruption, and choose the correct adapter. Microsoft describes switch setup and the external adapter selection in its Hyper-V virtual-switch guidance.
6. Check whether the host should share the external adapter
In the external switch settings in Virtual Switch Manager, review Allow management operating system to share this network adapter. This setting matters when the host OS is expected to use the same physical adapter as the VM switch. Its appropriate state depends on the network design; do not toggle it as a universal repair. See Microsoft’s explanation of Hyper-V switch options.

7. Check VLAN configuration on the VM and surrounding network
If the host network uses VLANs, confirm that the VM’s VLAN ID and the surrounding computer and network-device configuration agree. Incorrect tagging can isolate a VM even when its virtual adapter appears connected. In Hyper-V Manager, open the VM’s Settings, select its network adapter, and inspect the VLAN identification settings if VLANs are in use. Microsoft notes that VLAN identifiers need to be consistent across the computer, VM, and other network devices: Hyper-V virtual-switch documentation. Its troubleshooting guidance also lists VLAN configuration among possible networking factors: Microsoft’s Hyper-V network-adapter troubleshooting guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute8. Check that the guest adapter and IPv4 are enabled
Once the VM is running, check the network controls inside the guest OS. Confirm that its network adapter is visible and enabled, and that IPv4 is enabled for the connection if the network uses IPv4. A disabled adapter or unchecked IPv4 setting can prevent ordinary network access. Microsoft’s troubleshooting page covers these and other possible causes: Hyper-V virtual-machine network adapter troubleshooting.
If the guest does not see an adapter at all, or the adapter reports an error, investigate the guest’s driver and device status rather than repeatedly changing host switches. Microsoft identifies drivers and switch setup as possible causes, but the available guidance does not establish which one applies to a particular VM: Microsoft troubleshooting guidance.

9. Consider NAT when the guest only needs access through the host
If the VM needs access to network resources through the Windows host rather than appearing as a peer on the external network, Hyper-V NAT is an alternative. NAT uses an internal virtual switch; it is not the same as attaching the VM to an external switch. Microsoft’s Windows NAT instructions document a limit of one NAT network per host, so check that constraint before creating another: Set up a NAT network in Hyper-V.
Choose a switch based on the access the VM needs
| Option | Intended reachability | Physical host NIC binding | Host-side consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| External virtual switch | Connects VMs to an external network. | Bound to a selected host network adapter. | Creating or changing it may disrupt host connectivity. |
| Internal or private virtual switch | Provides narrower connectivity than an external switch; the exact reach depends on the switch type and configuration. | No external physical-NIC selection is made as for an external switch. | Choose the type according to whether host connectivity is needed; consult Microsoft’s switch documentation. |
| NAT using an internal switch | Lets a VM access network resources through the host. | Uses an internal switch rather than binding the VM switch directly to a physical NIC. | Microsoft documents a limit of one NAT network per host; see the Windows NAT guide. |
10. Use the migration-specific branch only when it matches your case
Windows 11 VM migrated from VMware will not start
This is a startup/security branch, not a general network-adapter fix. For the documented VMware-to-Hyper-V migration case, Microsoft’s Windows 11 procedure checks Secure Boot and TPM and specifies the Microsoft UEFI Certificate Authority Secure Boot template. Follow the migration procedure that matches your VM rather than changing these settings for an unrelated network failure: Microsoft’s VMware-to-Hyper-V migration guidance.

Microsoft’s Azure-specific documentation describes a MAC-address mismatch as a possible cause of unavailable networking for Linux guests in that environment. Its recovery steps are for the documented Azure scenario and should not be treated as generic desktop Windows instructions: Microsoft’s Azure Linux VM networking guidance. Do not change a MAC address by default when an imported VM has no IP; first check the switch attachment, VLAN, and guest adapter state.

If the guest still cannot get an IP address
Use the symptom to choose the next check: if the VM does not start, return to import and compatibility; if it starts but the adapter is disconnected, inspect its virtual-switch attachment; if it is connected but the guest has no IP, review the host NIC binding, VLAN, and guest adapter and IPv4 state. The documented causes are possibilities, not a diagnosis of your VM. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance is at Hyper-V virtual-machine network adapter troubleshooting.
For an external switch, Microsoft also documents PowerShell commands for creating a switch. Run PowerShell as administrator, replace the example names with the actual switch and adapter names, and use the command matching the intended switch type. These commands create a switch; they are not copy-paste fixes for every disconnected VM.
- External switch:
New-VMSwitch -Name "SwitchName" -NetAdapterName "AdapterName" - Internal or private switch:
New-VMSwitch -Name "SwitchName" -SwitchType InternalorNew-VMSwitch -Name "SwitchName" -SwitchType Private
See Microsoft’s virtual-switch instructions before creating or changing a switch, particularly if the host depends on the adapter being changed.
