AI can draft a financial model quickly; that does not establish that its assumptions, formulas, code, or outputs are reliable. Treat the result as a proposal that needs documented, risk-based human review before it informs a decision—and continue monitoring it if it is put into use.
What human validation means for an AI-generated financial model
Human-in-the-loop validation is more than asking someone to look over an AI-generated spreadsheet or approve a plausible-looking answer. A competent reviewer needs the evidence and authority to challenge the model, require changes, or stop its use. The review should leave a record of what was examined, what was corrected, what remains uncertain, and who authorized the intended use.
The review should be proportionate to the decision at stake. A model used for an exploratory estimate does not necessarily need the same controls as one that affects credit, capital, financial reporting, or risk management. The key is to define the use and consequences first, then choose review depth, expertise, testing, and approval accordingly.
Which guidance applies—and where it stops
Two different kinds of guidance can inform this work: U.S. banking supervisory guidance for certain traditional models, and NIST’s voluntary, cross-sector AI risk framework. Neither should be presented as a universal, prescribed checklist for validating a generative-AI-produced financial model.

| Source | Status and intended scope | Relevance to generative-AI-produced models |
|---|---|---|
| Federal Reserve, OCC, and FDIC revised model-risk guidance, issued April 17, 2026 | U.S. interagency supervisory guidance, tailored to an institution’s model-risk profile, size, and operational complexity. Federal Reserve SR 26-2 replaces SR 11-7 and SR 21-8; the Federal Reserve says it is expected to be most relevant to Federal Reserve-regulated banking organizations with more than $30 billion in assets. | The Federal Reserve-hosted text expressly says generative and agentic AI models are outside the guidance’s scope. It points organizations to their broader risk-management and governance practices when setting controls for excluded tools and processes. |
| NIST AI Risk Management Framework 1.0 | A voluntary, cross-sector framework, not banking regulation. NIST says the framework is being revised. | Offers lifecycle risk-management concepts that can inform AI governance, including planning, evaluation, deployment, and monitoring; it does not create a banking-specific validation mandate. |
| NIST Generative AI Profile, released July 26, 2024 | A companion resource to the AI RMF, focused on generative-AI risks and suggested actions. | Can help identify generative-AI-specific risks, but is not a replacement for law or banking supervisory guidance. |
The revised banking guidance defines a model as a complex quantitative method, system, or approach that applies statistical, economic, or financial theories to input data to produce quantitative estimates. It excludes simple arithmetic calculations, including those in spreadsheets, and deterministic rule-based processes without those theoretical underpinnings. So a spreadsheet is not automatically a regulated model; its complexity, theoretical basis, use, and risk matter. The guidance also says it is not prescriptive or enforceable by itself, although supervisory action may still follow violations of law or unsafe or unsound practices linked to insufficient model-risk management.

1. Define the decision and risk boundary
Write down the financial decision the output may support, the intended users, and the consequences if it is wrong. Specify whether the model is for exploration, internal analysis, or a decision with material financial or regulatory consequences. Use that assessment to set reviewer qualifications, independence, testing depth, approval authority, and any limits on use.
2. Preserve inputs, instructions, and assumptions
Keep the prompt or specification that produced the model alongside the source data and a record of any transformations. Check dates, units, definitions, and coverage: a dataset with annual figures, for example, should not silently feed a monthly calculation. Identify material assumptions and ask whether each has a defensible financial interpretation for the stated use. NIST’s AI RMF places data and assumption validation within planning and design testing, evaluation, verification, and validation (TEVV) work.

3. Inspect how the model is built
A reviewer should examine the actual formulas, code, and logic—not rely on an AI system’s explanation of them. Depending on the model, check for:
- Broken or unintended spreadsheet links, inconsistent formulas, and circular references.
- Unit, currency, period, or sign mismatches.
- Hard-coded values that should be inputs, and unsupported assumptions embedded in formulas or code.
- Logic that changes between versions without an explained and reviewed reason.
These are practical inspection examples derived from validation principles, not a list specifically prescribed by the revised interagency guidance for AI-generated spreadsheets. A reviewer should be able to trace important outputs back through the logic to their inputs.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
4. Test behavior, not just whether an answer looks reasonable
Where possible, compare the result with an independently built benchmark or a trusted prior method. Run base, downside, boundary, and stress scenarios relevant to the intended decision. Test sensitivities and expected economic relationships, then investigate material deviations rather than accepting them because the output appears plausible. The revised banking guidance describes validation in terms of reliability given assumptions, methods, data, and relevant theory; it also calls for monitoring and outcome analysis.
5. Record challenge, correction, and approval
Document who reviewed the work, what evidence they examined, the challenges raised, the changes made, unresolved uncertainties, and the person who approved the stated use. If a material issue remains, record the limitation and any compensating control—or do not approve the model for that use. NIST assigns governance and oversight to actors with organizational authority and identifies domain experts as contributors to design and interpretation.

6. Validate deployment and monitor operation
Before release, check that the implemented system behaves as reviewed: integrations, data flows, permissions, and outputs should match the approved design. After deployment, track errors, incidents, and outcomes, and set a review schedule appropriate to the model’s risk. Reassess after material changes to data, model logic, prompts, tools, or intended use. NIST’s lifecycle approach includes deployment validation and ongoing monitoring, with subject-matter experts contributing to recalibration when needed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What makes the human review meaningful
A person’s presence in the workflow is not proof of effective oversight. As a practical implementation standard, give the reviewer:
- Relevant competence: enough financial, quantitative, and technical knowledge to assess the model’s logic and intended use.
- Access to evidence: the inputs, assumptions, formulas or code, test results, and version history needed to reproduce or challenge material outputs.
- Authority to act: the ability to request correction, restrict use, escalate concerns, or stop approval.
- Accountability: a named responsibility for recording the review and its disposition.
These are sound ways to implement lifecycle oversight, not a formal human-in-the-loop test established by the cited sources for this exact use case. A nominal reviewer without evidence or authority can become a rubber stamp rather than a control.
How to apply this without overstating regulatory requirements
Start by identifying your jurisdiction, institution type, and whether the system is a traditional quantitative model, a generative or agentic AI system, or a workflow combining both. Then consider complexity, materiality, intended use, data provenance, reviewer independence and expertise, testing depth, documentation, escalation, and monitoring. In a combined workflow, assess the quantitative model and the AI tools or processes around it rather than assuming one label resolves the governance question.
The April 2026 interagency guidance is relevant to U.S. banking organizations within its supervisory context, but it expressly excludes generative and agentic AI models from its scope. NIST’s AI RMF and Generative AI Profile can inform voluntary, cross-sector risk practices; they do not turn that banking guidance into a generative-AI rule or replace applicable law. The Federal Reserve-hosted guidance notes that model risk can lead to financial loss, errors in financial statements and reporting, and flawed financial and risk-management decisions. Those are reasons to make review evidence-based and accountable, not reasons to claim a single universal regulatory checklist.
