Choose Hugging Face when you want a model-focused home with machine-learning metadata, discovery, downloads, and optional gated access. Choose GitHub when the model file is a supporting artifact for a code project, or when you need to distribute bounded, versioned files through repository storage or Releases. For large checkpoints, compare each file’s size with GitHub’s Git LFS limits and decide how users will actually download it. Many projects use both: code and collaboration on GitHub, model weights on Hugging Face.
How the platforms differ
Hugging Face and GitHub can both store model files, but their repositories serve different purposes. Hugging Face’s Model Hub gives model repositories machine-learning-specific attributes and workflows. GitHub is a general software-development platform whose repositories and releases can also distribute artifacts.
| Decision point | Hugging Face | GitHub |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | Model repositories where discovery, model metadata, and ML ecosystem integrations matter. | Source code, project documentation, collaboration, and artifacts associated with a software project. |
| Model discovery | Task and library metadata, model cards, integrations, and download metrics are documented for model repositories. | Tags, files, and release notes can describe an artifact; the reviewed GitHub documentation does not describe an equivalent model-specific catalogue. |
| Large files | Model files are stored in Xet-backed Git repositories, with Git and HTTP/download workflows documented. | Regular Git blocks individual files above 100 MiB; Git LFS supports larger files within plan-dependent limits. |
| Access | Optional gated repositories can require authenticated users to request access, with author approval available. | Repository visibility and permissions control access; the consulted documentation does not establish an equivalent per-user gated-model workflow. |
| Binary distribution | Hub downloads and supported client workflows provide model-oriented delivery. | Tagged GitHub Releases can package binary assets alongside release notes. |
When to host model weights on Hugging Face
Use Hugging Face when the repository should function as the model’s public landing page, not merely as a folder containing files. A model card and task or library metadata can help people understand what the model is and find it through the Hub. Hugging Face also documents integrations and download metrics for model repositories. See the Hugging Face Models documentation.
The Hub’s large-file workflow is designed for model repositories; its documentation describes Xet-backed Git repositories as well as download methods. Upload instructions are in Uploading models, and user-side options are in Downloading models.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use gated access when approval matters
Gating is useful when authors want users to authenticate and request access before downloading. Depending on the repository’s configuration, users may be asked to share identifying details, and the author can approve requests. This is different from simply making a repository private: gating provides an access-request workflow for users. See Hugging Face’s gated models documentation.
Check download reachability
Downloads may use storage or CDN hosts beyond the main Hugging Face website. If your intended users are on restricted networks, verify that those delivery hosts are reachable for them; access to the website alone does not establish that model files can be downloaded.

When GitHub is a sensible model host
GitHub can work when model artifacts are small enough for the selected storage method, and the project’s main needs are code review, issue tracking, documentation, and versioned software releases. A model file can live in a repository or be attached as a release asset, but those options have different limits and download behavior.
Repository files and regular Git
GitHub Docs, in documentation consulted on October 3, 2026, says regular Git warns when a file is larger than 50 MiB and blocks files larger than 100 MiB. Browser uploads are limited to 25 MiB per file; command-line regular Git can upload files up to 100 MiB. These are file-size limits, not recommendations for storing frequently updated checkpoints in Git history. Consult GitHub’s large-file guidance and file upload instructions.

GitHub’s repository-size guidance says to aim for under 1 GB and strongly recommends keeping repositories under 5 GB. That guidance is about repository size overall, not a per-model-file allowance.
Git LFS for larger files
Git Large File Storage (LFS) keeps pointer files in the Git repository and stores the actual file objects separately. GitHub’s documentation consulted on October 3, 2026, lists maximum LFS file sizes of 2 GB on Free and Pro, 4 GB on Team, and 5 GB on Enterprise Cloud. Check the current plan limits and account for any applicable storage or bandwidth quotas before adopting this workflow. Details are in GitHub’s Git LFS documentation.

Do not assume a source archive contains the model weights. GitHub archives include LFS pointer files by default, not the underlying LFS objects, unless an administrator enables those objects for archives. See GitHub’s documentation on LFS objects in repository archives.
GitHub Releases for versioned assets
A release can make a model artifact available alongside a tagged software version and release notes. GitHub Docs, consulted October 3, 2026, sets a maximum of under 2 GiB for each release asset and says releases have no total size or bandwidth usage limit. Each asset still needs to fit the per-file cap. See About releases.

Releases are often a better fit than committing binaries to regular Git when an artifact is a discrete download tied to a project version. They do not, however, create model-specific discovery or an individual approval workflow for downloading weights.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose a workflow based on the model and its users
- Measure the files. Check the size of every checkpoint and any tokenizer, configuration, or auxiliary files. For GitHub, determine whether each file fits regular Git, the applicable Git LFS plan cap, or the release-asset limit.
- Decide how people should find the model. If users need a model card, task/library metadata, Hub integrations, or model-oriented discovery, publish the model on Hugging Face. If users mainly arrive through a software project and need a versioned download, GitHub Releases may suffice.
- Set the access model. For public files, either platform may fit. If users must authenticate and request approval for model downloads, Hugging Face documents a gated-model workflow. GitHub repository permissions are not the same as that workflow.
- Test the exact download path. Confirm what an ordinary user receives from a repository checkout, a release asset, or a Hub download. For Git LFS, test archive behavior separately: pointer files are included by default unless archive inclusion of LFS objects is enabled.
- Use both when their roles differ. Keep code, issues, and project collaboration on GitHub while hosting weights on Hugging Face, then link the repositories to one another where useful.
Hosting a model is not serving it
Putting weights on Hugging Face or GitHub distributes files; it does not by itself run an inference endpoint or make the model available as a production service. Treat artifact hosting, model execution, and production serving as separate decisions.
Limits and figures at a glance
The figures below are service limits or repository guidance documented by GitHub, not performance comparisons. GitHub’s documentation was consulted on October 3, 2026; limits and plan terms can change, so check the linked pages before choosing a workflow.
Quick Recap
| GitHub storage or delivery method | Documented figure | What it applies to |
|---|---|---|
| Regular Git | Warning above 50 MiB; files above 100 MiB are blocked. | Individual files committed through regular Git. |
| Browser upload | 25 MiB per file. | Adding a file through the browser; command-line regular Git has a different cap. |
| Git LFS | 2 GB (Free and Pro); 4 GB (Team); 5 GB (Enterprise Cloud). | Maximum individual LFS file size by plan; check the current plan terms. |
| Release asset | Under 2 GiB per asset. | Maximum size for each uploaded release asset; the documentation states no total release size or bandwidth usage limit. |
| Repository-size guidance | Ideally under 1 GB; under 5 GB strongly recommended. | Overall repository size guidance, not a per-file limit. |
