If ping works but HTTPS doesn’t, that only tells you that an ICMP echo reached a responding address. It does not prove that the hostname resolves correctly, TCP port 443 is reachable, a proxy permits the request, TLS can negotiate, or the server returns a web response. Follow the request one layer at a time; the first failing step is the best clue to what actually broke.

What a successful ping does—and does not—tell you

Ping generally uses ICMP echo. A reply is evidence that an address responded to that ICMP request, but web browsing uses a different chain: the client resolves a hostname, opens a TCP connection to the HTTPS service, negotiates TLS, validates the certificate, and exchanges HTTP data. A successful ping does not test those later steps. Conversely, a failed ping is not proof that a website is down: a firewall may block ICMP while allowing HTTPS. Microsoft notes that ICMP must be allowed through a firewall for ping to work (Microsoft DNS client troubleshooting).

Use the exact hostname in the address bar as the target for diagnosis. Pinging an IP—especially one copied from somewhere else—does not establish that the requested hostname points to that address or that the server presents a certificate for that name.

Start by recording the failure

Before changing settings, note the full URL or hostname, the exact browser error or command output, when it occurred, and whether the problem affects one site or all HTTPS sites. Also record the device and operating system, browser or command-line client, network, VPN, and proxy state. These details make comparisons useful and help an administrator reproduce the problem.

Trace the HTTPS request in order

1. Confirm hostname resolution

Check spelling and resolve the exact hostname, including any subdomain. A site’s apex domain and a subdomain can have different DNS records, and DNS answers may differ between networks or resolvers. Record the answers and which resolver returned them before changing DNS settings. A typo or missing DNS record can cause a hostname to fail even when an IP address responds to ping; see Cloudflare’s DNS troubleshooting guidance.

If the hostname does not resolve, focus on the name, its DNS records, and the resolver path. If it resolves to an unexpected or different address on another network, that difference narrows the investigation but does not by itself identify the faulty component.

2. Test the actual HTTPS transaction

When available, run curl -v https://HOST/, replacing HOST with the target hostname. The verbose output helps show where the request stops: name resolution, connection, proxy handling, TLS negotiation or certificate verification, or an HTTP response. The curl manual documents its HTTPS and proxy behavior.

Interpret the stopping point rather than treating every error as “the site is down.” A DNS error is different from a connection timeout or refusal; either is different from a TLS or certificate error. An HTTP 4xx or 5xx means an HTTP response arrived, though the request may still have failed at the application or server level.

If curl reports that HTTPS is unsupported, check the client build before blaming the destination. Some curl builds lack SSL support; the curl FAQ describes this case. Availability and TLS backend can vary by installation, including on Windows.

3. Check TCP port 443 and the network path

If DNS succeeds but the connection to the HTTPS endpoint times out or is refused, the failure is before TLS. Possible areas to investigate include routing, firewall policy, and whether the service is listening on the expected endpoint. Ask the network administrator or hosting provider to check the relevant outbound and inbound rules; a ping reply does not establish TCP port 443 reachability.

A timeout, packet loss, reset, or other path symptom may warrant traceroute or MTR. Those tools help examine the route, but their results do not automatically identify which device or provider is responsible. Cloudflare includes path diagnostics among its troubleshooting information-gathering steps.

4. Check proxy and HTTPS inspection settings

A browser or command-line client may use a proxy that handles the request differently from a direct connection. Check the client’s configured proxy and whether the hostname should use an approved bypass rule. If a corporate proxy or security product inspects HTTPS traffic, involve the administrator rather than permanently disabling protection. curl also distinguishes verification of an HTTPS proxy from verification of the destination server (curl manual).

5. Investigate TLS and certificate validation

If the connection reaches TLS but fails during negotiation or validation, check whether the certificate is valid and covers the exact hostname, whether it has activated, whether the client trusts its certificate chain, and whether the client and server support compatible TLS settings. A certificate valid for a parent domain may not cover a multi-level subdomain.

Network interference, certificate problems, and protocol incompatibility can all produce SSL/TLS errors; the precise message matters. See Cloudflare’s SSL protocol error guidance and its general SSL error guidance. If curl cannot verify a certificate, consult its CA certificate documentation to understand trust configuration.

Do not use --insecure or turn off certificate checks as a repair. That bypasses an important check of server identity and trust rather than fixing the certificate or configuration. If TLS inspection may be involved, preserve the error and ask the responsible administrator to investigate.

6. Read the HTTP result

If TLS succeeds and curl or the browser receives an HTTP status, the request made it through the transport and encryption stages. A 4xx or 5xx response points toward the requested resource, access policy, or application/server behavior rather than the same failure as a TCP connection or TLS handshake error. Keep the status and any response details with your notes.

Choose a test that matches the question

Test What it checks What a failure can indicate What it cannot prove
Ping Whether an address responds to ICMP echo. The address may be unreachable, or ICMP may be filtered. Correct DNS for the requested hostname, TCP/443 access, proxy behavior, TLS, certificate trust, or an HTTP response.
DNS lookup Whether a resolver returns an answer for the hostname. A typo, missing or incorrect record, or resolver-specific issue. That the returned endpoint accepts HTTPS or serves the requested hostname correctly.
TCP connection test to port 443 Whether a TCP connection to the HTTPS endpoint can be established. Possible filtering, routing trouble, refusal, or an unavailable listener. Successful TLS negotiation, certificate validation, or an HTTP response.
curl -v https://HOST/ The HTTPS request stages and the client’s reported stopping point or response. The verbose error can help locate a DNS, connection, proxy, TLS, certificate, or HTTP-stage issue. One result alone does not establish the responsible network component or prove that every client follows the same path.
Browser developer tools Request-level behavior visible to the browser. A failed request or browser-reported network error can help narrow the failing stage. By itself, it may not identify the underlying cause or which intermediary is responsible.

Use these tests together. Each exercises a different part of the path, and one successful check does not certify the layers that follow it.

Compare another device or network carefully

If permitted, try the same URL from another device or approved network, keeping the hostname and request the same. If it works elsewhere, compare DNS answers, proxy and VPN settings, security software, and client trust configuration. The difference narrows the search to something that varies between the paths; it is not proof that any one network component is at fault. If it fails everywhere, the issue may be shared by the destination or a common service, but that comparison alone still does not identify the cause.
