Choose html-validate if you prefer named presets for standards, accessibility, and full-document checks. Neither is a universal winner: compare the rules your templates need, the configuration your team will maintain, and how each tool behaves in your editor and CI.
How the two HTML linters differ
Both are developer tools that analyze HTML files; neither is a hosted service. Their main distinction is how you build a checking policy: HTMLHint centers on configurable hints, while html-validate offers presets as starting points for groups of rules.
| Decision point | HTMLHint | html-validate |
|---|---|---|
| Configuration | .htmlhintrc, CLI rule options, custom rule directories, and inline controls. Useful when you want to select or tune individual checks. HTMLHint configuration guide |
JSON or JavaScript configuration, named presets, and configurable rule severities and options. Useful when you want a preset as a coherent starting point. html-validate usage guide |
| Rule coverage | Its documented rules include tag pairing, obsolete tags, unique IDs, document metadata, image alternatives, and form-label checks. HTMLHint rule reference | Its reference groups checks across syntax, content models, security, SEO, style, and document concerns. Available presets include recommended, standard, a11y, and document. html-validate rule reference |
| Standards and accessibility | Review individual rules against your standards and accessibility policy; the rule list is not presented as a single standards-validation preset. | The standard preset is described as validating against the WHATWG HTML Living Standard. The a11y preset enables accessibility-related checks and is recommended alongside other presets for broader coverage. It does not by itself certify WCAG conformance. html-validate rule reference |
| Editor and automation | The CLI supports ignore patterns, output formats, and custom rule directories. A Microsoft VS Code extension reports findings for open HTML files. HTMLHint CLI guide · HTMLHint VS Code extension | The getting-started guide documents a CLI and project-level configuration. The reviewed documentation does not establish a complete editor or CI integration matrix. html-validate getting started |
| Runtime information | The official guide specifies Node.js 22 or later. Check that requirement against the package release and environment you plan to adopt. HTMLHint getting started | The reviewed getting-started material shows npm installation but does not state a comparable minimum Node.js version. Verify runtime compatibility for the release you select. html-validate getting started |
Which should your project use?
Pick HTMLHint for individual rule control
HTMLHint is a natural first choice if your project already uses .htmlhintrc, or if you want to enable and tune specific checks or add custom rules. Its CLI options and VS Code extension also suit teams that want a documented route from local file checks to editor feedback. Inspect the rules actually enabled in your configuration rather than assuming every useful check is on by default.
Pick html-validate for a preset-based policy
Start with html-validate if you want a named baseline and a clearer separation between standards, accessibility, and document-level checks. The presets provide an organizing model, but you still need to select the combination that fits your project. For style rules that overlap with Prettier, html-validate documents an html-validate:prettier preset intended to disable conflicting style rules; combine it with the validation presets you need. html-validate rule reference

Check whether your HTML is a full document or a fragment
Component templates and partials may not contain the elements expected in a complete HTML document. html-validate separates document-level rules into its document preset, so consider whether those checks belong on every template or only on full pages. With either tool, test rules against representative files before making them required.

html-validate
- Install it as a development dependency with
npm install --save-dev html-validate. The reviewed setup guide does not state a minimum Node.js version, so confirm compatibility for the package release you choose. html-validate getting started - Add project configuration extending
html-validate:recommended, then choose additional presets and rules that match your needs. html-validate getting started - Run a file with
npm exec html-validate yourfile.html. Add the command to your project’s local workflow or CI after checking its output on representative templates. html-validate getting started
How to compare them before standardizing
The tools overlap on concerns such as document structure and accessibility-related checks, but their references do not provide a rule-by-rule equivalence map or a comparative accuracy study. Treat a switch between them as a change in rule policy, not a drop-in replacement. HTMLHint rule reference · html-validate rule reference

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Choose representative full pages, component fragments, and templates with the markup patterns your project commonly uses.
- Enable the rules or presets you would actually enforce in each tool; do not compare only default output if your intended configurations differ.
- Review findings for useful catches, false positives, and checks your team considers essential.
- Run each CLI in the environment where checks will execute and assess whether its output is usable in your CI workflow.
- Check behavior in the editor developers use. HTMLHint documents a VS Code extension; verify current support for html-validate in your team’s chosen editor rather than assuming parity.
- Record the selected rules and exceptions so that future configuration changes remain an explicit project policy.
What the documentation does not establish
The project materials do not establish a head-to-head speed or accuracy winner, comparative maintenance burden, independent adoption figures, or a complete editor-integration comparison. They also do not show that the rule catalogs are interchangeable. Base the decision on the checks your project needs and the results you observe on your own templates.
