HTML/CSS to Image (HCTI) is a browser-backed API for rendering supplied HTML and CSS, public web pages, or template data as images and PDFs. It offers useful controls for dimensions, format, capture area, and timing, but its documentation does not establish pixel-perfect results or an independently measured quality ranking. Its stated speed, uptime history, and throughput policies should be read alongside monthly image allowances and plan terms.
What HTMLCSStoImage does
HCTI is designed for developers who need to turn markup or a webpage into a reusable visual asset. The API accepts either an HTML payload or a URL, not both, and CSS can be supplied optionally. Common uses include generating graphics from templates, taking webpage screenshots, and creating PDFs. The vendor says its service has been in production since 2018 and has generated “100M+ images”; those are vendor claims, not independently audited figures. HTML/CSS to Image overview
The distinction between rendering owned markup and capturing a live page matters: your output depends on the markup, viewport, fonts, JavaScript, external resources, and timing. A successful API response alone does not establish that every expected word or asset appeared correctly.
How good are the screenshots?
There is no single quality score that can be responsibly assigned from the available evidence. HCTI documents controls that let you shape output, but there is no verified controlled comparison establishing how its screenshots look relative to other APIs. Treat the following settings as ways to configure a capture, then validate representative outputs from your own workload.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Dimensions and sharpness
The FAQ says output defaults to 2× viewport dimensions. Set device_scale: 1 if you want output at 1×; the API documentation says a larger device scale increases image quality and file size. Choose viewport width and height to match the layout you actually need, since responsive pages can rearrange at different widths. The API also documents mobile, touch, and landscape emulation. API documentation FAQ
Page readiness and dynamic content
JavaScript-heavy pages and pages that load external resources may take longer to render. HCTI exposes timing controls, including a delay and render_when_ready; use them when the page needs time to populate, and make sure required fonts, scripts, and images are accessible. The documentation describes these controls, but does not independently establish their effectiveness for every site.
Capture area, format, and background
- Use full-page capture for content extending below the initial viewport, or selector cropping when you only need a particular element.
- Supported formats include PNG, JPG, WebP, and PDF. Choose based on the asset’s intended use and whether transparency is needed.
- For a transparent output, the FAQ recommends PNG with
transparent_background: true. If using CSS to set transparency, it says to use thecssparameter. - Cookie banners can obscure a page; the official FAQ notes URL screenshot handling options. Check the relevant documentation and verify the resulting image rather than assuming a banner will be removed.
Before relying on a production workflow, run a small pilot with your own fonts, dynamic content, target viewport, external assets, and any authentication the target page requires. Check the actual output for missing text, late-loading images, unexpected layout changes, and unwanted overlays.

Is the API reliable and fast?
HCTI’s FAQ says: “Simple images render in as little as 300ms. Most images complete in 1-3 seconds. Complex pages with many external resources or JavaScript may take longer.” These are vendor-stated timings, not independent benchmark results; a representative workload may take longer. HCTI FAQ
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe vendor status-history page reported API uptime of 100% in May 2026, 100% in June 2026, and 99.99% in July 2026. That is a short historical record for the API component, not a guarantee of future availability or proof of long-term reliability. The pricing page advertises a 99.95% uptime SLA for Enterprise plans; do not assume that applies to other plans. Status history Pricing
Is there a rate limit?
HCTI says image generation has no per-second or per-minute rate limit and no queue or concurrency limit. The vendor’s wording is: “No. The API is built to support enterprise level volume. We have no queues or concurrency limits.” This describes image-generation throughput, not an unlimited monthly entitlement: plans have image allowances, and the API can return HTTP 429 after you exhaust yours. Management API operations have separate rate limits, so the image-generation policy should not be generalized to every endpoint. Pricing FAQ API documentation

What happens when you hit the image limit?
The API documentation lists HTTP 429 when the plan’s image allowance has been exceeded. Its example response explains image-credit usage and points to upgrading. Optional overages are not automatically enabled, so check the account’s plan and overage settings rather than assuming additional renders will be charged automatically. API documentation

Common API errors and what to check
| HTTP status | Documented cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| 400 | Invalid or missing required content | Send either html or url, not both; make sure the required value is present and valid. |
| 401 | Missing or invalid credentials | Check that the request includes valid API credentials. |
| 403 | Insufficient permissions | Confirm the credentials are authorized for the requested operation. |
| 429 | Plan image allowance exceeded | Check usage and plan allowance, then decide whether to wait for the next allowance period, upgrade, or enable an available overage option. |
These are documented response classes, not an exhaustive diagnosis for every failed render. When a request succeeds but the image looks wrong, inspect the output and check the target URL, viewport, page readiness, external resources, selector, and transparency settings. API documentation

The right choice depends on whether you control the markup, need a live URL capture, want a visual editor, or require video or workflow features beyond an image/PDF API. A comparison published by PropzAPI, a direct competitor, characterizes HCTI as code-first and distinguishes visual-editor tools such as Bannerbear and Placid from live-URL screenshot services such as ScreenshotOne. That is one competitor’s framing, not neutral consensus. PropzAPI comparison
For developers evaluating live-URL screenshot services, ScreenshotNeo is an alternative to try first: it removes consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, and only clean shots are billed. ScreenshotNeo is a separate product, not a finding about HCTI’s quality or service behavior.

- Consider whether non-developers need a visual editor, or whether a code-first API is the better fit.
- Check batch generation, template versioning, storage, proxy routing, and enterprise support against your workflow requirements.
- If your process must verify that exact text reached the final output, plan a separate output-validation step; a successful render response is not evidence of semantic correctness.
