If an HTMLCSStoImage screenshot request seems to time out, first separate a slow page render from an error returned to your client or a 429 usage limit. Record the endpoint, elapsed time, HTTP status, response body, and whether the response includes an image URL or ID. HTML/CSS to Image’s documentation does not establish a universal server-side timeout duration, so a long request alone does not identify the cause.

What makes a slow page take longer to capture?

HTML/CSS to Image says its renderer waits for the page’s load event, then monitors additional network activity, including external CSS and images. A page that continues loading resources can therefore take longer to reach capture than a simple static page. Content injected asynchronously by JavaScript can also appear later than the initial page load. HTML/CSS to Image’s debugging guide describes this readiness behavior.

The vendor’s FAQ says simple images can render in as little as 300 ms, most renders take 1–3 seconds, and complex pages may take longer. Those are general vendor observations, not a timing guarantee or an independently measured benchmark. HTML/CSS to Image FAQ

Choose the right render-wait control

Control Use it when Trade-off
ms_delay You know the page needs a fixed extra pause, for example for JavaScript or an animation. Easy to set, but a fixed delay can waste time or still be too short.
max_wait_ms You need to cap how long the renderer waits before capture. It prevents an open-ended wait but may capture before important content loads. The documented range is 500–10,000 ms.
render_when_ready with ScreenshotReady() Your application knows when the content that must appear in the screenshot is ready. Provides an application-specific signal, but your page JavaScript must call it at the right time.

These controls address rendering readiness; the documentation does not say that they change a separate client HTTP timeout or a general server-side request deadline. See the vendor’s API documentation and debugging guide.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Add a fixed delay for known late content

Use ms_delay when you know the page needs a short pause after load. HTML/CSS to Image’s documentation suggests starting at 500 ms when waiting for JavaScript, then increasing as needed. Check the resulting image rather than assuming that a delay guarantees the content is ready.

Signal readiness from the page

If your application can identify the exact moment required content is ready, set render_when_ready: true and call ScreenshotReady() from the page’s JavaScript at that point. This avoids guessing a delay, but only works as intended if the signal follows completion of the content you need in the image. The vendor documents this approach in its debugging guide.

Set a maximum wait when you need a cap

max_wait_ms sets the maximum time the renderer waits before taking the screenshot. Its documented range is 500 to 10,000 milliseconds; do not set it above 10,000. You can combine it with ms_delay, but the maximum takes precedence. If the cap is reached while important content is still loading, the image may be incomplete. Test candidate values against representative pages and inspect the output. HTML/CSS to Image API documentation (page modified July 16, 2026)

Reduce unnecessary page work carefully

If only one region matters, use the documented selector option to target an element for capture. URL rendering also supports request_overrides to block matched requests; HTML/CSS to Image marks this feature as requiring a paid plan. Blocking irrelevant requests may reduce waiting, but do not block CSS, images, scripts, or other resources needed to render the selected content. Verify the resulting image after changing either option. HTML/CSS to Image API documentation

Diagnose a 429 separately from a slow render

A 429 is not proof that the page rendered too slowly. HTML/CSS to Image documents two distinct limit paths:

  • Image creation: Rendering uses the image credits included with the plan. The FAQ says image creation has no per-second or per-minute request limit, but an exhausted plan allowance can return a 429 with a plan-limit message.
  • Management API operations: Resource read and write operations have separate per-minute throttles. The current rate-limits documentation lists 100 read requests and 20 write requests per minute for management resource groups, per organization and operation group. These limits do not apply to image creation.

Read the response message and headers before retrying. A management-throttle response may identify its operation group and include Retry-After; follow that value when present. If it is absent, the provider says to wait 60 seconds for a management throttle. Waiting does not replenish image credits if the rendering allowance is exhausted. FAQ · API rate limits

Reproduce and narrow down the problem

  1. Capture the request details. Save the endpoint, caller-measured duration, HTTP status, response body, and whether an image URL or ID was returned. A long caller wait is not, by itself, evidence of a particular server timeout.
  2. Check whether the intended content is actually late. Determine whether it arrives at page load, after a known delay, or only after an application-specific event. Look for slow external resources or asynchronous content that remains unfinished.
  3. Change one readiness setting at a time. Try a modest ms_delay, an application readiness signal, or a tested max_wait_ms cap. Compare the screenshot for missing content as well as request duration.
  4. Test optional reductions in page work. Try a selector or, if your plan supports it, request overrides. Confirm that the image still contains all resources required by the chosen region.
  5. If the response is 429, identify the limit path. Check the body and relevant headers, then compare image-credit usage or management operations with the corresponding limits. Do not blindly repeat a request that has exhausted image credits.
  6. Escalate with evidence if the response remains unexplained. Provide the endpoint, timing, status, response body, relevant response headers, and a reproducible target page. Avoid sharing API credentials.

Or skip the browser setup
