HTML5 video is the broad label for native video features associated with modern HTML; HTML video most precisely refers to the standard <video> element. In everyday web development, people often use the terms interchangeably. The element is the specific feature that embeds a browser-playable media player.
What does HTML video mean?
The WHATWG HTML Standard describes a <video> element as a way to play videos or movies, including audio files with captions. MDN describes it as an element that embeds a media player supporting video playback in a document. The element can provide native controls, select among media sources, display a poster image, accept loading hints, and expose playback behavior to JavaScript.
“HTML5 video” is a wider, less precise term. It refers to the native web-video approach that became associated with HTML5, rather than to a separate element or playback technology. Today, a page using the HTML <video> element is commonly described as using HTML5 video.
How to add video with the HTML <video> element
A basic implementation can offer more than one encoded file, captions, a poster image, native controls, and fallback text:

<a href="movie.mp4">Download the video</a>.
</video>
The browser checks the listed <source> alternatives and uses a format it can play. Multiple sources can improve compatibility because support depends on both the browser and the media’s codec and container; the fact that browsers support <video> does not mean every browser plays every file format.
The fallback text and download link are for browsers that cannot use the element. The HTML Standard explicitly says this fallback content is not intended to address accessibility concerns.

HTML5 video and HTML video compared
| Question | HTML5 video | HTML video |
|---|---|---|
| What does the term mean? | A broad label for native web video capabilities associated with modern HTML. | Most precisely, the standard <video> element. |
| Is it a separate playback feature? | No. In common usage, it usually describes video implemented with the HTML element. | Yes: it names the concrete element used in markup. |
| What should a developer write? | Use the term when discussing the overall native-web approach. | Use <video> in markup and when discussing the element’s attributes, sources, tracks, or scripting. |
Will HTML video work in every browser?
Support for the <video> element is broad. MDN lists it as available across browsers since July 2015. That does not establish universal support for all codecs, containers, devices, or delivery methods. Choose encodings for the browsers and devices your audience uses, and provide alternate sources when needed.
The WHATWG developer edition lists support history for Firefox 3.5+, Safari 3.1+, Chrome 3+, Edge 79+, and Internet Explorer 9+. Those are historical minimum versions, not a current recommendation or a guarantee that a specific video encoding works in each browser.

Native controls, custom players, and delivery
The HTML <video> element supports native browser playback and controls. A site can instead build a custom JavaScript interface around the element, but that adds implementation and maintenance work. The right choice depends on whether native controls meet the design and usability needs, and on the accessibility of any custom controls.

For straightforward playback, the example above uses file sources. Adaptive streaming and DRM can require additional delivery and browser-specific decisions; the term “HTML5 video” alone does not specify those capabilities or guarantee support. Consider target-browser compatibility, required controls, accessibility, streaming needs, and maintenance together.

Autoplay is governed by browser policy and user preferences. Browsers commonly block autoplay when a video has audible audio; muted autoplay is more broadly permitted. Apple documents Safari as allowing autoplay by default only when a video has no audio track or the element is muted.

Best Value
autoplay is a Boolean attribute: if it is present, it is enabled. Writing autoplay="false" does not turn autoplay off. Omit the attribute when autoplay is not wanted. The preload attribute is only a hint, so browsers may choose how much media to load and when.
Make video accessible
Captions should accurately convey spoken dialogue and meaningful sounds. Add a transcript when a text alternative is useful, and consider audio description, a sign-language track, or WebVTT chapter information when relevant to the video and audience. A fallback message for browsers that cannot display video does not substitute for these accessibility features.
