HTML is text with markup instructions; plain text is characters without those HTML instructions. HTML can identify headings, paragraphs, links and other structure that a browser or mail client interprets. Plain text carries the words themselves and relies on line breaks, spacing and conventions for presentation. HTML source is therefore still text—the practical comparison is HTML-formatted content versus plain text.

HTML and plain text in one sentence

HTML (HyperText Markup Language) describes the structure and meaning of a document by placing tags around content. A browser, email client or other user agent reads those tags and decides how to present the result. Plain text contains characters only; it has no HTML elements telling software that a line is a heading, a link or a list.

That distinction does not make one format universally better. HTML is useful when structure, links or controlled presentation matter. Plain text is a dependable lowest-common-denominator representation for simple messages and systems that must work with minimal rendering support.

“Text” can mean three different things

Confusion starts because text is used broadly. It can mean any human-readable characters, the plain-text format used in email, or the visible words a browser displays after interpreting HTML. Keep these meanings separate:

  • HTML source: a text file containing tags, attributes and textual content, such as <h1>Heading</h1>.
  • Rendered HTML: the visual and interactive result produced when a user agent interprets that source.
  • Plain text: characters without HTML markup instructions. A URL may be written out, but it is not automatically a clickable link in every application.

Removing tags from HTML does not always produce a faithful plain-text version. Lists, tables, image meaning, link destinations and reading order may need deliberate conversion.

What HTML adds

Explicit document structure

Elements such as <h1>, <h2>, <p>, <ul> and <table> identify relationships between parts of a document. A browser can display that structure, a search tool can index it, and assistive technology can expose a navigable outline when the elements are used correctly.

Links and richer content

HTML commonly includes URI references to other documents and media. An anchor such as <a href='https://example.com'>Example</a> gives software both readable link text and a destination. Images, audio, video, forms and embedded content can also be represented, with appropriate alternatives and controls.

Presentation controlled by a user agent

HTML supplies structure; CSS normally supplies visual presentation, and JavaScript can add behavior. The same HTML can therefore be restyled for a phone, printed page or high-contrast mode. Presentation is not guaranteed to look identical in every browser or mail client, because each application supports different features and applies its own defaults.

What plain text does—and does not do

Plain text is intentionally small. It can contain words, numbers, punctuation, spaces and line breaks, but it does not carry HTML instructions for headings, fonts, colors or clickable controls. Authors can still create recognizable structure with short lines, labels, indentation and written URLs.

Email standards distinguish fixed-width text from “flowed” paragraphs that may be rewrapped by a receiving client. RFC 3676 documents these conventions and the interoperability problems that occur when one client assumes fixed lines while another treats them as reflowable prose. A paragraph that looks tidy in one application can acquire unexpected wrapping or quotation markers elsewhere.

Plain text is not automatically more accessible. It is easy for many programs to display, but it cannot by itself express the purpose of information shown only in an image, nor can it expose semantic heading levels. Meaning still depends on clear wording and a sensible reading order.

HTML versus plain text: practical comparison

Aspect HTML-formatted content Plain text
Structure Elements identify headings, paragraphs, lists, tables and other relationships. Structure is suggested with words, spacing and line conventions.
Links Anchors associate readable text with a destination and can be styled or activated. Links appear as written URLs; whether they become clickable depends on the application.
Presentation Browsers and clients interpret markup, usually together with CSS. No HTML presentation instructions; the receiving application chooses basic text display.
Media Can include images and other media, with text alternatives where needed. Cannot embed visual media; you must describe it or provide a separate URL.
Email behavior Rendering varies with client support, sanitization and security settings. Broadly supported, but fixed-versus-flowed wrapping can change appearance.
Best fit Web documents, structured reports and messages needing links or richer layout. Simple notices, fallback parts and situations prioritizing minimal rendering assumptions.

HTML source is not the same as the page you see

Consider this source:

<h1>Release notes</h1>
<p>Version 4 adds a search filter.</p>
<p><a href='https://example.com/docs'>Read the documentation</a></p>

The characters in the code are text. The browser interprets the tags and presents a large heading, a paragraph and a link. “Rendered HTML” refers to that interpreted result, not to a separate non-text substance. If a script changes the document after loading, the final page can differ from the original file returned by the server.

Which format should you choose for email?

Choose HTML when structure or interaction matters

  • You need headings, columns, lists, buttons or branded layout.
  • Readers benefit from descriptive link text instead of long URLs.
  • You can test the message in the mail clients your audience uses.
  • Meaningful images have useful text alternatives, and decorative images are treated as decorative.

Choose plain text when simplicity is the requirement

  • The message is a short alert, receipt, password code or operational notice.
  • Compatibility with text-only clients, terminals or strict filters is more important than layout.
  • You do not control how the recipient’s software renders HTML.

Use both when you need reach and polish

Many mail systems send a multipart message containing an HTML part and a plain-text alternative. The recipient’s client selects the representation it can display or the user prefers. The two parts should communicate the same essential information; do not make the plain-text part an empty “view this email online” notice.

Accessibility: neither format wins automatically

W3C guidance emphasizes separating document structure from presentation and providing text equivalents for meaningful non-text content. In HTML, use semantic elements for their intended purpose, maintain a logical heading hierarchy, label form controls and give images concise alternative text when they convey information. Do not use visual styling alone to communicate an error or relationship.

Plain text avoids some markup mistakes, but it still needs readable paragraphs, descriptive wording and an order that makes sense when read linearly. If an image, chart or diagram carries essential information, describe the relevant conclusion in the text or provide an equivalent document.

Common misconceptions

“HTML is not text.”

HTML source is text. The useful distinction is between text that includes markup instructions and text presented without those instructions.

“Plain text cannot contain links.”

It can contain URLs such as https://example.com. The application may auto-link them, but the plain-text format itself does not define link behavior.

“HTML email is inaccessible.”

Inaccessible implementation is the problem, not HTML as a category. Semantic structure, keyboard support, contrast, readable copy and text alternatives determine whether a message can be used.

“Plain text is always accessible.”

Plain text is broadly displayable, but it has no semantic heading model and cannot communicate visual-only information without descriptions.

“HTML and Markdown are the same.”

They serve different stages. RFC 7763 quotes the distinction “HTML is a publishing format; Markdown is a writing format.” Markdown is commonly authored as readable text and then converted to HTML; it is not identical to either final HTML or a plain-text email part.

A decision checklist

  1. Identify the destination. Is the content a web page, an email, a terminal message, a log or an export file?
  2. List the required meaning. Do readers need headings, lists, tables, links, controls or image descriptions?
  3. Check rendering control. Can you test the browsers or mail clients that will receive the content?
  4. Plan a fallback. If HTML is used, provide an equivalent plain-text representation where the channel supports it.
  5. Test with assistive technology and narrow screens. Confirm that structure and meaning survive without relying on color, position or images.

Inspecting how HTML renders

For a one-off check, open the page in a browser, use the developer tools’ Elements panel to inspect the live DOM, and compare it with View Source. The Elements panel shows changes made by scripts; View Source shows the original response. Disable styles or use the browser’s accessibility tree to check whether the structure still communicates the intended meaning.

If you need a repeatable visual capture of a rendered HTML page for documentation or regression review, ScreenshotNeo provides a single HTTP request that returns PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. Before capture it can accept the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result. An MCP server also exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for all parameters. A minimal call is:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp

The same request in Python:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://example.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

And in Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://example.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

You can also request full-page captures with lazy images loaded, a CSS-selected element, dark mode, device presets, custom viewport and retina scale, PDF paper settings, custom CSS or JavaScript, click and wait actions, blocked resources, headers, cookies, user-agent, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen cache TTLs, signed image links, asynchronous webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call and usage data. Every feature is included on every plan. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots, and yearly billing provides two months free. FAQ

Can I convert HTML to plain text safely?

Yes, but treat conversion as a content transformation: preserve heading labels, list order, link destinations and image descriptions instead of merely deleting characters between angle brackets.

Does a .txt file ever contain formatting?

It can contain conventions such as indentation, capitalization and separator lines, but those conventions are not semantic instructions guaranteed to be interpreted consistently.

Why can two HTML emails look different?

Mail clients sanitize tags, support different CSS features and apply different defaults. A message should be tested in the clients and devices that matter to its audience.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is HTML a programming language?

HTML is a markup language: it labels document structure rather than providing general-purpose program logic. JavaScript is commonly used when a page needs application behavior.

Can plain text be used on a website?

Yes. A server can return a plain-text response for documentation, feeds, logs or accessibility fallbacks, but it will not provide HTML’s semantic elements or layout instructions.

Should every HTML document include CSS?

No. Valid semantic HTML can be useful without custom CSS; browsers apply default styles. CSS becomes necessary when you need a particular visual design or responsive presentation.
