HTML organizes a page’s content and gives it meaning; CSS controls how that content looks and is laid out; JavaScript adds many of the page’s behaviors and dynamic updates. They often work together, but they are different technologies with different jobs.

How HTML, CSS, and JavaScript differ

Technology Primary job What you typically change Typical form
HTML Structure and meaning Which content appears and how it is organized, such as headings, paragraphs, links, images, and forms Elements in an HTML document
CSS Presentation Visual styling and layout, such as spacing, colors, and positioning Rules in a stylesheet
JavaScript Behavior How a page responds to actions and updates content dynamically Statements in a script

MDN describes HTML as the web’s most basic building block: it defines the meaning and structure of web content. MDN’s HTML overview explains the elements used to mark up that content. MDN’s CSS overview describes CSS as the language for presenting documents, while MDN’s JavaScript overview covers the programming language commonly used to add functionality to web pages.

What each one does on a real page

HTML provides the content and structure

On a sign-up page, HTML can create the heading, explanatory text, labels, input fields, and submit button. The elements identify what each part is, not just what it looks like.

CSS controls presentation and layout

CSS can arrange the form, add space between its fields, set text and background colors, and adjust how the page is laid out. It changes presentation without changing the meaning of the form’s content.

JavaScript adds behavior

JavaScript can respond when a visitor submits the form—for example, by updating a message on the page. This is an illustrative option, not a requirement: a form can use HTML’s built-in controls and features without JavaScript.

How a browser connects them

A browser parses an HTML document into a Document Object Model, or DOM: a tree of nodes and objects representing the document. Scripts can use the DOM to access or change the page’s structure, content, and style, and event handlers can run when something happens, such as a user action. The DOM is a web interface, not part of the JavaScript language itself; JavaScript is simply the language most commonly used to work with it on web pages. MDN’s DOM guide explains this relationship.

Where the roles overlap

“HTML is structure, CSS is style, and JavaScript is behavior” is a helpful starting point, not a strict boundary between what the technologies can do. CSS can define visual states and transitions. JavaScript can modify document content and styling through the DOM. HTML also includes interactive controls and form features. The useful distinction is each technology’s primary role, not an absolute rule about what it can affect.

A practical order for learning them

  1. Make a small HTML page. Add a heading, a few paragraphs, a link, and perhaps a form so you can see how elements organize content.
  2. Add CSS. Change the spacing, colors, and layout while keeping the page’s content and meaning intact.
  3. Try a JavaScript interaction. Add a small response to a user action, such as changing a message after a button is pressed.

You can practice in a local code editor or in MDN’s browser playground. MDN’s basic HTML syntax guide offers a starting point for building a first document.
