HPE agreed to buy supercomputer maker Cray in May 2019 and completed the acquisition on September 25, 2019. The deal brought Cray’s supercomputing technology and expertise into HPE’s portfolio. HPE also said the combined capabilities could support future high-performance computing (HPC) and AI/ML services through GreenLake. That was a strategic plan announced at the time—not proof of a specific GreenLake service’s current availability or terms.
What HPE announced—and what it bought
On May 17, 2019, Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) announced a definitive agreement to acquire Cray, a maker of supercomputing systems. HPE said it would pay $35 per Cray share in cash. Its announcement described the deal as worth approximately $1.3 billion net of cash. HPE’s May 17 announcement
HPE completed the acquisition on September 25, 2019, earlier than the original target date. Its completion release put the transaction at approximately $1.4 billion net of cash. HPE’s later annual report recorded $1.5 billion in acquisition-date fair-value consideration. These figures describe the deal at different points and on different valuation bases; they are not interchangeable. HPE’s completion release · HPE’s 2021 annual report
Why Cray mattered to HPE
HPE presented the acquisition as a way to expand its high-performance computing and artificial intelligence portfolio. Cray brought supercomputing technology, research and development capability, and service and support experience. The combined portfolio was described as spanning compute, high-performance storage, system interconnects, software, and services.

The strategic fit was aimed beyond traditional supercomputer installations. HPE said the combination could bring Cray technology to a broader set of organizations, including enterprises, while adding Cray’s specialized systems expertise to HPE’s wider infrastructure business.
What “HPC as a service” meant in the announcement
HPE said the combined companies expected to introduce HPC-as-a-Service and AI/ML analytics through HPE GreenLake. GreenLake is HPE’s platform for delivering infrastructure and IT services through consumption-based models. The announcement framed the planned service as a way to access HPC capabilities without treating the purchase of a supercomputer as the only route.

That language described a future offering and HPE’s rationale for the deal. The 2019 releases do not establish the present availability, configuration, pricing, support scope, or geographic eligibility of a particular GreenLake HPC service. Buyers should confirm those details in current HPE service materials and contract documentation rather than infer them from the acquisition announcement.
Questions to ask when comparing deployment models
An organization evaluating HPC should compare a customer-owned, on-premises system with a service or consumption model using its own workload, facility, and procurement requirements. The 2019 announcements do not specify answers to these buyer-specific questions:

What HPE said about the HPC market
In its September 25, 2019 completion release, HPE cited a Hyperion forecast that the HPC segment and associated storage and services would grow from approximately $28 billion in 2018 to approximately $35 billion in 2021. This was a forecast attributed to Hyperion in May 2019, not a measurement of the market today. HPE used the outlook to support its view that HPC and AI represented growth opportunities.

HPE continues to use HPE Cray as its supercomputing brand. Its current portfolio materials describe systems and related software, storage, and services for HPC and AI. The name therefore persists as part of HPE’s current product identity, rather than referring only to the independent company acquired in 2019. HPE Cray supercomputing portfolio
