For U.S. buyers choosing between the newly announced 14-inch HP OmniBook 5 14 AI PC and Apple’s 13-inch MacBook Neo, the deciding factors are operating system, screen preference, and the actual configuration—not a proven performance or battery-life winner. The HP starts at $699.99 and is expected in October 2026; MacBook Neo starts at $599 and is available now. Choose Neo if you want macOS, value its documented iPhone features, or prefer a lower starting price. Choose HP if you need Windows or favor a larger OLED screen. These are recommendations based on published specifications, not hands-on testing.
Which laptop should you choose?
- Choose MacBook Neo if your essential apps require macOS, you already use an iPhone and want Apple’s documented continuity features, or a 13-inch display and lower published starting price suit you better.
- Choose the HP OmniBook 5 14 AI PC if you need Windows or specifically want a 14-inch OLED display.
Those recommendations are based on the announced features and prices. The evidence available does not establish an independently tested winner for performance, real-world battery life, keyboard comfort, thermals, or reliability.

What exactly is being compared?
HP’s OmniBook 5 name covers multiple devices. This comparison is about HP’s newly announced 14-inch OmniBook 5 14 AI PC, expected in the U.S. in October 2026—not every older 14- or 16-inch OmniBook 5 configuration. Tom’s Hardware reported the launch model’s 14-inch, 1920×1200 OLED display, 2.56-pound weight, and October timing (Tom’s Hardware).

MacBook Neo is Apple’s 13-inch macOS laptop, available to customers in the U.S. since March 11, 2026. The difference in release timing matters: the HP has an announced starting price, but a final retail listing and in-store availability for the October model are not established here. Confirm that a listing is for this new 14-inch version before comparing it with Neo.

Price and availability
| Model | Published U.S. starting price | Availability |
|---|---|---|
| HP OmniBook 5 14 AI PC | $699.99 (HP, 2026) | Expected October 2026 (HP, 2026) |
| Apple MacBook Neo | $599; $499 U.S. education price (Apple, 2026) | Customer availability began March 11, 2026 |
The listed prices are starting prices, not evidence of a current discount or a like-for-like configuration. Check live U.S. listings and compare the specific memory and storage in each SKU before buying. Apple’s education price applies to eligible education purchases; it is not the general starting price.
Operating system and ecosystem
Windows: HP OmniBook 5
Windows makes the HP the natural fit if your school, workplace, or essential software requires Windows. Check the requirements for your particular apps before choosing; the label “AI PC” does not establish that every specialized application will run or perform as you need.
macOS: MacBook Neo
Neo runs macOS. Apple documents features that connect Mac and iPhone workflows, so an iPhone owner who wants those specific capabilities may value the ecosystem fit. That is a feature-based recommendation, not a claim that macOS or Apple’s ecosystem is better for every buyer.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Displays: larger OLED or 13-inch Liquid Retina?
The HP launch option is a 14-inch 1920×1200 OLED panel. A higher-resolution 2560×1600 OLED touch option is planned for March 2027, so it should not be assumed to be available on October launch units. Apple lists Neo’s 13-inch Liquid Retina display at 500 nits. Choose by the size and display type you prefer; the published information does not establish a direct image-quality winner.
Battery claims are not an apples-to-apples test
HP advertises up to 42 hours for continuous local FHD video playback at 200 nits, with wireless on but not connected. Apple advertises up to 16 hours based on separate web or video tests over Wi-Fi, among other stated test conditions. These are vendor maximums measured using different methods, not results from a shared protocol. They do not establish which laptop will last longer in your everyday workload.
Ports and peripherals
HP describes dual full-function USB-C ports in its launch announcement. Apple lists two USB-C ports—one USB 3 and one USB 2—and a headphone jack; only the USB 3 port on the left supports external displays. The announcement does not provide a complete, final HP port list for every retail configuration, so confirm the listing for the exact SKU before planning a hub-free setup.
If you rely on USB-A devices, HDMI, a card reader, or an external monitor, check how each laptop connects to those peripherals and whether you need an adapter or hub. Do not assume the broad USB-C description alone answers every connection question.
Compare the configuration, not just the laptop name
Reported launch details for HP include Core 5 320 or Core 7 350 processors, 8 GB or 16 GB of memory, and 256 GB or 512 GB of storage. A 12 GB memory option and 1 TB storage option are planned for November 2026. Check the final retailer listing: these reported configurations and future options should not be treated as a guarantee of what is in stock or included at the starting price.
Apple’s announcement identifies the MacBook Neo configuration as an A18 Pro chip with 8 GB unified memory and 256 GB baseline storage in its test footnotes. For either laptop, compare the actual SKU’s memory, storage, ports, and price against what your apps and files require.
A practical buying checklist
- Confirm your required apps and OS. Check whether your essential software needs Windows or macOS before comparing hardware.
- Pick your screen preference. The announced HP launch option is 14-inch OLED; Neo is 13-inch Liquid Retina.
- Match memory and storage to your needs. Compare specific HP and Apple SKUs rather than their family names or base prices alone.
- Check every port you use. Verify the final HP configuration and account for Neo’s external-display port limitation.
- Check current price and availability. The HP is expected in October 2026; confirm the listing is the new 14-inch model. Compare live prices rather than assuming either published starting price is a discount.
What the published information does—and does not—show
HP’s Senior Vice President and Division President of Consumer Personal Systems, Samuel Chang, described the OmniBook 5 as offering “premium design and immersive experiences with a colorful OLED display in an incredibly portable package for work, study, and entertainment.” That is HP’s product statement, not an independent assessment. Published specifications can help identify which model better fits your needs, but they are not a matched independent comparison of the two laptops.
