If you need Windows, a 14-inch OLED screen, or more than 8GB of memory, the HP OmniBook 5 14-inch is the more suitable choice—provided the configuration you want is actually available. If you prefer macOS and mostly browse, write, stream, and handle light editing, the MacBook Neo is a strong fit. There is no published direct test of this exact HP model against the Neo, so choose by operating system, configuration, and price rather than assuming one is faster or lasts longer.
Which laptop should you buy?
- Choose the HP OmniBook 5 14-inch if you need Windows, want a 14-inch OLED display or touchscreen configuration, or can buy a verified model with more than 8GB of RAM.
- Choose the MacBook Neo if you want macOS, prefer a compact 13-inch aluminum laptop, and mainly use everyday productivity, browsing, media, or light photo editing apps.
- Choose neither on these facts alone for demanding creative, engineering, or workstation work. The Neo is not intended for workstation workloads, and performance of the newly announced OmniBook 5 has not been independently tested in a direct comparison.
Compare the exact HP RAM and storage configuration with the Neo listing you can actually buy. The OmniBook 5’s reported starting price is $699.99; Apple launched the Neo at $599 in March 2026, while RTINGS reported a regular starting price of $699 in an August 28, 2026 update. Prices can change, so check current listings before deciding.
Make sure you are comparing the right HP
The HP in this comparison is the HP OmniBook 5 14-inch announced in October 2026. It is not the HP OmniBook 5 Flip, a separate 2-in-1 that Tom’s Guide tested against the Neo. Specs and test results for the Flip do not establish how the newly announced OmniBook 5 performs.
How the reported specifications compare
| Feature | HP OmniBook 5 14-inch | MacBook Neo |
|---|---|---|
| Price | $699.99 reported starting price in Tom’s Hardware’s October 2026 announcement report; live price and availability not established. | $599 US launch price announced by Apple in March 2026; RTINGS reported a $699 regular starting price in its August 28, 2026 update. Check current price. |
| Operating system | Windows, per Tom’s Hardware’s product report. | macOS, per Apple and RTINGS. |
| Display | 14-inch, 1920 × 1200 OLED; touch and non-touch options reported. A higher-resolution touch OLED was reported as planned for March 2027, not as currently available. | 13-inch, 2408 × 1506 Liquid Retina display. |
| Processor | Intel Core 5 320 or Core 7 350 options reported. | Apple A18 Pro with a 6-core CPU and 5-core GPU. |
| Memory | 8GB or 16GB soldered LPDDR5-6400 options reported at launch; a 12GB option was reported as planned for November 2026. Confirm the exact retail SKU. | 8GB, not upgradeable, according to RTINGS. |
| Storage | 256GB or 512GB options reported; a 1TB option was reported as planned for November 2026. Confirm availability. | 256GB or 512GB, according to RTINGS. |
| Weight and battery | 2.56 pounds and a 60 Wh battery reported by Tom’s Hardware. HP’s “up to 42 hours” figure is a vendor claim for local video playback, not an independent general-use result. | Compact 13-inch design. Apple provided its own test methodology in its launch announcement; the sources cited here do not establish a directly comparable battery result. |
| Camera and ports | 1080p IR webcam and USB-C charging reported; check the precise configuration for port and biometric details. | 1080p webcam, two USB-C ports, and a headphone jack, according to RTINGS. |
These are reported product specifications, not a performance ranking. More screen area and a higher pixel count are different attributes; without a direct, comparable evaluation, the specifications alone do not prove which screen looks better. Processor names likewise cannot establish cross-platform speed.

Choose according to the work you do
Browsing, documents, calls, streaming, and light editing
Either laptop may suit ordinary everyday work. RTINGS describes the Neo as responsive for productivity, browsing, media, and light photo editing. If both meet your app needs, decide based on macOS versus Windows, preferred screen size, and the current price of the configuration you want.
Heavy multitasking or memory-intensive apps
The Neo’s 8GB of memory cannot be upgraded. RTINGS says it can become limiting for heavy multitasking and memory-intensive workloads, and advises avoiding 8GB Windows configurations where possible because 16GB provides more multitasking headroom. Consider the HP only if you verify that the specific OmniBook 5 configuration with more memory is available at a price you accept; its memory is soldered, so the chosen amount matters at purchase.

Demanding creative, engineering, or workstation work
Do not treat either as a proven workstation choice on the available evidence. RTINGS cautions that the Neo is not aimed at workstation workloads, while there is no independent direct performance test for the newly announced OmniBook 5 against it.

- 【 Intel Core 7 150U Processor】It is a high-end notebook CPU based on the Raptor Lake-U Refresh (RPL-U) series (Alder Lake architecture), which was introduced in January 2024. The CPU offers 2 performance cores (P-cores, Golden Cove architecture) and 8 efficiency cores (E-cores, Gracemont architecture). The P-cores support hyperthreading (therefore 12 threads together) and clock from 1.8 to 5.4 GHz. The E-cores clock from 1.2 - 4 GHz and should offer comparable performance to old Skylake cores.
- 【14.0 " (1920x1200) touch Display】Intuitive touchscreen technology lets you control your PC right from the screen. Transform your content with 1920 x 1200 resolution and 178-degree wide-viewing angles. Make taking notes, sketching, and editing easier by rotating the screen to tablet or tent mode. Multitouch-enabled, IPS (in-plane switching), edge-to-edge glass.
- 【Other features】Intel Graphics,Microsoft Copilot,Tuned stereo speakers,HP Audio Boost,HP 5MP IR Camera with HDR Switch, Backlit Keyboard, Windows 11 Home OS.
Compare price and configuration before checkout
- Confirm the exact model. Look for “OmniBook 5 14-inch,” not “OmniBook 5 Flip.” The Flip’s published test results apply to a different laptop.
- Check the HP’s actual RAM and storage. The announcement reports multiple options, including planned configurations. Since the memory is soldered, do not assume a future upgrade is possible or that every reported option is in stock.
- Match the configuration to your needs. Compare the price of the precise HP RAM and storage combination with the Neo’s 256GB or 512GB version—not just each product’s lowest advertised price.
- Verify live price and stock. The HP’s reported $699.99 starting price is from its October 2026 announcement coverage; the Neo’s launch and later reported regular prices differ. Retail availability and current prices are not established here.
- Check screen, ports, and biometrics on the SKU page. The HP has reported touch and non-touch OLED choices and USB-C charging; exact retail configuration details may matter. Confirm the ports and biometric options you need before ordering.
What battery and performance claims can—and cannot—tell you
HP’s reported “up to 42 hours” for the OmniBook 5 is a company claim based on local video playback. It should not be read as a prediction of mixed everyday use or compared directly with a web-browsing test.
Tom’s Guide measured 13 hours 28 minutes for the MacBook Neo and close to 10 hours for the OmniBook 5 Flip in a Wi-Fi web-browsing test at 150 nits. Those results describe the Neo and the Flip, not the newly announced OmniBook 5; they are not a head-to-head battery comparison for the two models in this article.

No published direct benchmark for the exact OmniBook 5 14-inch and MacBook Neo pair is established by these sources. The HP specifications come from an announcement report, while the Neo has an independent RTINGS review. Do not infer which is faster, better value, or longer-lasting from the available figures alone.
A separate Windows option under $700
If you are open to a different HP model, RTINGS identifies the HP OmniBook 3 14 (2025) as its best Windows laptop under $700 and recommends a 16GB configuration where possible. It is a separate product, not the OmniBook 5 discussed above, and its recommendation does not establish its price or availability for every buyer.
