HP Dimension with Google Beam is a real enterprise video-call system that creates a life-sized, glasses-free 3D image of the person on the other end. The “hologram” shorthand describes the effect, not a person floating in the room: Beam uses cameras, AI, and a specialized light-field display in a dedicated meeting-room installation.
What HP Dimension with Google Beam actually is
HP Dimension with Google Beam is a room-based video-communication system developed by HP and Google. Google Beam is the commercial successor to Project Starline. It is designed to make a remote participant appear life-sized and three-dimensional on a display, with spatial audio, so people can speak face-to-face without wearing a headset or glasses.
That is a significant step toward more lifelike remote meetings, but it is not a science-fiction hologram projected freely into open air. You see the 3D image on Beam’s specialized display. Google describes the result as true-to-life 3D video communication; “hologram” is a convenient description of the visual impression, not the product’s technical format.
How Beam creates its 3D effect
Google says its AI volumetric-video model turns ordinary 2D camera feeds into a 3D experience that appears dimensional from different viewing angles. The display delivers separate simultaneous 3D streams to each eye, while audio and room features help the conversation feel more natural.

- Light-field display: Google specifies a 65-inch 8K display with 33.2 million pixels and 60 frames per second.
- Camera capture: HP’s current product page lists seven cameras. HP’s June 2025 launch release and its August 2026 Japan release describe six-camera capture, so the published count differs by source or product-page version.
- Spatial sound: Four high-fidelity speakers provide spatial audio; real-time audio filtering is also part of the system.
- Room adaptation: Adaptive lighting is intended to help create a consistent, lifelike image.
In practical terms, Beam is a coordinated capture-and-display system, not a camera effect that can be reproduced by installing an app on a laptop.
What the reported studies say—and what they do not prove
HP has publicized several favorable comparisons with traditional video calls. These are vendor-reported behavioral studies and pilot results, not independent testing in the evidence available here. The figures also come from different reports and should not be treated as measurements from one single trial.

| Reported result | Source and qualification |
|---|---|
| 28% increase in memory recall | HP’s June 11, 2025 launch release, citing Google/Starline behavioral research. |
| Up to 39% more non-verbal behaviors displayed | HP’s June 11, 2025 launch release, citing Google/Starline behavioral research. |
| At least 14% increase in focus on the meeting partner | HP’s June 11, 2025 launch release, citing Google/Starline behavioral research. |
| 37% more turn-taking and 28% higher information retention | HP’s current product page, citing Google Beam behavioral research from April 2023. |
| More than 87% of participants rated Beam meetings better than traditional video conferencing | HP’s September 2026 newsroom post, describing an internal Google pilot and ratings across presence, attentiveness, non-verbal communication, and personal connection. |
These findings suggest why an organization might consider Beam for conversations where attention, body language, and rapport matter. They do not establish that every meeting will produce the same gains, or that Beam is a better fit than ordinary video for every kind of work.

Meetings, platforms, and situations where Beam may fit
HP says Beam supports native Zoom Rooms and Google Meet, and can interoperate with cloud services including Microsoft Teams and Cisco Webex. “Interoperate” is not the same claim as having a native room experience for every service, so buyers should confirm the intended workflow and configuration with HP or their deployment partner.

Ideal for conferencing, gaming, streaming, recording, and online learning.
HP’s 2026 customer examples focus on client conversations, complex problem-solving, coaching and mentoring, recruiting, and strategic working sessions—situations where eye contact and non-verbal cues may be valuable. Bain & Company piloted Beam for candidate-recruitment calls. Google has named Zoom and HP as industry partners, and Diversified and AVI-SPL as channel partners.
Beam is not a replacement for every video-conference room. A conventional room system is likely the more practical choice for routine group calls, broad collaboration, or meetings where a specialized one-to-one 3D presence is not worth the dedicated hardware and deployment effort.

Availability and Japan pricing
Google announced in May 2025 that HP Beam devices would reach select customers later that year. HP’s September 23, 2026 newsroom post says expanded availability covers the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Japan. HP Japan’s August 27, 2026 release says rollout in Japan starts in October 2026.
| HP Japan model | Listed price | Included accessories |
|---|---|---|
| Wall-mounted | ¥6,598,900, tax included | Poly TC10 touch controller and two HP Poly A2 expansion microphones. |
| Floor-stand | ¥7,546,000, tax included | Poly TC10 touch controller and two HP Poly A2 expansion microphones. |
Those are Japan-listed prices from HP Japan’s August 27, 2026 release; they are not a global price list. Google Beam licensing, installation, maintenance, room fit-out, recommended furniture, and construction may cost extra. The available information does not establish a universal total deployment cost.

For availability or a quote, the appropriate route is enterprise sales or an authorized deployment partner. No verified Amazon listing for the central Beam system is established here; its dedicated room hardware and professional deployment also make it unlike a consumer webcam purchase.
Room and network requirements
Google’s technology page lists specifications that make clear Beam is a substantial room installation rather than a plug-in accessory.
| Requirement or specification | Google-listed value |
|---|---|
| System weight | 254 lb (115.4 kg) |
| Dimensions | 67.9 × 11.5 × 44.8 inches |
| Power consumption during an active call | 600 W |
| Network connection | At least 50 Mbps symmetrical, with latency under 100 ms to each unit |
Before committing, an organization should assess room size and layout, network performance to the Beam unit, power, installation access, and any construction or furniture work. It should also get a complete quote that separates the device price from licensing, installation, support, and room preparation.

How Beam compares with conventional video calls
| Decision point | HP Dimension with Google Beam | Conventional video conferencing |
|---|---|---|
| Sense of presence and eye contact | Designed for a life-sized 3D image and spatial audio without wearables. | Typically presents participants through a conventional camera-and-screen view. |
| Hardware and room | Dedicated light-field display, multi-camera capture, and professional room deployment. | Can use ordinary room cameras and displays; exact setup varies. |
| Platform support | Native Zoom Rooms and Google Meet, with stated interoperability with Microsoft Teams and Cisco Webex. | Varies by conferencing system and software. |
| Network and installation | Google lists a 50 Mbps symmetrical minimum and under 100 ms latency to each unit, plus substantial power and physical requirements. | Requirements vary by room equipment and service. |
| Best-fit meeting pattern | Especially relevant to conversations where presence and non-verbal cues are central. | More flexible for routine calls, broad group meetings, and organizations prioritizing familiar room setups. |
| Total cost | Japan list prices are stated above; licensing and deployment extras may apply. | Depends on existing equipment, service, support, and room needs. |
The decision is less about whether 3D looks more impressive than a standard call and more about whether the added sense of presence justifies a dedicated room, connectivity, and ongoing deployment costs for the meetings an organization actually holds.
