YouTube fan funding lets eligible creators earn through channel memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers, and Super Thanks. Each feature connects a viewer payment to a different kind of interaction: recurring member perks, highlighted live-chat messages or stickers, or a one-time purchase on an eligible video or Short. Access depends on YouTube Partner Program eligibility, location, channel status, and the rules for each feature.
What YouTube fan funding means
YouTube groups channel memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers, and Super Thanks under its fan-funding features. They let viewers pay through YouTube for specified perks or interactions. They are not interchangeable: one is a recurring membership, two are tied to live chat, and one is attached to eligible on-demand content. YouTube’s Commerce Products monetization policies describe fan funding as a way to earn extra income while connecting with viewers and building a community.
How each feature works
Channel memberships: recurring support for perks
Viewers pay a recurring monthly amount to join a channel’s membership program. In return, the creator provides members-only perks, which may include badges, emoji, and other goods. The creator defines the available perks, subject to YouTube’s terms and policies.

During an eligible live stream or Premiere, a viewer can buy a Super Chat to make a message stand out in live chat. It is a paid chat interaction, not a recurring subscription. YouTube’s Super Chat and Super Stickers eligibility guidance covers the feature and its requirements.
#1 Best Overall
Super Stickers: paid animated stickers in live chat
Super Stickers are paid animated stickers that viewers can surface in live chat during eligible streams and Premieres. Like Super Chat, they are associated with live chat rather than ongoing access to channel content.
Super Thanks: one-time appreciation on a video or Short
A viewer can make a one-time Super Thanks purchase on an eligible long-form video or Short. The buyer sees an animation and can post a customizable comment. Super Thanks is not available on every piece of content: YouTube excludes age-restricted, unlisted, private, made-for-kids, copyright-claimed, or comments-disabled videos and Shorts. It also cannot be purchased on a live stream or Premiere while it is live. See YouTube’s Super Thanks eligibility and policy page and instructions for buying Super Thanks.

Which feature fits which interaction?
| Feature | When viewers use it | What the payment is associated with |
|---|---|---|
| Channel memberships | Ongoing | Recurring monthly membership and creator-provided perks |
| Super Chat | Live streams and Premieres | A highlighted message in live chat |
| Super Stickers | Live streams and Premieres | An animated sticker in live chat |
| Super Thanks | Eligible long-form videos and Shorts | A one-time purchase, animation, and customizable comment |
This comparison is about format and timing; it does not establish that one feature earns more than another. A creator can consider which kinds of interaction suit their audience and content, then check what is available to their channel.

Who can enable fan-funding features?
The baseline requirements include joining the YouTube Partner Program (YPP), being at least 18, and living in a location where the relevant feature is available. Creators also need to accept and follow the Commerce Product Module and applicable policies, and enable each feature in YouTube Studio. Individual features may have additional conditions. YouTube’s monetization overview and feature setup guidance explain current requirements; confirm your account’s status in Studio because availability varies by location and channel or content status.

Expanded YPP access is not universal
YouTube describes an earlier access tier in eligible locations with these thresholds: 500 subscribers, at least three public uploads in the last 90 days, and either 3,000 qualified public watch hours in the last 365 days or 3 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days. Its expanded YPP setup page lists memberships and Supers among the features available at that tier. This rollout and these thresholds are location-dependent, so do not assume they apply to every channel. Check the Earn tab in YouTube Studio and the official requirements for your location.
How to check and turn features on
- Check your channel’s status: Open YouTube Studio and review the Earn tab for YPP eligibility and the features offered to your channel.
- Review the applicable terms: Read and accept the Commerce Product Module and any relevant feature terms, and make sure your channel follows YouTube’s applicable policies.
- Enable features individually: In YouTube Studio, use the monetization or Earn controls available for your channel to turn on each eligible feature. You may need to meet feature-specific conditions before its control appears or can be enabled.
- Check content eligibility for Super Thanks: Even with the feature available to your channel, an individual video or Short may not qualify. Check its visibility, audience setting, copyright status, age restriction, and comment availability.
YouTube can change its rules, location coverage, and Studio labels. If a feature is missing, treat the Earn tab and the current official feature page as the account-specific reference rather than assuming every creator sees the same controls.

How much creators receive—and what the percentage means
YouTube says creators receive 70% of Super Thanks revenue recognized by Google after local sales tax and applicable iOS App Store fees are deducted. YouTube currently covers transaction costs such as credit-card fees. This 70% statement is specific to Super Thanks; it should not be applied to channel memberships, Super Chat, or Super Stickers without feature-specific evidence. Consult YouTube’s Super Thanks policy for the current terms.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFan funding is not the same as donations or merchandise
YouTube explicitly states that Super Thanks is not a crowdfunding or donation tool. It is a platform purchase linked to interaction with an eligible video or Short. YouTube Giving is a separate feature for nonprofit fundraising. Shopping, product tagging, and official branded merchandise are also separate commerce options; creators do not need to sell merchandise to use fan funding. See YouTube’s Super Thanks policy and Shopping guidance.

Keeping a YouTube channel live is a separate problem
Fan funding covers viewer payments and interactions; it does not itself keep a broadcast running. If you want to run a continuous YouTube stream from uploaded recordings, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service: upload a video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops the uploaded material from the cloud, so a computer at home does not have to stay on. The same slot price applies to any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
Or let it run in the cloud
Upload your recording or playlist to StreamNeo, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploaded video streams at its original quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and the service automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
