YouTube creators can earn through Watch Page ads, Shorts Feed ads, YouTube Premium viewing, channel memberships, fan-funding features, Shopping, sponsorships, and affiliate relationships. There is no dependable universal payment per view: each route has different eligibility rules and revenue calculations, and YouTube does not guarantee how much a creator will earn.

How YouTube monetization works

The YouTube Partner Program (YPP) provides access to the platform’s monetization features. Some features become available at an earlier eligibility tier, while Watch Page ads, Shorts Feed ads, and YouTube Premium require the higher tier. Country availability, feature-specific conditions, and a channel policy review also matter. YouTube pays monetizing creators through AdSense for YouTube.

The thresholds below are YouTube’s published terms as accessed on October 3, 2026; they can change, and meeting a threshold does not by itself guarantee acceptance or access to every feature.

YPP tier Published threshold What it can unlock
Expanded YPP 500 subscribers; three valid public uploads in the last 90 days; and either 3,000 qualified public watch hours in the last 12 months or 3 million qualified public Shorts views in the last 90 days Earlier access to eligible fan-funding and Shopping features in regions where the expanded program is available
Higher YPP tier 1,000 subscribers; and either 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the last 12 months or 10 million qualified public Shorts views in the last 90 days Eligibility for Watch Page ads, Shorts Feed ads, and YouTube Premium revenue, subject to feature conditions and review

Revenue from ads and YouTube Premium

Watch Page ads

Watch Page ads may appear before, during, after, or around eligible public long-form videos and live streams. A creator who accepts the Watch Page Monetization Module receives 55% of net revenue from Watch Page ads under YouTube’s published terms accessed October 3, 2026. That percentage is based on net Watch Page ad revenue, not a guaranteed amount per view. Videos are reviewed, and switching ads on does not guarantee that ads will be served.

Shorts Feed ads

Ads shown between videos in the Shorts Feed contribute to a creator pool. Under the Shorts module, YouTube allocates revenue to creators through that pool and states that creators receive 45% of their allocated amount. This is not 45% of a particular ad shown next to one Short, nor is it calculated on the same basis as Watch Page ad revenue.

YouTube Premium

When Premium subscribers watch eligible creator content, creators may receive a portion of subscription revenue under the relevant agreement and module terms. This is a separate mechanism from ads; the amount depends on eligible Premium viewing rather than a universal rate per view.

YouTube describes these terms in its YouTube partner earnings overview.

Memberships and other viewer-funded features

Channel memberships

Members make recurring monthly payments in exchange for channel perks set by the creator. YouTube states that creators receive 70% of net revenue from channel memberships through the Commerce Product Module under terms accessed October 3, 2026. Eligibility and available membership features vary by region and channel.

Super Chat, Super Stickers, and Super Thanks

Super Chat and Super Stickers let eligible viewers pay to highlight or decorate messages in live chat. Super Thanks lets viewers make a one-time payment to support eligible videos or Shorts. YouTube’s published share for these features, like memberships, is 70% of net revenue through the Commerce Product Module. These purchases depend on viewers choosing to pay; they are not a per-view payment.

For current feature availability and conditions, consult YouTube’s YPP monetization options.

Shopping, sponsorships, and affiliate income

YouTube Shopping

Shopping can include a creator’s own merchandise store and, for eligible creators, product tags for third-party products that may earn commissions. This is commerce income, not an advertising rate. YouTube does not establish one commission amount for all products in the overview, and availability and terms can vary.

Sponsorships and branded content

A brand may pay a creator for a sponsorship, endorsement, product placement, or other commercial relationship. These arrangements are negotiated individually, so there is no standard platform payout. YouTube’s paid-promotion guidance explains how to flag eligible videos containing paid promotion so viewers see the platform notice.

Affiliate links

Creators may earn commission when viewers buy through affiliate links, whether through an eligible YouTube Shopping feature or an external arrangement. Do not assume a particular program is available or pays a particular rate without checking its terms. In U.S. guidance, the Federal Trade Commission says that for an example involving free products and affiliate commissions, creators should disclose the relationship in the video and in the description near the links. The FTC’s endorsement guidance addresses U.S. disclosure expectations; creators should check the rules that apply where they operate and where their audience is located.

Why there is no reliable universal pay-per-view figure

A view can involve different monetization routes—or none. Long-form ad revenue, Shorts pool allocations, Premium viewing, memberships, viewer purchases, product sales, and brand deals each use a different mechanism. Eligibility, viewer behavior, content suitability, geography, and the applicable module terms also affect what income a channel receives.

YouTube’s earnings overview states: “There are no guarantees under the YouTube partner agreement about how much or whether you’ll be paid.” Because the official terms do not establish a universal RPM, average creator income, or guaranteed rate per view, a single figure advertised as what YouTube pays for every view is not a dependable estimate.

Tax and policy considerations

Monetization is subject to YouTube’s policies and review, and creators may owe tax on earnings. Tax treatment depends on the creator’s circumstances and jurisdiction; consult local tax authorities or a qualified professional rather than treating platform revenue figures as take-home income.

Keeping a prerecorded YouTube stream live

Creators who use looping prerecorded video as a live stream should make sure they have the rights to the video and audio and comply with YouTube’s monetization and content policies. A live format or long runtime does not itself establish eligibility or guarantee revenue.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube from the cloud: upload your recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. It streams the file as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. Start a free day on StreamNeo.
