Yoast SEO analyzes a draft continuously as you edit it. You enter a focus keyphrase, and Yoast recalculates individual checks against the text, title, URL, meta description and related fields. Its traffic lights show whether each check is within Yoast’s guidance: green meets the stated threshold, orange suggests an improvement, and red indicates a problem. The result is an editing aid—not a Google ranking score or a promise of search traffic.
The analysis appears in the WordPress and Shopify editing interfaces and is also available through the Yoast SEO Google Docs add-on. Yoast’s developer documentation describes the underlying YoastSEO.js layer as a JavaScript content-analysis tool designed to update in real time or semi-real time inside an editing experience.
What Yoast analyzes while you write
Yoast separates its feedback into SEO analysis and readability analysis. Both recalculate when the content or metadata changes, but they answer different questions.
SEO analysis follows a focus keyphrase
After you enter a focus keyphrase, Yoast looks for that phrase and related signals in the places searchers and search engines use to understand a page. Depending on the editor and language, checks can include:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors#1 Best Overall
- SEO title and whether its displayed width is likely to fit in search results.
- URL (slug) and the presence of the keyphrase.
- Meta description and its length.
- The introduction and main body text.
- Subheadings.
- Internal links to pages on your site.
- Outbound links to relevant external pages.
- Image alternative text.
- Text length and other structural signals.
Yoast’s current SEO feature page describes “over 15 checks.” That is a current product claim, not an independent ranking statistic, and the exact checks shown can vary by product, editor and language. See Yoast’s SEO analysis documentation for the current feature description.
The editor recalculates assessments, not a single page score
Each assessment has its own state. Adding the keyphrase to a subheading may turn that check green while a too-long meta description remains orange. The lights therefore summarize a collection of thresholds; they are not combined into a formula used by Google.
How the traffic-light interface works
Green, orange and red
- Green: the check meets Yoast’s stated guidance for that assessment.
- Orange: the content is close or could be improved.
- Red: Yoast found a more substantial problem against that check.
In the sidebar, assessments are grouped under Problems, Improvements and Good results. An eye icon can highlight the relevant text in the editor, which helps you locate the sentence, heading or metadata field that triggered feedback. The interface is documented in Yoast’s sidebar guide.
Why a green light is not a ranking guarantee
Yoast can evaluate wording and page elements available in the editor. It cannot know every factor affecting a query, such as competing pages, links, search intent, crawlability, indexing decisions or Google’s changing systems. Treat the lights as a pre-publication checklist and a way to find omissions, not as an instruction to force every light green.
What “real time” means technically
The visible feedback is powered by the YoastSEO.js analysis layer. Yoast’s developer documentation says it provides SEO, accessibility and readability checks, includes a snippet editor for the title, URL and meta-description previews, and is intended to update in real time or semi-real time inside an editing experience. In practice, the editor sends the current content and metadata through the analysis routines whenever you type, paste, change a field or alter a setting; the sidebar then refreshes the affected assessments.
Rank #2
“Real time” does not mean that a page is being tested in Google’s index. It means the local editing analysis is recalculated as the draft changes. A saved post can therefore show different feedback after a title, slug, image or paragraph is edited.
Readability analysis is a separate family of checks
Readability runs alongside SEO analysis but evaluates how the prose is structured and phrased rather than whether a keyphrase appears in particular fields.
Core readability checks
Yoast lists these checks in its core readability analysis:
Recommended Free Tools
- Subheading distribution.
- Paragraph length.
- Sentence length.
- Consecutive sentences that begin similarly or use the same pattern.
- Passive voice.
- Transition words.
- Whether text is present for the analysis to evaluate.
An older official how-to page also describes a Flesch reading-ease score. Because the current interface and language support can change, verify whether that item is enabled for your editor and language instead of assuming it appears for every post. Yoast describes the current feature set at its readability analysis page.
What readability feedback can and cannot tell you
A long sentence may be grammatically correct and appropriate for a technical audience, while a short sentence can still be unclear. Use the flags to inspect passages, then apply editorial judgment. Simplifying every sentence to satisfy a threshold can remove necessary definitions or nuance.
Free Yoast SEO versus Yoast SEO Premium analysis
The free plugin supplies the basic SEO and readability checks. Premium expands the range of phrases it can understand, adds deeper language checks and provides AI assistance.

The comparison reflects Yoast’s feature descriptions at its SEO analysis page and its readability page. Availability can depend on the editing surface and supported language.
A practical workflow for using the analysis
- Choose the search intent first. Decide what a visitor should accomplish and select one primary focus keyphrase that represents that intent.
- Enter the phrase in Yoast’s focus-keyphrase field. The SEO assessments then have a target to evaluate.
- Write the draft naturally. Include the subject in the title, introduction, useful subheadings and body where it belongs; do not repeat it where it would sound unnatural.
- Complete the snippet fields. Review the SEO title, URL and meta description in the snippet editor. Check that the wording is accurate and compelling, not merely within a character or width threshold.
- Add supporting page elements. Check internal links, useful outbound references and descriptive image alt text.
- Review readability flags in context. Break up genuinely dense paragraphs, clarify long sentences and add transitions where the relationship between ideas is unclear.
- Inspect highlighted passages. Use the eye icon to find the exact text behind a warning, then decide whether the suggested change improves the reader’s experience.
- Run a human editorial pass. Confirm facts, intent, accessibility, links and the final page preview before publishing. Do not delay publication solely because one non-critical assessment remains orange.
Language support and editing surfaces
Most checks work in many supported languages, but Yoast documents language-specific exceptions and differences in behavior. A check available in one language may be absent or use different linguistic rules in another. Consult Yoast’s features-per-language documentation when working in a multilingual site.
The analysis is integrated into WordPress and Shopify editing interfaces and is listed for the Yoast SEO Google Docs add-on. The exact sidebar labels and available assessments can differ between those surfaces, so screenshots or instructions from one editor should not be assumed to match another.
Can you retrieve Yoast scores programmatically?
Yoast’s developer portal documents read-only abilities for retrieving SEO, readability and inclusive-language scores for recently modified posts. The SEO ability also returns the focus keyphrase. These abilities are for reading analysis results; they do not turn Yoast into a ranking-data API or replace editorial review. The documented interface is at Yoast’s analysis-scores reference.

Troubleshooting common feedback and interface problems
The keyphrase checks stay red even though the phrase appears
Confirm that the focus keyphrase is entered exactly as intended and that you are editing the field Yoast analyzes. Check the title, slug, introduction, headings, body, links and image alt text separately; appearing once in the body does not satisfy every location-specific assessment. Language-specific matching and word-form behavior can also affect recognition.

Verify the selected language and editor. Yoast does not provide identical checks for every language, and the WordPress, Shopify and Google Docs surfaces can expose different controls. The language support page is the authoritative place to check a particular assessment.
The traffic light changed after editing metadata
This is expected. Yoast recalculates when the SEO title, URL or meta description changes, so a previously green result can change when the available text or phrase placement changes.
The sidebar does not update immediately
Allow a moment for semi-real-time analysis, then save or refresh the editor. If it remains stale, check for JavaScript errors, plugin conflicts, blocked scripts or an outdated Yoast installation. Test in a clean browser session and compare the result with the editor’s current language setting.
The page is green but performs poorly in search
Use the analysis as an on-page quality check, then investigate search intent, indexing, crawl access, competition, content usefulness and links. Yoast’s thresholds cannot measure all of those external factors.

When screenshots of Yoast’s interface are useful
Documentation, support tickets and training materials often need a current screenshot of the editor sidebar or snippet preview. Capture the page only after opening the relevant panel and dismissing overlays so the assessment text is readable. If the interface contains a cookie banner, newsletter popup or chat widget, remove those before sharing the image and avoid exposing private post content.
Or skip the browser setup
For repeatable documentation screenshots, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns PNG, JPEG or WebP (or a PDF), and its cleanup steps accept consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed; each response identifies the page verdict and billing state in headers.
Example cURL request (see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://yoast.com/features/seo-analysis/ -o yoast-analysis.webp
ScreenshotNeo also offers an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.
What to remember
- Yoast recalculates checks as your draft and metadata change.
- A focus keyphrase drives SEO assessments; readability checks evaluate prose structure and phrasing.
- Traffic lights describe Yoast thresholds, not Google ranking probabilities.
- Premium adds related phrases and synonyms, word-form recognition, distribution analysis, deeper readability checks and Yoast AI Optimize.
- Language and editor determine which assessments are available.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Yoast analyze a page after it is published?
Its traffic-light analysis is primarily an editing aid that recalculates while you work. It does not independently monitor rankings or guarantee that a published URL will perform in search.
Can I use Yoast without entering a focus keyphrase?
Yes, but the keyphrase-specific SEO assessments need a focus keyphrase. Readability checks can still evaluate the structure and wording of text.
Are orange and red lights errors that block publishing?
No. They are recommendations and warnings. Decide whether a change is appropriate for the reader, intent and language of the page.
Why do Yoast checks differ between languages?
Yoast documents language-specific exceptions and behavior differences, so not every assessment is available or calculated identically in every supported language.
