The short answer: X-BAT is a developing VTOL fighter concept, while the F-35B is an operational STOVL aircraft with published specifications and a documented carrier role. Shield AI describes X-BAT as longer-ranged and autonomous, but those are company claims—not independently verified performance results. The available sources support a detailed comparison with the F-35B, not a numerical ranking against other STOVL aircraft.
How does X-BAT compare with the F-35B and other STOVL aircraft?
The main difference is evidence maturity. Shield AI announced X-BAT on October 22, 2025, as an AI-piloted, vertical-takeoff-and-landing fighter intended for expeditionary and maritime operations. The company says it is designed for strike, counter-air, electronic warfare and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions, either autonomously or in collaboration with other systems. These are developer descriptions of the planned aircraft, not proof of operational capability. (Shield AI announcement)
The F-35B, by contrast, is in service. The Royal Air Force identifies it as the UK’s Harrier replacement and describes its role operating from the Queen Elizabeth-class carriers. That operator context is a meaningful distinction from a program still progressing toward vertical flight. (Royal Air Force: F-35B Lightning)

| Status in the cited sources | Announced program; a propulsion integration and engine light-off milestone was reported in 2026. (GE Aerospace and Shield AI) | Operational aircraft; selected by the UK to replace the Harrier and serve aboard Queen Elizabeth-class carriers. (RAF) |
| Vertical-lift approach described by the sources | VTOL design using an AVEN thrust-vectoring exhaust nozzle integrated with a GE F110-GE-129E engine. (GE Aerospace and Shield AI) | Shaft-driven LiftFan propulsion system. (Lockheed Martin F-35B product card) |
| Published range figures | More than 2,000 nautical miles with full mission payload, as claimed by Shield AI; independent validation is not established in the cited sources. (Shield AI) | Internal-fuel range greater than 900 nautical miles and combat radius greater than 450 nautical miles, according to Lockheed Martin. (Lockheed Martin) |
| Other published figures | GE Aerospace and Shield AI say each internal bay can carry weapons in the up-to-2,000-pound class. This is a design description, not a demonstrated loadout. (GE Aerospace and Shield AI) | Mach 1.6 speed and a 15,000-pound weapons payload, according to Lockheed Martin. (Lockheed Martin) |
These figures are not a direct performance contest. X-BAT’s claimed range is described with a full mission payload; the F-35B figures distinguish internal-fuel range from combat radius, and the published payload figure is a separate measure. The sources do not establish matching mission profiles or test conditions for a like-for-like comparison.

What is known about X-BAT’s design and progress?
Vertical flight remains a design goal, not a reported achievement
On July 20, 2026, GE Aerospace and Shield AI reported completing integrated actuation and engine light-off testing of X-BAT’s AVEN nozzle. They characterized this as a step on the program’s path toward vertical flight. The milestone does not establish that X-BAT has taken off or landed vertically. (GE Aerospace and Shield AI)
The companies describe the nozzle-and-engine arrangement as central to enabling vertical takeoff and landing. That is a different described propulsion approach from the F-35B’s shaft-driven LiftFan system; the cited material does not support a conclusion about which arrangement is more efficient, reliable or effective.

Mission and autonomy claims are prospective
Shield AI presents X-BAT as a multirole aircraft for strike, counter-air, electronic warfare and ISR, with Hivemind autonomy for standalone or collaborative operation. Those claims describe intended capability. The cited sources do not establish autonomous performance in contested operations or provide independent mission results.

Cost claims lack a published comparison basis
Shield AI says X-BAT is intended to cost an order of magnitude less in acquisition and lifecycle costs than fifth-generation jets. The announcement does not provide a sourced cost basis for that comparison, and the cited F-35B product card does not provide a cost figure. Treat the statement as a company target or claim, not a verified saving or a direct X-BAT-versus-F-35B price comparison. (Shield AI; Lockheed Martin)

- 【Realistic restoration】-The F-35 Lightning II is an American fifth-generation multirole fighter. This f35B lightning diecast Fighter jet model is based on the real F-35 aircraft produced under the JSF program, with lightning bolts on the vertical wings, the flags of the countries participating in the JSF program on the sides of the fuselage, and a few small, particularly elaborate markings, you are amazed at the level of reproduction that accurately captures the essence of the real aircraft.
- 【Material Craft】-F-35 Fighter jet Model kits is a metal die-cast airplane model kit, 90% made of high quality metal, the model is strong and durable. The surface adopts baking paint process to avoid the problem of cracking or fading paint. This military aircraft model kits for adults also has fine details such as cockpit, engine, missiles, etc. There are also clear painting and markings, smooth surface and bright colors, which restore the appearance of the real fighter jet.
- 【Scale and Details】- The 1/72 scale die-cast metal airplane model kit has an awesome scale size. The overall dimension size is 8.27*5.91*2.76 inches, it weighs 0.47 pounds, and the details and craftsmanship of its performance yet gives a visual effect of heavy realism. In addition, the cockpit of this airplanes model can be opened, the belly is open, you can see the missile parts in the bomb bay, and there is also a simulated pilot model in the cockpit.

Where do Harrier and other STOVL aircraft fit?
The RAF’s description establishes that the UK selected the F-35B to replace the Harrier and operate from its Queen Elizabeth-class carriers. It does not supply comparable Harrier specifications, and a historical predecessor is not automatically a current equivalent for a performance comparison. The cited sources likewise do not provide enough primary-source specifications to rank X-BAT numerically against Harrier variants or other STOVL aircraft.
For now, “other STOVL aircraft” is best treated as context: the F-35B is the sourced operational comparison here, while X-BAT is a developing VTOL program. A broader technical ranking would require comparable, documented specifications and test evidence for each aircraft.

- Established in the cited material: Lockheed Martin publishes F-35B speed, range, combat-radius and payload figures; the RAF documents the aircraft’s UK carrier and Harrier-replacement context.
- Announced or claimed for X-BAT: its intended missions, autonomy concept, full-payload range, internal-bay weapon class and lower-cost goal come from Shield AI or its propulsion partner.
- Not established by these sources: independently verified X-BAT range, operational performance, cost, readiness or service date. The 2026 engine light-off milestone is not evidence of completed vertical flight.
