Wireless Multimedia Extensions (WME) is the former or alternate name for Wi-Fi Multimedia (WMM), a Wi-Fi quality-of-service feature that gives voice, video, and other traffic different priorities for access to the shared wireless network. It can favor time-sensitive traffic, but it does not guarantee a particular speed, bandwidth, or uninterrupted connection.
What WME means
WME stands for Wireless Multimedia Extensions. It refers to the Wi-Fi QoS feature more commonly called Wi-Fi Multimedia, or WMM. Microsoft’s Wi-Fi driver documentation describes WMM as formerly known as WME and lists it among Wi-Fi QoS protocol values. Microsoft Learn
QoS means quality of service. In this context, it is differentiated handling of network traffic: Wi-Fi equipment can give some kinds of data a higher chance of accessing the wireless medium than others.

How WME/WMM prioritizes Wi-Fi traffic
WMM groups traffic into four access categories, from time-sensitive voice and video to best-effort and background data:

This prioritization can help real-time traffic compete for access when several devices or applications share Wi-Fi. It does not add radio capacity or reserve a fixed amount of bandwidth. WME, WMM, and IEEE 802.11e
- WME: Wireless Multimedia Extensions, an alternate or former name.
- WMM: Wi-Fi Multimedia, the more commonly used name in current vendor documentation.
- IEEE 802.11e: The Wi-Fi QoS work associated with the WMM interoperability certification; WME/WMM is not a Wi-Fi radio band.
These labels may appear in router, access point, or driver documentation. Seeing WMM or WME indicates a traffic-prioritization capability, not a separate wireless network or frequency.

What WME does not guarantee
WMM changes the relative priority with which traffic competes for Wi-Fi access. It cannot ensure a particular throughput, eliminate congestion, or promise uninterrupted calls or video. Performance still depends on available capacity and network conditions. The feature is therefore best understood as traffic management, not a speed upgrade.
