Short answer: wkhtmltoimage’s documented image settings do not provide an option to select an ICC color profile. The official documentation also does not specify whether a particular build honors embedded profiles in input images, converts colors in a defined way, or embeds a profile in its output. If color accuracy matters, test the exact executable and output format you use rather than assuming every build behaves alike.

What wkhtmltoimage documents about color

wkhtmltoimage renders HTML to image formats using the Qt WebKit rendering engine and is designed to run without a display service. That describes its rendering setup; it does not establish which color-management steps occur during rendering.

The published image settings cover output and capture controls, including format, transparency, screen width, smart width, and JPEG quality. The documented image settings do not list an ICC-profile selector. In practical terms, there is no documented image option to tell wkhtmltoimage to use a named ICC profile.

This is narrower than saying wkhtmltoimage has no color management internally. The documentation does not establish how a given build interprets embedded profiles in source images, what color space it uses during rasterization and compositing, or whether the resulting file has a profile embedded or stripped. Those details remain unspecified in the official settings information.

What an ICC profile does—and what the documentation does not promise

An ICC profile describes a color space or device characterization used in color-managed workflows. The International Color Consortium publishes profile specifications and developer resources, but those standards do not imply that a particular renderer implements profile selection or conversion.

For wkhtmltoimage, the key distinction is between a documented command-line control and behavior that might occur inside a particular package. The official image settings document formats such as JPG, PNG, BMP, and SVG, plus image-output options, but do not promise that embedded source profiles are honored, converted, preserved, or removed.

The project documentation also lists a colorMode setting for PDF output, with Color and Grayscale choices. That is a PDF setting, not an ICC-profile option for wkhtmltoimage image captures, and it should not be used as evidence that the image renderer supports profile selection.

Why different builds should be tested separately

The project describes wkhtmltoimage as using Qt WebKit and distributes precompiled binaries as well as source builds. That does not identify a single Qt version or color-management implementation for every executable a user may have installed. A newer Qt API cannot safely be treated as proof of behavior in an older or custom wkhtmltoimage package.

For example, Qt 6.5.12 documents QColorSpace::fromIccProfile for parsing a restricted class of three-component matrix-based RGB-XYZ ICC profiles; unsupported profiles can produce an invalid color space. This is useful context about that Qt API only. It does not establish that a wkhtmltoimage binary bundles Qt 6, uses that API, or follows its behavior.

Accordingly, treat profile interpretation and output metadata as properties to verify for your executable, package, and output format—not as guarantees shared by all wkhtmltoimage installations.

How to diagnose a color mismatch

Use a controlled test that separates renderer behavior from image compression and viewer differences. Keep the executable, inputs, settings, and viewing conditions fixed while changing one variable at a time.

  1. Identify the exact executable. Run wkhtmltoimage --version and record the complete output. Note how the binary was installed or built and, where available, its package and dependency details.
  2. Create a small repeatable fixture. Make a minimal HTML page with flat CSS color swatches and a small number of source images whose profile metadata you know. Avoid unrelated page styling or dynamic content that could make captures differ.
  3. Render PNG first. Use PNG to avoid JPEG compression as an additional variable. The documented formats include PNG, and the image settings also document JPEG quality for JPEG output.
  4. Inspect pixels and metadata. Use a color-managed image tool to inspect the rendered pixels and separately check whether the output file contains profile metadata. These answer different questions: how pixel values compare, and what color-space information accompanies them.
  5. Compare in consistent conditions. View the browser reference and rendered output in the same color-managed viewer, on the same display, with the same relevant display settings. A visual comparison across different viewers or displays may introduce differences unrelated to wkhtmltoimage.
  6. Change one source-image variable. Repeat with an untagged image or one explicitly converted to sRGB. If the mismatch changes or shrinks, record that as an observation for the tested build and fixture; it is not a universal rule for wkhtmltoimage.
  7. Test JPEG separately. Once the PNG comparison is understood, render JPEG with a fixed quality value and compare it with the PNG. This isolates compression and output-format differences from the first test.

Keep the version output, package or build identity, fixture, source assets, command, output format, JPEG quality where relevant, viewer, and metadata-inspection result with the test. That record makes the result reproducible after a package or dependency change.

Which settings can affect a repeatable capture

The documented image settings let you control several capture variables, but they are not color-profile controls. For a useful comparison, make these choices explicit and keep them constant between runs:

  • Output format: select the same documented image format for each run. Start with PNG when you want to avoid JPEG compression as a variable.
  • JPEG quality: when testing JPEG, set a fixed quality rather than allowing it to vary between commands.
  • Transparency: keep the documented transparency setting consistent; a different background or compositing result can affect the appearance of translucent content.
  • Screen width and smart width: hold these capture dimensions and sizing choices constant so layout changes do not alter which pixels are being compared.

These controls help stabilize the rendering experiment. None selects an ICC profile, and none by itself establishes how a build handles profile metadata.

For color-critical output, control the inputs

If the workflow requires known color transforms, convert source assets into the required color space before rendering with a tool that explicitly documents ICC conversion. Then inspect the wkhtmltoimage output again in the intended color-managed viewer, including its embedded profile metadata.

Preprocessing makes the input state more deliberate; it still does not prove that wkhtmltoimage embeds, preserves, or converts an output profile. If a downstream system requires specific metadata, verify that requirement on the generated file rather than inferring it from the source images.

Troubleshooting common color-profile questions

Can I pass an ICC profile to wkhtmltoimage?

The official image-settings reference does not document an ICC-profile selection parameter. Do not assume a flag exists based on PDF color settings or on capabilities documented for a different Qt version.

Does wkhtmltoimage honor embedded profiles in JPEG or PNG inputs?

The official sources described here do not specify whether embedded profiles are honored during image decoding. Test a known tagged source image against an untagged or explicitly converted version using the exact executable in your workflow.

Does the output include an ICC profile?

The image settings do not promise that an output profile is embedded, stripped, or converted. Inspect the generated file’s metadata for each format and build you rely on.

Why does the screenshot look different from the browser?

First make the comparison repeatable: pin the executable, page fixture, assets, output format, and JPEG quality; then view both results in the same color-managed viewer. Check source-image profile state and output metadata independently. The documentation does not identify a single color-handling explanation that applies to every build.

Can Qt 6 documentation tell me what my wkhtmltoimage binary does?

No. Qt 6.5.12 documents behavior of its own QColorSpace API, while the wkhtmltoimage project describes a Qt WebKit renderer without establishing that a given binary uses that Qt version or API.

Or skip the browser setup

If the job is simply to capture a webpage rather than to investigate wkhtmltoimage’s color pipeline, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single request returns a screenshot; it is not a substitute for ICC profile selection or a guarantee of a particular color transform. Its capture flow removes cookie/consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot, with each step able to be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server exposes screenshot tools for AI agents.

For API parameters and options, see the ScreenshotNeo documentation. Example cURL request:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Equivalent Python:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Equivalent Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
