A wireless system-on-chip (SoC) can bring application processing and radio capabilities together, but integration alone does not ensure dependable connectivity. A successful design still depends on choosing protocols for the product’s network role, managing radios that share spectrum, and validating the board, antenna, software, security, and enclosure as a complete system.
What a wireless SoC does—and what it does not solve
A wireless SoC combines processing with one or more radio capabilities in a component intended for a connected product. This can simplify the hardware architecture, but the product still needs suitable protocol stacks, radio scheduling where radios operate near one another, an effective RF and antenna implementation, and testing in its intended environment.
Think of integration as a way to bring capabilities into one design, not as a guarantee that those capabilities will work well together. The right choice depends on the product’s traffic, network role, power budget, physical constraints, and deployment market. The sources available here do not establish a universal ranking or a model-by-model performance comparison.
Why multiple radios can interfere with one another
Compact hubs and gateways may place several radios in close proximity, often including multiple radios in the 2.4 GHz band. Their transmissions can compete for spectrum, and higher throughput or transmit power can make coexistence more difficult. Silicon Labs describes this challenge for multi-radio products (Silicon Labs’ Wi-Fi coexistence application note).

Coexistence is both a radio-environment problem and a scheduling problem: one radio’s activity can affect another’s opportunity to transmit or receive. A product that supports several protocols therefore still needs a way to manage their simultaneous or competing activity.
How packet traffic arbitration helps
Packet traffic arbitration (PTA) coordinates access among collocated radios. A radio can signal that it wants to transmit or receive; another radio can then be asked to wait. Depending on the implementation, signaling uses request, grant, and priority lines. This can reduce collisions between radios in the same device, but it does not create more spectrum or guarantee that every radio receives equal access.

Arbitration policy matters. Espressif documents one-, two-, and three-wire external coexistence arrangements for Wi-Fi with Bluetooth and IEEE 802.15.4 radios. It cautions that priority must be selected carefully: a policy that always yields to a peer can compromise Wi-Fi performance (Espressif’s coexistence guide). The system designer must consider which traffic is most sensitive to delay or interruption rather than assuming one fixed policy is right for every product.
Choose protocols by network role, not by a universal ranking
Different protocols address different network needs, so several may have roles in the same product rather than being direct substitutes. For example, Thread is an IP-based mesh networking technology built on IEEE 802.15.4. Microchip explains that Thread’s native IPv6 addressing can simplify links to other IP interfaces, such as Wi-Fi or Ethernet (Microchip’s Thread overview).

When evaluating a design, first identify what each connection must do: connect directly to a local network, form a mesh, carry high-throughput traffic, or bridge devices using different network technologies. Then check whether the candidate SoC and its software support the required protocols and the needed combinations of radios. Protocol support on a specification sheet does not, by itself, establish that every radio can operate simultaneously or meet the product’s performance requirements.
Interoperability and coexistence guidance keep evolving
Coexistence is also addressed through standards and industry coordination, but the scope of each effort matters. IEEE material describes recommended coexistence practices for 802.11 and 802.15.4 systems in sub-1 GHz bands (IEEE 802.19.3 information). Separately, Wi-Fi Alliance and Bluetooth SIG announced joint work on coexistence on 19 June 2026, initially focused on 6 GHz (the joint announcement). These are distinct scopes: the IEEE material cited here concerns sub-1 GHz systems, while the announced initiative begins with 6 GHz.

In that announcement, Wi-Fi Alliance President and CEO Kevin Robinson described Wi-Fi and Bluetooth as collectively shipping nearly 10 billion devices per year. That is an attributed industry statement, not an independent measurement presented here. More broadly, standards and industry work can inform design decisions, but they do not replace testing the particular radios, firmware, board, and antenna in the intended product.

These are comparison criteria, not ratings established by a common independent benchmark. Use current product documentation and measurements under the intended conditions before drawing conclusions about a specific part.
Prototype and validate the complete device
Development hardware and RF tools can help expose design issues before a product is finalized, but a development setup cannot substitute for validation in the final device and use environment. Silicon Labs describes a Wi-Fi Coexistence Development Kit backplane that can connect a Wi-Fi solution and up to three Silicon Labs radios, including Zigbee, Thread, and Bluetooth, using PTA (Silicon Labs’ Wi-Fi Coexistence Development Kit). Microchip describes its Windows-based MCPRT3 radio test tool for RF configuration during development, certification, and production (Microchip’s MCPRT3 tool).
Use prototyping to examine the radio combinations and configuration that matter to the design, then validate the implementation with the intended board, antenna, enclosure, firmware, and deployment conditions. A favorable result in one setup does not establish performance across different layouts, traffic patterns, or environments.
