Windows estimates your device’s location using signals such as GPS, nearby Wi-Fi networks, cell towers and your IP address. Which signals are available—and how reliable they are—depends on your device and surroundings. You can review location access in Windows 11 at Settings > Privacy & security > Location.
How Windows estimates your location
Windows can combine several kinds of information to estimate where a device is. It does not necessarily use every source on every PC, and the result is not always an exact address. Microsoft says accuracy depends on the device’s capabilities and the signals available.
- GPS: A device with GPS hardware and a usable signal can use it to determine location. Microsoft does not publish a universal accuracy range.
- Nearby Wi-Fi access points and routers: Nearby wireless infrastructure can help estimate location, including on devices without GPS. Microsoft says its location database may include router and neighboring network-device MAC addresses.
- Cell towers: Cellular network information can contribute to an estimate. A mobile operator may also have access to a device’s location while it is using cellular service.
- IP address: An IP address can provide location context or contribute to an estimate. Websites may also estimate location from IP independently of Windows Location services.
- Default location: You can set a location for Windows and apps to use when a more precise location is unavailable. Microsoft recommends this option for desktop PCs and devices without Wi-Fi.

What Windows location settings control
On Windows 11, open Settings > Privacy & security > Location. The controls distinguish device-wide location access from access granted to individual apps. The page also provides recent-use information and a setting for a default location.

- Location services: A device administrator can turn the Windows location service on or off for the device.
- App access: Where available, you can control whether apps may access location and manage individual app access to precise location.
- Default location: Set a fallback location for Windows and apps to use when a more exact location cannot be detected.
Windows app privacy controls do not necessarily cover every desktop program. Microsoft notes that desktop apps may not appear in the standard per-app permission lists; review their privacy policies and install software from sources you trust. Why turning off Location services may not hide your location everywhere
Turning off Windows Location services blocks Windows and apps from accessing device location through that service. It does not prevent all location inference: a third-party app may use another method, and websites can estimate location from your IP address.

Microsoft Edge and website permission
Edge has a separate permission for websites. When Windows location access is available, Edge can share a location estimate with a site only after you allow that site to see your location. A site may still infer an approximate location from your IP address. Microsoft describes this handoff and the separate website permission in its Location and privacy in Microsoft Edge guidance.

What Microsoft says happens to location information
Microsoft says that when Location services is enabled, the device sends de-identified location information—such as wireless access-point, cellular-tower and GPS information when available—to improve Microsoft location services. Microsoft says it may share this information with its current service-provider partners HERE and Skyhook to improve their services.

If an app or feature uses location while you are signed in to a Microsoft account, your last-known location may also be saved to the cloud. Microsoft says other apps or services using that account may be able to access it when they have permission. You can view or clear account location activity through the Microsoft account privacy dashboard.
Location history changed in March 2025
Microsoft says local location-history storage and its related settings were removed in March 2025. Instructions that tell you to clear local history using the former Windows Location history setting are out of date. Cloud location activity can still be managed through the Microsoft account privacy dashboard.

Emergency calls are an exception
Microsoft says Windows will attempt to determine and share precise location whenever an emergency call is made, regardless of the ordinary location setting.
Windows 10 support status
Microsoft’s current support page states: “After October 14, 2025, Microsoft will no longer provide free software updates from Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10.” The cited location guidance covers both Windows 10 and Windows 11, but its Windows 11 settings path does not apply to Windows 10.
