WebdriverIO uses element selectors through its $ and $$ query commands. CSS is the default; XPath and WebdriverIO-specific forms such as exact text and accessible-name selectors are also available. “Selenium locators” is a useful shorthand for WebDriver’s element-location strategies, but not every WebdriverIO selector form is a separate protocol-level strategy.

How WebdriverIO uses Selenium locators

WebdriverIO’s $ command queries for one element, while $$ queries for matching elements. They are its convenient element-query APIs, built around the element-finding capabilities of the WebDriver protocol. WebdriverIO’s official WebDriver Protocol reference documents the underlying find-element commands; its selector guide recommends $ and $$ for ordinary use.

The word “selector” covers both standard locator strategies, such as CSS and XPath, and WebdriverIO-level syntax that the framework interprets. Do not assume every selector prefix is itself a standard Selenium or WebDriver strategy.

Common WebdriverIO selector forms

What you need Example What to know
CSS selector (default) $('#someid') When no other strategy is indicated, WebdriverIO uses CSS.
XPath $('//*[@id="someid"]') Use an XPath expression explicitly when it suits the element relationship or condition.
Exact visible text $('button=Submit') WebdriverIO text syntax can target exact user-facing text. A copy or translation change can break it.
Partial link text $('*=driver') This WebdriverIO form matches partial link text.
Accessible name $('aria/Submit') Targets an accessible name; its behavior depends on session capabilities, as described below.
Test attribute $('[data-testid="submit"]') A purposeful test hook can remain stable when visual styling changes.

How to find an element by ID

For browser automation, select an element with an ID using CSS or XPath. A general id locator strategy is not provided by the WebDriver protocol, although some drivers, including certain Appium drivers, may support an ID form.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • CSS: $('#someid')
  • XPath: $('//*[@id="someid"]')
  • id=someid: use only when the selected driver explicitly supports that locator strategy.

Choosing a reliable selector

Prefer a selector that communicates the element’s purpose and is unlikely to change during an ordinary redesign. WebdriverIO’s selector guidance warns against generic tags and styling-coupled classes, and gives button and .btn.btn-large as poor choices in its example. A deliberate test attribute or an appropriate semantic selector is generally more maintainable.

  • Use a test attribute such as [data-testid="submit"] when the test needs a stable hook independent of styling.
  • Use an accessible name such as aria/Submit when the accessible control name is meaningful to the test.
  • Use exact visible text such as button=Submit when verifying the wording or targeting the same label a user sees. If the interface is translated, use the relevant translation files or another stable selector so localization does not make the test brittle.
  • Avoid broad or presentation-dependent matches unless they are genuinely what the test needs to validate.

There is no universally fastest selector established by the documented guidance. Choose based on intent, stability, session behavior, and driver support rather than assuming one form always wins.

Session and platform differences that affect selectors

Accessible-name queries

In WebDriver BiDi sessions, WebdriverIO uses an accessibility locator against the browser’s accessibility tree for aria/ queries. In Classic sessions, it uses a heuristic XPath fallback. This distinction is documented in the current selector guide; the mechanism is not identical across session types.

Shadow DOM

WebdriverIO v9 automatically pierces shadow DOM. The older >>> deep-selector workaround is unnecessary in v9. If you maintain tests on another version, check that version’s selector documentation rather than assuming v9 behavior applies.

Mobile automation

WebdriverIO documents mobile selector strategies, but some depend on Appium or a compatible driver and platform. Treat iOS- or Android-specific forms as driver-specific, not as general browser WebDriver locator strategies.

Keep element queries maintainable

WebdriverIO’s Best Practices guide recommends resilient selectors and limiting repeated element queries where possible. In practice, choose the selector that expresses the test’s intent, and avoid repeatedly querying the same DOM target without a reason. This improves clarity and can reduce unnecessary lookup work; it does not guarantee a particular runtime improvement.

If you need a website screenshot rather than an interactive WebdriverIO test, ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request can return an image or PDF. For example, using cURL:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for the API details. Before capture, it accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of these steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
