Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

These stages overlap: a browser can begin rendering before every resource has loaded, and JavaScript or later downloads can change the result. Understanding that sequence helps explain loading behavior, script placement, rendering delays, and interaction performance.
1. Navigation starts the browser and network work
A navigation begins when a user enters a URL, follows a link, or triggers another navigation action. In Chrome, the browser process coordinates navigation; its network thread handles network work such as DNS lookup and TLS setup. More generally, a client resolves a host, establishes or reuses a network connection, and sends HTTP requests to a server. The exact path depends on factors such as the protocol version and whether a connection can be reused, so a simplified connection diagram should not be read as a universal timing promise.
The server’s response may contain an HTML document. That document can refer to CSS, JavaScript, images, fonts, video, and other resources, which can lead to additional requests. Browsers process resources as they arrive rather than waiting for every byte of every asset before doing any page work.
What this means for developers
- When first rendering matters, make the initial document and critical styles available promptly.
- Identify which resources delay parsing, style calculation, or visible content; not every download has the same effect on the page.
- Do not assume every navigation requires the same DNS, transport, or security setup. Existing connections, caching, and protocol details can change the sequence.
2. HTML and CSS become structures the browser can use
The HTML parser turns markup into the Document Object Model (DOM), a structured representation of the document that scripts can inspect and modify through browser APIs. The CSS parser turns stylesheets into rules. These rules are combined with document structure to determine the computed styles applied to elements; this style representation is often called the CSS Object Model (CSSOM).

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The DOM and CSSOM are useful ways to reason about browser work, but they are not the final pixels. The browser must determine which styles apply, calculate element geometry, and produce content for display. As additional markup, styles, or scripts arrive, the relevant representations and visible result can change.
3. JavaScript can pause parsing or change the page
Scripts can read and change document state, so their execution can affect subsequent rendering. A classic script encountered during HTML parsing can pause the parser while the browser fetches and executes it. That pause matters when the script is slow or when it must run before the parser can safely continue.

Choose script attributes for the dependency you have
- No attribute: A classic external script is parser-blocking when encountered: the parser waits for its fetch and execution before continuing.
async: The script is fetched without pausing HTML parsing, then executes as soon as it is ready. Its execution order is not guaranteed to match document order. Use it when the script is independent of other scripts and can run whenever it arrives.defer: The script is fetched while parsing continues and executes after parsing is complete. Deferred classic scripts preserve document order. Use it when code needs the parsed document or when ordering between deferred scripts matters.
Neither attribute is automatically faster in every situation. The right choice depends on whether the script depends on the DOM, on other scripts, or on a particular execution order.
4. Rendering turns document state into a visible result
A useful model of rendering has four stages: style calculation, layout, paint, and compositing. The browser calculates the styles that apply, works out element positions and dimensions, produces drawing instructions or visual content, and combines visual layers for display. The model describes kinds of work, not a mandatory all-or-nothing pass after all downloads finish.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
What each stage does
- Style calculation: Resolves applicable CSS rules into computed presentation for elements.
- Layout: Determines geometry, such as element sizes and positions, based on document structure and styling.
- Paint: Produces the visual content or drawing instructions for the page.
- Compositing: Combines layers into the displayed result.
Updates do not necessarily require every stage. A change that affects geometry may require layout and later work; another change may need less. Engines can skip or reorganize work when the update permits it. This is why “the browser renders the page once everything has loaded” is a misleading mental model: visible content can appear progressively, and later work can update it.
5. The main thread affects responsiveness
Parsing, script execution, and other browser tasks compete for processing time. If JavaScript occupies the main thread with a long-running task, the browser has less opportunity to respond promptly to input and perform other main-thread work. A page may look loaded yet still feel unresponsive while such work is running.

Web workers can move suitable computation off the main thread, but they do not remove the need to coordinate results with the page or eliminate rendering costs. When diagnosing a slow or unresponsive page, consider both what is delaying the first visible result and what is occupying the main thread after that result appears.

Chromium documentation describes browser, renderer, and Viz components as parts of its implementation. Its rendering work is distributed across components, processes, and threads. Chromium’s multi-process design aims to support reliability and security isolation, but process assignment and boundaries can vary with platform, version, and resource constraints.

Those names are not a universal architecture required of every browser. Standards describe web-platform behavior; engine documentation explains how a particular browser implements it. The HTML Standard describes matters such as navigation and session history, while Chromium’s Blink and RenderingNG documentation explains Chromium-specific machinery. Browser engines can differ in scheduling, process organization, and which stages are needed for an update.
7. A practical way to reason about a slow page
- Separate navigation from rendering. Ask whether the delay is before the document response, during resource delivery, or after content has begun arriving.
- Check dependencies. Identify whether styles or scripts are delaying later work, and whether scripts genuinely need parser-blocking behavior.
- Look at progressive content. Determine which parts can render before all images, media, or other noncritical resources finish loading.
- Inspect main-thread work. Look for long tasks that can delay input handling or subsequent rendering.
- Account for the engine. Treat process and thread diagrams as implementation details, and test behavior in the browsers your site needs to support.

If you need a clean screenshot of the rendered page without setting up a local browser capture workflow, ScreenshotNeo takes a URL in one request. For example, using cURL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. It accepts cookie and consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides screenshot and page-information tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 shots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Learn about ScreenshotNeo, or sign up free for 1,000 screenshots a month with no card.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the browser wait for every image before showing a page?
No. Browsers can process resources and begin rendering as they arrive; images and other resources may finish later.
Are the browser, renderer, and Viz processes present in every browser?
No. Those are Chromium architecture terms. Other engines can organize and schedule work differently.
