Channel membership can provide the queue’s shared work context and, in Microsoft’s original rollout description, could be synchronized with its agent roster. The feature is a Teams software configuration; the cited documentation does not establish that a physical phone or headset is required.
What Voice-Enabled Channels do
A call queue distributes incoming calls to agents. With Voice-Enabled Channels, an organization configures call answering to use a particular Team and channel, connecting the queue with a space where its members can collaborate. Microsoft described the purpose as enabling “collaboration and information sharing before, during, and after the call” in its December 1, 2020 Teams calling announcement.
Microsoft gave IT and HR help desks as examples: team members could answer calls while sharing relevant information, such as service-ticket details, in the channel. The channel is the collaborative context around the call queue, rather than a separate physical phone system.
What agents could see in the original rollout
Microsoft’s March 2021 rollout notice described channel members being synchronized as the call queue’s agents and receiving a dedicated Calls tab in the Teams desktop client. The notice said the tab could show queue call history, agent opt-in status, and shared voicemail if the queue was configured with it. These are details from the historical rollout announcement, not a guarantee that every tenant’s current interface or settings are identical.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A 2021 Microsoft Community Hub article on advanced calling additionally described agents signing in or out of the queue from the channel, seeing which other agents were signed in, and placing outgoing calls as the queue so recipients would see the queue number rather than an agent’s personal number. Treat these as reported capabilities, and check your tenant’s current behavior before relying on them.
How channel-linked and manually configured queues differ
Microsoft’s rollout notice described automatic agent configuration for a channel-linked queue and retained manual agent configuration as an option. The main distinction is how the agent roster is managed and where agents work together; the rollout notice said existing queues would not be affected.

| Area | Channel-linked queue | Manually configured queue |
|---|---|---|
| Agent roster | Channel membership was described as synchronized with the queue’s agents in Microsoft’s March 2021 rollout notice. | Agents are configured manually, according to the same rollout notice. |
| Collaboration context | Agents share a Team channel for work related to calls; Microsoft’s feature announcement cited service-ticket information as an example. | The cited rollout material does not specify an equivalent channel-based collaboration context. |
| Call history, opt-in and voicemail | The original rollout described these in a Teams desktop Calls tab; shared voicemail depended on queue configuration. | The cited rollout material does not establish the same channel Calls tab experience for manually configured queues. |
Configuration and current availability
Microsoft’s March 2021 rollout notice said the feature was off by default and described choosing Automatic agent configuration when setting up a new or existing call queue. It also said no action was needed unless an organization wanted to configure the feature. Those are historical instructions; confirm the current Teams Admin Center labels, availability, and behavior in your tenant before making configuration changes.
Microsoft Learn currently uses both “Voice-Enabled Channels” and “Collaborative Calling” for call answering configured to use a Team and channel in its supported-configurations reference. The cited passage confirms the terminology but does not establish the complete current setup procedure, licensing combination, cloud availability, or tenant prerequisites. Check current Microsoft documentation and your organization’s admin settings for those specifics.

Do you need a phone or headset?
The feature described here is a call-queue and channel configuration in Teams. The documentation cited for Voice-Enabled Channels does not say that a physical phone, headset, or other hardware is required. Microsoft’s separate Teams Phones deployment-planning guidance treats phones as device choices for particular spaces; it does not establish them as a prerequisite for this feature.

A channel-connected queue can suit a team that wants shared call handling alongside its channel collaboration. The 2021 Microsoft Community Hub article points to needs such as CRM integration, detailed statistics, or delegated administration as reasons an organization might evaluate third-party calling systems. Those are possible decision criteria, not proof that a particular provider offers them or that every organization needs a separate system.
