A codec encodes the video into a compact stream; a compatible decoder reconstructs it for playback. The trade-off is that stronger compression can mean smaller files but lower visual fidelity.
What video compression does
A video is a timed sequence of still images, or frames, displayed rapidly. A single 4K frame contains about 8 million pixels and, as an uncompressed example, can be approximately 25 MB; MDN notes that an hour of uncompressed 4K video would exceed 3 TB. These are explanatory approximations, not estimates of a compressed file’s size. Compression makes video practical by reducing how much image data must be stored or transmitted.
An encoder compresses the video into a stream. A compatible decoder expands that stream into frames for display. Compression can be lossy or lossless, and most delivery video uses lossy compression to reduce file size.
How compression saves data
It simplifies detail within each frame
Images contain fine detail that may be less noticeable to viewers than large shapes, edges, or colors. A lossy encoder can discard or simplify some high-frequency detail, then represent the remaining image more efficiently. The more aggressively it does this, the smaller the data may become, but the greater the risk of visible artifacts such as softness, blockiness, or distracting changes around edges.

It reuses information between frames
Neighboring frames often show the same scene with only some objects moving. Instead of storing every frame as a complete image, an encoder can store a fuller reference picture and describe later frames as predictions from earlier or later reference frames, plus the differences, or residuals.
Key or intra-coded frames provide fuller reference pictures; predicted and delta frames encode changes. This interframe compression saves data when scenes are similar. It also means seeking and recovering after errors can depend on reference points: a player may need to decode from an earlier key frame before it can show a requested frame.

It encodes the remaining data efficiently
After prediction and other choices such as quantization, lossless entropy coding represents the remaining symbols compactly. “Lossless” describes this coding stage, not necessarily the whole video: if an earlier stage discarded image information, entropy coding cannot restore it.
What affects size and visual quality
There is no single setting that determines the result. The IETF’s RFC 9317 says bitrate selection depends on resolution, frame rate, color depth, codec, encoding parameters, scene complexity, and motion. In practical terms, fast action, detailed textures, and image noise are harder to compress than a relatively still, simple scene at the same bitrate.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Bitrate: The data allocated per second. A higher bitrate generally allows more visual information and creates a larger file, but bitrate alone does not guarantee better quality.
- Resolution: More pixels per frame usually require more data to preserve comparable detail.
- Frame rate: More frames per second usually require more data. Preserve the source frame rate unless there is a clear reason to change it.
- Codec and encoder settings: Coding methods, profiles, encoder choices, and hardware support affect compatibility, speed, and output.
- Lossy versus lossless: Lossy compression accepts some deviation from the source to make delivery files smaller. Lossless compression preserves the source on decoding, but typically produces much larger files.
Codec and container are different
A codec specifies how video is encoded and decoded. H.264/AVC, HEVC/H.265, VP9, and AV1 are video codecs. A container packages one or more encoded streams with metadata: MP4, WebM, and MKV are containers. Because a container can hold streams encoded with different codecs, an “.mp4” filename extension does not tell you exactly how its video was compressed. Playback requires a player that understands both the container and the selected codec.
Choosing a codec for a destination
Choose for the actual workflow rather than assuming one codec is always smallest or best. YouTube’s upload guidance recommends H.264 for its specified workflow. Vimeo describes H.265/HEVC as offering a smaller file with high visual quality at the cost of longer encoding time. The Alliance for Open Media describes AV1 as an open codec designed for efficient compression and high-resolution adaptive streaming and HDR use. These descriptions are not guarantees: results depend on the encoder implementation, settings, content, and device support.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
When comparing options, consider compatibility with the intended playback devices, visual quality at the bitrate you can use, encoding time and compute cost, and decoder support. Encoding can require substantially more computation than decoding, so a codec that is efficient for delivery may take longer or more processing power to create.

The RFC’s cited table gives no H.264 4K value in that row, so none is inferred here. YouTube’s figures are for its SDR upload workflow, not a universal viewing requirement; its guidance distinguishes SDR from HDR. YouTube also recommends uploading at the recorded frame rate and specifies H.264, progressive scan, and 4:2:0 chroma subsampling in its upload settings. Vimeo recommends variable bitrate when available. The differences among these figures show why a bitrate should be tied to its platform and purpose.
Common questions and practical checks
Does compressing a video reduce quality?
Lossy compression can reduce quality because it discards or approximates image information. Whether that loss is noticeable depends on how much compression is applied, the content, and the viewing conditions. Lossless compression preserves the source on decoding, but its larger files may be less convenient to store or deliver.
Why is a compressed file still large?
High resolution, a high frame rate, complex movement, fine detail, noise, or a generous bitrate can all increase data requirements. The codec and its settings also matter. A container such as MP4 does not by itself make video more or less compressed.
How do I make a sensible first export?
- Identify the platform or player where the video will be used, and check its current upload or playback requirements.
- Keep the source resolution and frame rate unless the destination or your use case gives you a reason to change them.
- Choose a supported codec and container; do not rely on the filename extension alone to determine compatibility.
- Use the destination’s bitrate guidance as a starting point, not as a promise of quality or a universal target.
- Review the encoded file for artifacts and playback compatibility, especially in fast-moving or highly detailed scenes.
