Ukraine’s Logika Design Bureau has developed Chaharnyk, an active barrier designed to detect nearby FPV drones by sound and physically sever their fiber-optic control cables. Radio jamming cannot break a fiber tether, but the barrier’s reported deliveries and demonstration results do not yet establish how reliably it performs in combat.

How does the Chaharnyk barrier work?

Chaharnyk combines acoustic detection with a moving mechanical obstacle. Logika says the system listens for the motor and propeller sounds of approaching FPV drones. When it detects a nearby aircraft, electric motors pull hooked wires through a cutting zone, where the drone’s fiber-optic tether can be caught and severed. RFE/RL described the structure as approximately 80 centimeters high.

The target is the physical control link, not the drone’s radio signal. A fiber-optic drone carries commands through a cable rather than relying on a conventional radio link, so electronic-warfare measures that disrupt radio communications do not cut that tether. Chaharnyk aims to interrupt control by breaking the cable.

Cutting a tether does not, by itself, prove that every affected drone will crash. The public descriptions also do not establish that the acoustic sensor will detect every approaching aircraft or that the mechanism will engage successfully in all conditions.

What is known about deployment and performance?

On October 1, 2026, RFE/RL reported that a Logika representative said dozens of systems had been delivered to frontline Ukrainian units in recent days. The quantity is an attributed delivery report, not an independently audited total.

RFE/RL also reported that the manufacturer claimed 95% cable-severing success in demonstrations, where tethers were snagged on hooks and pulled through a cutter. That figure describes the maker’s demonstration claim, not a verified battlefield success rate. The representative said it was still too early to discuss official feedback or statistics from the field.

Logika’s public website lists testing parameters including cable capture, mechanical disruption, drive reliability, terrain operation, response time and weather resistance. It does not publish results for those tests. The public information therefore describes the intended mechanism and some test categories, but does not provide independent field-performance statistics.

How is Chaharnyk different from other anti-drone barriers?

Physical barriers are one response to fiber-optic drones, but not every wire or net installation is the same system. The distinctions matter: Chaharnyk is described as an active, sensor-triggered mechanism, while other measures are passive or use different constructions.

Measure How it is described What public information establishes
Chaharnyk Acoustic detection followed by moving hooked wires and a cutting zone aimed at severing a tether. Logika describes its design and testing parameters; RFE/RL reported attributed deliveries and the manufacturer’s demonstration claim. Official field-performance statistics were not available in that report.
Earlier wire barriers IFRI’s 2026 analysis describes Ukrainian units installing rotating barriers made from barbed or razor wire to damage or sever cables. The analysis provides context for physical countermeasures; it does not establish that those barriers were Chaharnyk or had its acoustic detection and moving mechanism.
Road anti-drone nets Passive nets installed over roads as protection against drones. Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence reported that the State Special Transport Service installed 534 km of nets along roads in seven oblasts during 2025. This is a separate program, not a Chaharnyk deployment figure.

What are the potential operational limits?

Chaharnyk must detect a drone and bring its moving mechanism into the tether’s path. The public descriptions do not establish how performance varies with terrain, weather, approach direction or other battlefield conditions. Logika lists several of those areas among its test parameters but does not publish the results.

There are also placement trade-offs. James Patton Rogers, co-director of King’s College London’s Future Threat Lab, told RFE/RL that a barrier could itself be vulnerable to attack and could obstruct Ukrainian movement depending on where it is installed. He suggested it might have a role alongside other counter-drone technology around frontline areas, villages and key sites. These are expert concerns and a proposed use, not reported outcomes from deployment.

What should readers conclude from the rollout report?

Chaharnyk is a specialized engineering barrier intended to counter fiber-optic FPVs by breaking their physical control cables—an approach that addresses a limitation of radio-focused electronic warfare. The reported deliveries indicate that systems reached frontline units, but the available account does not establish battlefield effectiveness. Until official field statistics are available, the demonstration claim should not be treated as proof of combat performance.
