The Air Alert app relays official alerts for an area a user selects; it is not presented as a weapon-detection tool. When an alert sounds or arrives, follow local civil-protection instructions and move to cover rather than relying on a map or waiting for more evidence.
How an alert reaches the public
Ukraine’s Cabinet of Ministers announced the Air Alert app on 1 March 2022. At launch, the government said it would notify users when an alert started or ended in a region they selected, receiving alert information from regional administrations. The notice described the app as one part of a wider warning system: its notifications complemented external warnings, including public sirens in cities. Read the Cabinet’s launch announcement.
In practical terms, the app relays an area’s alert status to a phone. Government descriptions do not say that the app independently detects incoming weapons. Nor do the public materials cited here explain the full military sensing, threat-assessment, authorization, or communications chain behind an alert. The app should therefore be understood as a public notification channel, not a live weapon-tracking system.
How to receive alerts for your area
Lviv Regional Military Administration’s guidance says users can select a region and notes that district and territorial-community options have been added. Available choices and settings may vary with location and app updates. The authority’s page uses the public-facing labels “Receive air raid notifications” and “How the app works.” See Lviv regional guidance.

- Select the area: In the Air Alert app, choose the region or more local area available for you.
- Allow notifications: Enable the app’s notifications on your device so it can relay alert and all-clear messages.
- Follow local instructions: When an alert is issued, act on it; do not treat an app setting, map display, or lack of a nearby siren as confirmation that it is safe.
The official Google Play listing identifies the app as “Повітряна тривога.” View the Google Play listing. App-store availability or a particular phone’s settings cannot guarantee that every notification will reach every user.
What district-specific alerts change
The Cabinet of Ministers announced a move toward district-specific notifications, developed with the State Emergency Service, Air Forces, and regional military administrations. Its announcement said district divisions had been implemented except in Donetsk and Luhansk regions, and that the first phase had been tested in 13 regions. The stated purpose was to make alerts more geographically precise, avoiding unnecessarily broad warnings where possible. The same announcement reported that alert time had been reduced by 50 days in Sumy region and by more than a month in some communities in Kharkiv region, attributing the figures to Deputy Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko. The government page does not define the measurement period or precisely what “alert time” means, and these figures are not an independently validated nationwide result.
What to do when an alert arrives
Follow local civil-protection instructions and move to cover when an alert is issued. Lviv Regional Military Administration advises people to remain in cover until the next siren signal indicating that the air raid has ended. Follow official local all-clear instructions; do not wait for explosions, consult unofficial reports before taking shelter, or infer an all-clear from silence. Review the regional instructions.

The app is an additional way to receive warnings, not a substitute for sirens or other official alerts. Keep the distinction clear: an alert channel communicates an authority’s warning for an area; a public map may display that status, but does not establish that danger has passed unless an official all-clear is issued.
How sirens, the app, and maps differ

The cited third-party listing is for Air Raid Map: Ukraine App. A map can help someone see public status, but the listing does not make it an official warning authority. No source cited here establishes that consumer-facing maps independently detect threats or that any channel has a particular reliability percentage or alert latency.

Why alerts affect daily routines
Alerts can interrupt ordinary activities as well as signal a need to seek cover. Associated Press reporting published on 4 September 2026 described interruptions to shopping, commuting, and business in Kyiv, alongside a shift toward attacks during daytime as well as at night. That account illustrates life in Kyiv at that time; it is not a nationwide survey or a measure of how often alerts occur across Ukraine. Read the Associated Press report.
