Replace the two instances of folder with your directory name and the archive name you want.
Zip a folder from the terminal

Open Terminal and change to the directory that contains the folder. For example, if the folder is in
Documents, runcd ~/Documents. -
Create the archive with
zip -r folder.zip folder. The-roption recursively includes the folder’s contents, including nested directories and dotfiles. Ubuntu documents this command pattern in its FileCompression guide; Debian’s zip(1) manual documents recursive traversal.
For example, to archive a directory named project as project.zip, run zip -r project.zip project. By default, archive entries retain paths relative to your current directory, so this command stores entries under the project/ directory prefix.

If the zip command is missing
If Terminal reports that zip is not found, install the package with sudo apt install zip, then run the archive command again. Debian documentation identifies zip as the utility and documents APT package installation syntax: Debian Reference: APT.
Archive behavior and useful variations
Using an archive name that already exists
If the ZIP file already exists, running the command with that same name updates it: matching entries are replaced and new entries are added. Use a different archive name if you want a separate archive instead.

Drop the folder paths
By default, the archive preserves relative paths. Debian’s zip(1) manual documents -j for storing files without their paths; use it when you want the files at the archive’s top level rather than under a folder prefix.
Extract the ZIP archive
To extract the archive into the current directory, run unzip folder.zip. Ubuntu’s FileCompression guide documents this basic extraction command.
