For large or ambiguous changes, ask for a plan and resolve consequential unknowns before implementation.
What should I include in a prompt for an AI coding agent?
Write the task so a person reviewing the resulting change can tell whether it solves the right problem and stayed within bounds. OpenAI’s Codex practice guide recommends structuring a prompt like a GitHub issue; that is useful guidance, not a guarantee that an agent will interpret every request correctly. OpenAI, “How OpenAI uses Codex”
Use this adaptable checklist, adding detail in proportion to the change:
- Problem and user: Who has the problem, and what can they not do today?
- Desired outcome: What should the user be able to do or observe after the change?
- In scope: Which behavior, screens, services, or components should change?
- Out of scope: What should remain untouched or be deferred?
- Scenarios and acceptance checks: What observable result should occur in normal, failure, and boundary cases?
- Constraints: Note only requirements that apply, such as compatibility, security, privacy, accessibility, performance, data handling, or architectural limits.
- Repository context: Point to relevant files and existing patterns rather than asking the agent to absorb the whole codebase.
- Verification: Name available tests, builds, or other checks, and ask for the commands run and results.
- Open decisions: Identify uncertainties that need a question or an explicit assumption before coding.
This is a practical synthesis of vendor guidance, not a specification standard required by any one product. A short, concrete issue can be enough for a small change; a sprawling feature needs more structure.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How do I turn a vague request into a specification?
Replace labels and subjective verbs with user-visible behavior. “Improve onboarding” does not say which user is blocked, what should change, or how anyone can judge completion. “Add account settings” identifies a feature area but not its expected behavior.
For example, a more actionable brief might say:
Problem: Signed-in users cannot review or change their notification preference.
Outcome: A signed-in user can view the current setting, save a supported preference, and receive clear feedback if saving fails.
Scope: Implement the settings screen and its existing service integration. Do not add notification channels or change account authentication.

Acceptance: The current value appears when the screen opens. A supported selection persists after saving and remains visible after reload. If the service fails, the prior value remains and an error is displayed.
Verification: Run the relevant settings tests and project build, then report the commands and results. Ask before changing the API if the existing service cannot support the specified behavior.
The example is illustrative, not a report about a tested application. Its value is that each requirement points to something observable, including a failure case and a boundary.
How do I write acceptance criteria for an AI coding agent?
Describe outcomes a reviewer can verify, not implementation steps unless the implementation itself is constrained. Where relevant, give examples of inputs and outputs, errors, and state changes. GitHub Spec Kit frames its approach as “Intent-driven development where specifications define the ‘what’ before the ‘how.’” GitHub Spec Kit concept page

There is no single mandatory acceptance-criteria syntax established by the cited guidance. A “Given / When / Then” format can help make a scenario explicit, but plain-language bullets are just as useful when they are unambiguous and checkable.
- Cover the expected path: State what happens with valid input or ordinary use.
- Include meaningful edges: Specify relevant empty, invalid, duplicate, or boundary inputs.
- Describe failure behavior: Say what the user sees and whether existing state or data should be preserved.
- Make scope testable: State what must not change when adjacent behavior is easy to alter accidentally.
A criterion such as “settings work correctly” only renames the feature. A reviewer needs a concrete result, such as a saved preference still appearing after reload.
Should I create an AGENTS.md file for my repository?
Use repository-level instructions for guidance that should apply repeatedly: coding conventions, project organization, and how to build or test the code. Put the current task’s requested change, acceptance behavior, boundaries, and specific constraints in its brief. OpenAI’s Codex repository guidance describes AGENTS.md as a way to convey project conventions and test instructions; OpenAI also recommends keeping repository guidance distinct from task prompts. OpenAI Codex repository guidance OpenAI, “How OpenAI uses Codex”
Keep persistent instructions accurate and focused. Repeating project-wide rules in every task adds clutter, but asking an agent to reread large amounts of repository context before each edit can also waste context. OpenAI’s developer guidance distinguishes task prompts, AGENTS.md files, and skills as different behavior-shaping inputs and cautions against redundant rereading. OpenAI Developers prompt guidance

Should the agent plan first or start coding?
Choose the process according to task size and uncertainty. The comparison below is a practical interpretation of vendor workflow guidance, not a measured ranking of outcomes.
| Approach | Best when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| One concise task brief | The change is small, localized, and its outcome is clear. | Quick to write and review; may not control a cross-cutting feature adequately. |
| Plan, then implement | The change is large or involves consequential architectural choices. | Adds a review step; OpenAI recommends beginning large changes with a plan. |
| Multi-stage specification and decomposition | The feature cannot stay coherent in one implementation cycle. | Can improve scope control, but creates additional artifacts and overhead. |
| Persistent repository instructions plus task brief | Project conventions recur across many tasks. | Avoids repeating context, but the shared instructions need maintenance. |
For a large change, ask the agent to outline its understanding, proposed approach, affected areas, and unresolved questions before it edits. Review that plan and settle high-impact choices first. GitHub Spec Kit describes a staged, intent-first approach, while its guidance also notes that breaking very large features into smaller specifications adds overhead. GitHub Spec Kit concept page GitHub Spec Kit, “Spec of Specs”
Decompose only when the work is too large to remain understandable and reviewable as one task. Each slice should have a coherent outcome and its own acceptance checks; otherwise, the extra coordination can cost more than it clarifies.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do I tell a coding agent when its task is done?
Make verification part of the brief. List the relevant commands or checks available in the project and request a concise report of what ran, what passed or failed, and what was not verified. Do not imply that checks ran if the agent could not run them.

GitHub says an agent is more likely to produce good pull requests when it can build, test, and validate changes in its development environment. That is GitHub’s product guidance, not an independently established success rate or guarantee. GitHub Docs, Copilot task best practices
Tests are evidence about the checks they cover, not proof that the change matches user intent. Inspect the resulting behavior and code, and keep a human review point before merging. GitHub’s agentic-workflow guidance likewise describes human review in the loop for that GitHub-specific workflow. GitHub Docs, agentic workflows
Common specification mistakes to avoid
- Using vague goals such as “modernize” or “make intuitive” without observable outcomes.
- Leaving out-of-scope behavior unstated when adjacent features or broad cleanup might be changed.
- Repeating permanent project conventions in every prompt instead of maintaining appropriate repository-level instructions.
- Writing acceptance checks that merely restate the feature name.
- Ignoring relevant failure behavior, compatibility, or data constraints.
- Demanding extensive up-front detail for a small change whose outcome is already clear.
- Treating a generated plan or passing tests as a substitute for reviewing whether the implementation meets the user’s need.
Official product documentation offers workflow recommendations, not a controlled comparison proving that one specification format improves coding-agent outcomes by a particular percentage. Treat the brief as a way to make intent inspectable and decisions explicit—not as a guarantee of correct code.
