To write a meta description with Yoast SEO, open the Yoast SEO panel on the post or page, select Search appearance, and enter a short, accurate summary in the meta description field. Put the page’s main value near the beginning, make the wording specific to that page, and use Yoast’s preview and length feedback as editing aids—not as a guarantee of what Google will show.

What a meta description does—and what it does not do

A meta description is a short HTML description of a page. Search engines may show it beneath the result title, giving a searcher context about what is on the page and whether it is worth opening. Its job is to set an accurate expectation: describe the page’s useful answer, offer, or information clearly enough that the right reader can recognize it.

It is not a substitute for the page’s title or content, and it is not a promise that Google will display those exact words. Google can choose a passage from the page that better fits an individual search query. Yoast’s current guidance also says that a meta description does not directly improve rankings; write it to communicate relevance and help an informed reader decide whether to click, not to promise a ranking or click-through-rate gain. Yoast’s meta description guide, updated June 23, 2025, explains its practical writing advice.

How to write a useful description

Draft the description after you know what the page actually delivers. A useful description is unique, concise, clear, and specific. Avoid turning it into a pile of keywords or a vague promise that could apply to any page on the site.

  1. Identify the searcher and intent. Decide who the page is for and what they are trying to learn, compare, or do. A tutorial should communicate its practical answer; a product page should name a meaningful, page-specific benefit.
  2. Choose the page’s central value. Ask what a reader will find after clicking. Use that answer as the core of one direct sentence rather than trying to summarize every section.
  3. Lead with the useful information. Search snippets may be shortened or rewritten. Put the subject and the most important value early so the opening remains informative if the end is not shown.
  4. Use active, natural wording. Address what the page provides in plain language. A call to action can fit when it sounds natural, but it should not replace a concrete explanation of the content.
  5. Add the focus keyphrase only when it fits. Use it if it describes the page naturally and accurately. Read the sentence aloud; if the phrase makes it awkward or misleading, leave it out.
  6. Make this description distinct. Write a separate summary for each public page. Reusing boilerplate makes different pages sound interchangeable and does not tell a searcher which one is relevant.

For example, a page that teaches readers to configure a setting should describe that task and the result they can expect, rather than merely saying “Learn more about our helpful guide.” A product page should distinguish the product in terms the page actually supports, not rely on unsupported superlatives. The description must match the visible content: if the page does not deliver the promised answer or benefit, revise the page or the summary.

How long should a Yoast meta description be?

Yoast’s June 23, 2025 guidance recommends roughly 155 characters as a practical drafting target and reports that many observed snippets fall around 120–156 characters. These are Yoast’s editorial guidance and observations, not a fixed Google limit, formal independent study, or guarantee that a search result will display that many characters. There is no single ideal length that works for every page and query.

Write the clearest concise version first. Then use Yoast’s length feedback to spot copy that may be unnecessarily long or short. Do not damage a useful sentence merely to hit a precise count: Google may truncate the text, show a different passage, or render a snippet of a different length. Yoast’s historical discussion of snippet length quotes Google’s Danny Sullivan saying snippets are generated from page content and may vary in length; treat that as a quotation reported in that article, not as a fresh guarantee or a current character-count rule. Read Yoast’s discussion of Google snippets and description length.

Where to enter the description in Yoast SEO

For a post or page

  1. Open the post or page in the WordPress editor.
  2. Open its Yoast SEO panel. The panel’s placement can vary with the WordPress editing interface and product version.
  3. Choose Search appearance.
  4. Enter or revise the text in the Meta description field.
  5. Review the search preview and length feedback, then update or publish the page.

The preview helps you assess the text as you edit; it does not control or guarantee Google’s eventual result. If the controls are not where you expect, look for the Yoast SEO panel associated with the current post or page rather than assuming every WordPress installation has an identical layout. Yoast documents Content Preview for Yoast SEO, Yoast SEO Premium, Yoast SEO for Shopify, Yoast WooCommerce SEO, and Yoast SEO AI+. Its feature page lists AI Generate suggestions as a Premium feature; AI is optional, and you can write the description yourself. Product packaging may change, so check the current edition details before relying on a specific feature. Yoast Content Preview and meta description tool.

For the homepage

The route depends on how WordPress is configured to display the homepage:

Homepage setup Where to edit Useful detail
Latest posts Yoast SEO settings > Content types > Homepage Yoast notes that feedback for this homepage field differs from the ordinary post/page meta box.
Static page Edit the selected homepage page, then use its Yoast SEO Search appearance settings The description belongs to that page’s settings.

If you want the ordinary post/page length feedback while drafting a latest-post homepage description, Yoast advises drafting in a post first and then transferring the finished copy to the homepage field. Check Yoast’s homepage title and meta description instructions if the settings labels differ in your installation.

What if the description field is blank?

A blank field does not necessarily mean Yoast will create an automatic summary. In its developer specification, Yoast says a configured replacement-variable pattern is used when one is set, while a page-specific value takes precedence over that pattern. The stated default is to output no meta description rather than generate one automatically. Yoast describes the intended standard this way: “Every public page on a website should contain a unique, useful editorial summary of the content/purpose of that page, output in a meta description tag.” See the Yoast Developer Portal functional specification.

If the field is blank, check whether a site or content-type template is configured. If a particular page needs a deliberate summary, enter a page-specific description; Yoast’s specification says that value takes precedence over the pattern. Do not assume that a blank editor field means there is a useful description on the rendered page—verify the output when that distinction matters.

Why Google may show different text

Even when Yoast outputs the intended description, Google may use another passage from the page if it better matches the query. A page may therefore appear with different snippet text for different searches. Treat the description as your suggested summary, and make the page itself contain a strong, relevant explanation that can serve a searcher who sees a different excerpt. Yoast explains this behavior in its support article, “Google shows the wrong meta description for my site.”

If the preferred text is missing consistently, inspect the page’s rendered HTML or use an SEO diagnostic to check the following:

  • There is a description tag. Confirm the page outputs a meta description element and that its content is the text you intended.
  • There is exactly one description tag. Yoast support recommends checking that the HTML does not contain duplicate description tags.
  • The tag is valid. A missing or malformed tag may stop the preferred value from being used.
  • Snippet display is not restricted. A nosnippet directive or max-snippet: 0 prevents a text snippet from being shown.
  • The page content supports the summary. If the page’s copy does not clearly support the description, Google may select a different passage for the query.

Fix the cause you find, then allow for the fact that a valid description is still not a command to Google. Avoid repeatedly rewriting a sound description solely because one search result displayed a different excerpt.

Check the rendered page visually when that is part of your workflow

Yoast’s preview is for editing search-result copy. If your publishing process also calls for checking the rendered page itself—for example, to see whether a cookie banner, newsletter popup, or chat widget obscures a visual review—you can use a screenshot API such as ScreenshotNeo. It captures web pages; it does not write, validate, or submit a Yoast meta description, and it is not a replacement for inspecting the page’s HTML or search-result behavior.

One GET request can return a webpage screenshot. Replace the example target URL with the page you want to capture and use your ScreenshotNeo API key. The API accepts PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF output; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.

cURL

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com/page -o shot.webp

Python

  • Cookie banners are accepted and removed before capture, and known newsletter popups and chat widgets can be removed; each cleanup step can be turned off.
  • Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing; response headers identify the page verdict and billing status.
  • An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
  • The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. All features are on every plan.

Frequently asked questions

Does a meta description appear in the visible text of my page?

No. It is an HTML page description that may be used beneath a search result title; it is not a paragraph that visitors automatically see in the page body.

Can I use Yoast’s writing suggestions instead of writing a description myself?

Yes, where the feature is available, but it is optional. Review any suggestion for accuracy and page-specific detail before using it; a generated sentence should not promise content the page does not provide.
