A reliable browser automation script follows four steps: navigate to a known starting point, locate a control, perform an action, and verify the result. Choose a framework based on the browsers, language, test or task workflow, and execution environment you need—not on an unsupported claim that one tool is universally best.
Plan the task before writing code
Write down both the action and the evidence that proves it worked. For a form submission, for example, success should mean that a confirmation appears or the expected state changes—not simply that the script issued a click.
- Define the starting URL and required page state.
- Identify the control using a stable, meaningful locator.
- Perform the action with the framework’s browser API.
- Assert the expected outcome.
This pattern applies to a one-off administrative task as well as a repeatable test. The environment differs: tests are easier to reproduce when they use controlled data and independent state.
Choose a browser automation framework
Compare the browsers and operating systems you must support, your team’s language and API preferences, whether you need a test runner, how you will debug failures, and whether execution must be distributed across machines. Official documentation describes capabilities, but does not establish a universal speed or reliability winner.

| Framework | Useful fit | Documented capabilities |
|---|---|---|
| Playwright | Browser tests and scripts that benefit from locator guidance, assertions, and debugging tools. | Documents testing across browser engines, projects for browser and device coverage, actionability waits, retrying assertions, code generation, and trace viewing. Playwright documentation. |
| Selenium | Projects that use WebDriver or need distributed execution across machines. | The Selenium Project describes WebDriver as an interface for browser instruction sets; Selenium Manager handles browser and driver management by default in bindings, and Grid supports parallel runs across machines. Selenium documentation. |
| Puppeteer | JavaScript projects that want to launch or connect to a browser and control pages through its API. | Its guides cover browser launch or connection, page creation, locator-based actions, and readiness checks. Puppeteer getting started. |
For the example below, Playwright provides a compact test structure with navigation, a semantic locator, and an assertion. Install and configure it according to the official Playwright getting-started guide.
Write a script with a meaningful assertion
This illustrative Playwright test opens the Playwright site, follows its “Get started” link, and checks that the destination heading is visible. It uses the documented Playwright test API patterns; adapt the URL, locator, and success condition to your own task.

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('opens the getting started guide', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://playwright.dev/');
await page.getByRole('link', { name: 'Get started' }).click();
await expect(page.getByRole('heading', { name: 'Installation' })).toBeVisible();
});
The test is useful because each line expresses intent: open a known page, find a link by its role and accessible name, click it, then verify a visible heading. A successful click alone would not prove that navigation reached the intended destination.
Find controls with stable locators
Prefer selectors that reflect what a person using the interface can identify. A button’s role and accessible name, or a form control’s associated label, usually says more about intent than a generated class name or a long path through nested elements.

- Use a role and accessible name for buttons, links, and headings when available.
- Use the associated label for form inputs.
- If several controls match, narrow the search to a meaningful container such as a dialog or list item.
- Use an explicit test contract where the project provides one, rather than depending on incidental layout or styling details.
Playwright’s locator guidance describes locating elements through user-facing attributes and supports actions that resolve the locator when the action runs. Puppeteer likewise recommends locator-based interaction with readiness checks. These features help with common timing issues, but they cannot make an ambiguous locator correct.
Code generation can help discover candidate locators. Review generated code before relying on it: check that the locator is unique and meaningful, and add an assertion tied to the task’s actual goal.

Let the framework wait for conditions
Pages render asynchronously, so a control may not be ready immediately after navigation. Playwright documents actionability checks before actions and retrying web-first assertions; Puppeteer documents checks before locator actions. Use these condition-based mechanisms instead of inserting an arbitrary fixed pause whenever possible.
For example, a visibility assertion expresses the desired state and can wait for that state according to the framework’s behavior. A fixed delay merely waits for a duration: it can waste time when the page is ready early and still fail when the page takes longer. Automatic waits reduce common timing races, but do not fix a wrong locator, an unexpected page state, or an unreliable external dependency.

Keep runs reproducible and debug failures
Control state and test data
Independent state, predictable test data, and a controlled starting point make failures easier to reproduce. For database-backed tests, use a controlled staging environment where practical. A stable test fixture is not the same as a real production account, and it does not grant permission to automate a site.
Inspect what happened
When a run fails, establish which step failed and what the page showed at that point. Playwright’s reports and trace viewer can help inspect actions and page state. Keep assertions focused on behavior your team controls; a third-party page can change independently of your code.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The locator matches nothing. | The page is not at the expected state, or the accessible name or label differs from what the script expects. | Inspect the current page and locator details; confirm the starting URL and use the actual user-facing name. If needed, narrow or correct the locator. |
| The locator matches more than one control. | The page contains duplicate names, such as repeated buttons in separate cards or dialogs. | Scope the locator to the meaningful container that identifies the intended control. |
| An action fails because the control is not ready. | The control may be hidden, disabled, moving, or not yet available. | Check the page state and use the framework’s locator action and condition-based waits. Do not assume an arbitrary pause will resolve the underlying issue. |
| The click succeeds but the test still fails. | The action ran, but the expected navigation or state change did not happen—or the assertion does not describe the real success condition. | Assert a visible confirmation, expected heading, title, or other outcome that proves the task completed; inspect the run to see where behavior diverged. |
| A test passes locally but fails against an external service. | The service or its data can change outside your control. | Prefer a controlled test environment and isolated data for repeatable tests, and avoid treating a third-party page as a stable fixture. |
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is to save a page as an image or PDF rather than interact with its controls, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. For example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot of Stripe:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for setup and request options. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server includes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots, and every feature is available on every plan.
