What a clear pull request description should explain
GitHub’s guidance is to help reviewers understand the problem, the approach, and the result. A description should add context to the diff—not narrate every changed line. Pull requests also provide a place to discuss proposed changes before they are merged and preserve a reviewable history, as explained in GitHub’s About pull requests documentation.
- Why: Name the bug, user need, or project goal that prompted the work. Link the issue or discussion so reviewers can find the wider context.
- What changed: Describe the behavior or implementation change at a level that helps reviewers orient themselves.
- Expected result and impact: Explain what should happen after the change, including compatibility effects or risks when relevant.
- Review focus: Point to important files, a useful review order, trade-offs, or a decision where you want feedback.
- Validation: Say which checks you ran and their results, and identify anything not run or still needed.
For example, “Improves authentication” is hard to verify. “Rejects expired tokens with a 401 response” gives the reviewer a specific behavior to check against the diff. That wording is an example, not a claim about any particular tested change.
A practical pull request description template
This adaptable template is a starting point, not a required GitHub format. Remove sections that do not help explain your particular change, and follow any template or contribution rules in the repository.

## Why
What problem, user need, bug, or project goal prompted this change?
Link the issue or discussion.
## What changed
Summarize the behavior or implementation change.
Mention important files or design choices if they help review.
## Result / impact
What should now happen?
Note compatibility effects, risks, or visible behavior changes.
## How to review
Point to files or a review order if useful.
What feedback or decision do you want?
## Validation
- Checks or tests run: [name and result]
- Not run / remaining validation: [what and why]
Keep validation precise. Write “Ran pytest tests/api; 42 passed” only if you actually ran that command and got that result. If you did not run tests, say so plainly and explain why; do not imply that planned checks have passed.
Help reviewers spend attention in the right places
Reviewers already have the diff, so use the description to direct attention rather than duplicate it. GitHub recommends focused pull requests, drawing attention to files or areas that need closer examination, and reviewing your own changes before asking others to review them. If a change is broad, consider splitting it into smaller proposals when practical; if it cannot be split, explain the important files or review order and keep exceptions and dependencies visible.

- Call out a design trade-off and ask a specific question if you need a decision.
- Use a before-and-after example or screenshot when a visible change is easier to understand that way.
- Flag security-sensitive changes for focused attention, especially those involving dependencies, authentication, permissions, workflows, or sensitive data.
- Check the diff for accidental changes and missing context before requesting review.
GitHub’s engineering blog, How to write the perfect pull request, also emphasizes explaining why code should change and why particular teams are being involved. A review request is more useful when it makes the decision or expertise needed explicit.
Use a repository template when it improves consistency
A lightweight free-form description can work well for a small or familiar change. A team template can make issue links, change summaries, and validation status predictable when contributors often omit the same context. The right choice depends on the complexity of changes and whether each field provides value across the repository’s work; a template that forces irrelevant sections can make descriptions less clear.

GitHub lets repository owners add a pull request template that appears in the description when a pull request is opened. Its documentation, Creating a pull request template for your repository, describes placement at the repository root, in docs/, or in .github/, and support for multiple templates in supported locations. A useful template can prompt for a related issue, proposed changes, and the reviewer or team to involve without making every prompt mandatory for every change.
Check the description before requesting review
- Confirm the context: Is the reason for the change clear, and does the issue or discussion link lead to the relevant background?
- Check the outcome: Can a reviewer tell what behavior should change and compare that expectation with the diff?
- Make the review path useful: Have you identified important files, risks, or an approach decision that needs feedback?
- Verify the validation statement: Does it distinguish checks completed from checks not run or still required?
- Self-review the diff: Remove accidental changes and add any missing explanation before asking for feedback.
- Check repository conventions: Use the project’s template and readiness labels or other contribution requirements where applicable.
If an AI-generated summary helped draft the description, compare it with the actual diff and add the context only you know. GitHub advises authors to review generated summaries carefully rather than treating them as authoritative.

Does every pull request need the same sections?
No universal format is established by the guidance cited here. A few concise paragraphs may be enough for a small, self-explanatory change. Headings or a team template become more useful when reviewers need consistent issue links, testing details, or guidance on where to focus. In either case, keep the description specific to the change and omit sections that add no useful context.
